I have X-plane 9 and also MS Flight Simulator X. Both are good, But I like mos X-Playes because it's easy for me, no need to connect with window

is X-plane categorized as a game or a flight simulator? i havent purchses the full version yet but from what i see so far it is not action oriented with missions and such. can you fire at something>

It's a flight simulator. No shooting down other planes...all you do is fly.
I'm not sure if there are combat flt sims for Macs any longer.
But you can always add Windows via Bootcamp and use a Windows based combat flt sim.

It all comes down to what you want. Realism ( which to a lot of people can be boring...daily piloting is a very routine job until things go wrong ) or a game.

X-Plane is in my humble opinion, the best at realism...It's accurate, looks fantastic, and the more scenery packs you get, the better the experience is...However...It's not a cheap hobby.

I guess my current setup which is modest compared to many peoples has cost me around £500 or $850. FSX for Windows comes with a large selection of aircraft, and has a more "gamey" feel to it, although it too can be made fairly realistic.

I don't regard my time spent using X-Plane as gaming...Calculate fuel loads according to weight, allow for weather in route planning, and allow failures to show up in a random or pre-programmed fashion. Then fly.

I think there is a version of FSX which is combat based, but I'm not certain. If you want to get serious about it, then an investment is required.

A point of interest, X-Plane I believe is the only home simulator that calculates lift and drag based on the shape of the airplane. Most "games" use tables that determine what the performance of an aircraft will be in any given circumstance. IMO, this is a plus for X-Plane realism.

Yes. They are also very strict about the aircraft models they allow through for sale....That's really why they concentrate on the physics of the actual sim itself. You can challenge yourself in as real a world environment as you can get.

Agreed. Though they still need to work on a few things. They still need to get the hydroplaning physics right. I find it reduces braking capability a bit too much( so much that I run off the runway at KDCA with a 727 in the rain).

Also the ability to land a 737 on an aircraft carrier. :p Though they may have fixed that since I haven't been able to do that since X-Plane 8 I believe it was( or was it 9? I can't remember. X-Plane 9 was out for so long can't remember when I did that :p).

Back when it was created, it was more "aerospace engineering test program" than "flight simulator" - with a price to match. I've been using it since version 1 or 2 when I was in college. (I also used every single version of Microsoft Flight Simulator...)
 
When X-Plane was in the 1.0 stage it was crazy expensive.. like mentioned, it certainly did have more of an "it's for engineering" feel to it, but it's more of a simulator true to the definition, where as MS Flight Simulator should have probably been called Flight Emulator. ;-)

As for aforementioned iTunes store link, what the heck is that? Looks like a gag to me.
 
I played one of the Falcon games and it was the most impressive combat sim I've ever flown. It had a 2" thick manual and an extensive tutorial. In the end, it was too much work, but I can't fault it for it's realism. :p
It is certainly a handful. It took me about a year to understand enough about what I'm doing to be effective. It is a completely different type of game(sim). I believe its complexity keeps the short attention span types from joining in and mucking up the 'fun'. I completely get that 'fun' is VERY relative. I can appreciate most don't enjoy taking 20 minutes just to click all the dials and switches to get the jet cranked up, then wait 5 minutes for ATC, take off and join up with 4 other human beings to then fly over boring water during the night only to arrive at your target 2 hours later. Complete your attack and return to a safe lane, refuel and return home to a rising sun. I enjoy it because none of it is scripted. There are impossible missions or circumstances that you have to make the right decisions on and return to base with your weapons still on board and wingy still alive. Sometimes the intel is not very intelligent and the target isn't exactly where you think it is, sometimes the skies are cloudy and you can't get a clean laser target, there are so many variables that it really never gets boring.
 
I can still do it! Land a 737 onto the Nimitz in X-Plane 10.25.

Warbirds has a free offline MacOSX download if you enjoy those birds from WWII and is worth a look.
 
This post concerns flight sticks. I thought this would be a good thread to ask. If you've noticed Ive been talking up Elite Dangeroue in another thread. Working on getting a working flight stick for it. I've got several all ready, but I've not used them for years.

I've got an older Saitek Cyborg 3D USB stick. I was psyched to use this stick cause of its twist 3D action, but there does not seem to be software for it that runs on Windows 7. Anyone know?

I've also got CH Combat Stick and Throttle which I believe has windows 7 software.

Finally I have a Saitek x36- windows 7 software?

Yeah I'm lazy, I did download some of the last Saitek software that might work with my Cyborg, but it did not recognize the hardware. :(

Xplane 9 on integrated graphics

A Macbook has integrated graphics, so I do not know how well it will run X-Plane. One thing I know for sure, from the X-Plane web site, that the program will not run on Intel integrated graphics.
Anyone have comments?

X-Plane 9 run fine on my mid 2012 macbook air and my 2011 mac mini, both with Intel graphics. X-Plane 10 gave me troubles. Free demo's are great for testing hardware compatibility.

FSX is dead. It has some great graphics, procedures, and add-ons, but it's a dated, single-thread architecture of a program and X-Plane has eaten its lunch.

Have you tried these drivers? Allegedly, they support up to Windows 8.

Old thread but I used up an old pair of Saitek X45, then picked up the best thing ever: Thrustmaster Cougar ( http://www.amazon.com/Thrustmaster-Hotas-Cougar-Flight-Stick/dp/B000062SSB) and some pedals. THEN, I went completely crazy and modded the Cougar with FSSB from realsimulator ( http://www.realsimulator.com/html/fssb.html ).

I cannot understand how anyone can run X-Plane 10 on a laptop. I just built a computer with the latest Core i5 with Intel HD 4600 and 16 GB RAM. This computer did OK on moderate settings in X-Plane 10, but not to my satisfaction. Today I installed a graphics card, and the improvement is very evident. I can up the settings a lot. This is running Mavericks.

My other build is the latest Core i7 with a GTX 970, 16 GB RAM, and it will give high frame rates with all settings at Extreme. Currently it is running Windows 8.1, but when Yosemite reaches the final version, I will install it.
