It's been a long time since I've looked at X-Plane, but when I last looked, it was the best non-combat, no missions, no combat damage modeling flight sim.

probably not the best choice but a very interesting one nonetheless

Google Earth actually has a built in flight simulator. i think that its very interesting to see google doing something like this. they even allow joystick control.

like i said, probably not the best choice, but a very interesting one indeed.
lol good times.
Completely forgot about that feature since its Apple Maps everywhere now.

Ah the good ol' days

I am an airline pilot, and my best experience so far is with X-plane. It's not perfect, but definitely good enough to be my personal flight sim (for teaching, playing, practicing, etc.)

Interesting read as I want a flight game too. My problem is that I care not for realism as long as I can dog fight and free fly causing mayhem in anything from a Fokker DR1 to a Mig29...... any ideas on that kind of game for MAC OS X 10.5 on intel?

I love to play War Thunder. It is a very realistic WW-2 style dogfighting game, and its free. You can play as tanks too, which while planes are dogfighting, planes can swoop down and destroy tanks, AAA's, AA's, Artilleries, and many more things. Naval Battle should be coming in January of 2017. If you want the realism of a cockpit, just hit 'v' and you will see it through your cockpit. But, continue hitting v if you want a gunners view or something that makes dogfighting easier. Good luck, I hope you enjoy!

You can also get it on Steam.

IF you don't want anything realistic, try Chuck Yeager's Advanced Flight Trainer. It is a free to play fun game where you fly fighter jets as well as interact with Chuck Yeager (The first pilot to break the sound barrier)! http://www.myabandonware.com/game/chuck-yeagers-advanced-flight-simulator-1t2

Happy flying,

Pretty sure I've chimed into this thread before, but it deserves repeating a couple of times:

Falcon BMS 4.33 ( best combat flight sim ever created )

Ooooh Ahhhh!!!

X-Plane 11 is out and an AWESOME improvement. But something still keeps pulling me back to Flight Simulator X (Steam Edition). Patiently awaiting Dovetail Games "Flight Simulator" that is based on FSX.

Well, the beta is out. Fun to look around.
It's running okay, but not great IMHO.

It's a far less "major upgrade" than X-Plane 9 to X-Plane 10 was.

The new default 737 looks superb. Still, ever since the (long awaited!!) v5 release of the x737 with lovely 3D cockpit, it isn't missed ATM.

I'm afraid X-Plane 11 will be an even greater burden on the hardware on PC or Mac than X-Plane 10 already is.
Even now my 4 GB VRAM is easily exceeded with some huge 3rd party sceneries (like the pay ware New York city, orthophotos, with the 3 major airports loaded).... and that is not with all settings maxed out (not even close...).

I think that's good actually. As long as X-palne do actually able to fully utilise the hardware but not waste it.

The hardware improve a lot every few months. It's so easy to get a 8GB VRAM GPU now. The 16GB and 24GB one are coming in 2017.

If X-plane 11 limit itself's max setting only able to utilise 4GB VRAM. Then it will be a big waste for the real top of the line computer.

I think it's better they now provide something that can utilise the future hardware once they avail, rather then only stick to the current hardware and then we have to wait for X-plan 12 to get better experience when the better hardware release.

IMO, as long as a mid range computer can run X-plane smoothly with reasonable resolution (e.g. 1080P) and medium setting. And of course, the picture actually looks good, then X-plane 11 is already doing a reasonably good job. If you want to play it at max setting, you should do that on a top of the line gaming computer, but not a mid range computer.

What Joysticks work with X-Plane 11? I've had a Saitek Cyborg 3D since the 90's and nothing seems to work with it. Too bad, it's a nice stick. Any ideas?

I have one of those; there hasn't been a working driver for it since OS X 10.10.5. I've used the Thrustmaster T-Flight Hotas X with later versions of macOS, and it's worked well.

As I recall, X-Plane offers the ability to remap controls by simply pressing the joystick input you want in the control section of the game. But doesn’t there have to be something in the MacOS that allows the game and joystick to communicate with each other or is that strictly between the game and the stick?

Yes, there needs to be an OS level driver. The Saitek used to just use Apple's built in support which worked fine but starting with 10.11, that stopped working so X-plane can't be used with that hardware.

So which brand joysticks still work on Mac, I wonder?

I use a older Logitech force 2 with flightgear. I could never get it to work with X-plane back in the x plane 9 days. But after discovering Flightgear it working out fine for my occasional needs.

I bought the Thrustmaster T-Flight Hotas X since it was an older version at lower cost. I saw someone say good things about it in another thread. It works great on my 2017 MBP!

I would like something similar to what MacsRgr8 posted above but wanted to ensure everything would work well on my laptop. And it does. Later on, I may upgrade.

My old Logitech force 2 quit working, and I just started using X-plane 10 on a 2015 imac 5K with high sierra.
Will the $20 Thrustmaster USB flight stick work with osx?
