yeah, best buy trade in is really only a decent deal if you have fairly old hardware. Anything from the last 3 years you will get way more money selling it privately...

I think its safe to say BestBuy wins the dumbest Retailer Award. This is an oversite by BestBuy as they have nothing to gain by over paying for old Apple hardware to sell your new Apple Hardware (low profit margin). The issue is it is not fixed and to people with Newer Hardware (customers you want happy) they look like scum. This is why they keep bleeding money every quarter.

My 15" MBP with 1.86Ghz Duo Core, 1GB Ram, 128GB HD in good condition quoted $375.

Wow.

I was cleaning my MBP off this morning to trade it in today and I had the specs wrong. I have a 15" MBP, 2.16GHz C2D, 1GB Ram, 128GB HD in Good condition.

$512. Booyah. Hope the store takes the trade in for me today. Might have to get myself a new iPad 3 when it comes out :)

I was quoted $670 for a 2008 White MacBook with a 640gb hdd and 4gb of ram... I was going to jump, but I'll wait for the new Airs.

The sweet-spot is a pre-unibody MacBook with a C2D processor. In good condition, you can easily gain about $200-$300 on buying and old one and trading it in. The larger the HDD the better too. Last week I bought a MacBook on ebay for $320 and then traded it in for a $567 GC. Now, I just have to decide what to trade it in for or towards.

One question...if I buy, say, a MacBook Pro from Best Buy brand new and don't open it, will Apple let me return it to an Apple Store for store credit? Apple Stores of course offer some of the other configurable options that the Best Buy stores do not.

I wound up applying my trade-in towards a 2011 11" MacBook Air 4/128. It was an open box so $999 pre-tax. Saved me about $400 compared to paying cash for new one from them.

Best Buy could give a damn about their profit margin on Apple hardware. They want people to buy new gear so they can up-sell Black Tie and get you in on a credit card. That is where they make their money.

At this point Best Buy is not much more than a credit card company with a small electronics division.
