What's your preferred form factor - design and usability?

Based on my opinion. After all, I the question OP asked was a question asking each of us. I wonder what has you all insecure.
just trying to understand how you can have an 'opinion' without having even tried the M2 air. it's like hating a movie you've never seen, or disliking a food you haven't tried. but yes, you are of course entitiled to your 'opinion'...

For design, I totally agree with you the M1 is better - that's my opinion. I *personally* find the wedge shape much better for typing than the MBP (which I have used), and yes I have very large hands. I also much prefer the screen, because I hate the notch. But internally, for me 16gb of RAM isn't enough on a daily basis, and for that alone I'd probably upgrade if I could afford to.

Hey gang, I can't help but feel the m1 air is still the superior form factor.

1. M1 air 'looks thinner' even though it's not.
2. M1 air feels thinner even though it's not. I.e. Does not hurt wrists for big hands due to super thin wedge (I assume M2 will hurt, it's height next to the 13" MBP looks almost the same for hands and lots of people get wrist pain....see my other thread...)
3. Clean, no notch, if you have your menu bar hid on the M1 air, it's almost the same screen space!
4. Timeless design - it will always be recognized as the real MacBook Air - the jobs era design.

I know the m2 wins on non-form factor considerations (screen brightness, CPU/GPU, etc.) ... but this thread is about form factor...

What do ya'll think?

I have the budget to upgrade my m1 air to the m2, but I feel like I'm loosing too much with the upgrade.

the m1 air is legendary.
Got to agree with everything you say man, that wedge was an iconic design for the MacBook Air, and Apple just threw it away, sad
This MacBook Air, suits the name MacBook (Ya, Just MacBook the original, Apple literally removed the title of Mac Laptops :()
I have a MBA 2020, and it feels absolutely good, as the wedge design firstly as you said looks good and thinner, secondly the hands are less elevated, so reducing that pain, and third doesn't look like a chunky brick like the new M1 Pro/Max MacBook Pros, and also I doubt if it's really worth the upgrade now, atleast run it for a year or two more, it still beats tons of pricier Windows Laptops easily, so don't think much on it

The MBA is not powerful enough for me - and I don't really need my computer to be a laptop to be honest - but if I were on the market for one, I would buy the new MBA any day of the year for sure.

as the poll shows, it's all subjective.

i have never been interested in the air, and never liked the wedge shape. so this is the first air i am excited about... and getting. and i am comfortable typing on my macbook, my previous macbook pros, my apple keyboard, my (flat) satechi keyboard.

you see the M2 as a 'chunky brick', i prefer the aesthetic without the wedge.

no matter what, apple controls these things. perhaps, someday, the wedge will return. but this is what the present looks like.

I really like the wedge better for how it looks, feels in the hand, and how it matches the "Air" name. The Air was always a unique design in the lineup and now it's just a thinner Pro.

The Air is due for a refresh. As much as I like the wedge form factor, I am not sure how Apple could have kept the wedge and refreshed it other than making it thinner. I do like the M2's flat top and move away from the beveled design. But I do not see how a flat and straight edge aesthetic would work with a wedge, unless it was shaped like the Apple wireless keyboard or trackpad.

so you've held the new air? and that's how you know the wedge feels better? and perhaps it's not a thinner pro at all... but simply a 'wedge-less air'.

No I have not held it bc it's not out yet and I am not a YouTube or media reviewer. Obviously. I am basing it off of how it looks in photos, the Apple event hands-on videos. I do not need to hold the M2 to have an idea of how the slab will be vs the wedge; it will be thicker at the end closest to me when I use it.

I saw your posting history and you just like to complain about people's opinions and thoughts, so I shouldn't have even bothered responding to you.

This is something that's hard to tell in pictures. The wedge and the rounded sides hides some thickness, which probably means the new Air are really thin... because they look pretty thin already but don't have any way to hide it.

I'm a big fan of the wedge though, so I'd always go with that over a little increased thickness on one side. The wedge fits in a bag better, and you can store a few more things in the space created. The thin edge is easier to carry too. It's a big difference between the 13" Pro and the Air.

The new Air might be thin enough so that this doesn't really matter, but I'd have to see it in person to tell.

I don't need to try it out. I hate the new design through and through. I think it's an abomination to the MBA line. For me, the true MBA is the wedged shaped. You don't need to put opinion in quotes, just means your sarcasm is thinly veiled.

you can hate the design all you want, that won't change anything. and i get it, that some people are resistant to change.

apple designed the air, can make it look different, and still call it an air. your version of 'true' is, again... just an opinion.

I don't resist change, but I do fail to see how it's an Air given they took away what made the Air name in the first place. I could care less of the design change in the MBPs, but the MBA looks abysmal for the name Air.

Everyone's truth is an opinion.

Considering it's thinner and lighter (barely but technically) than the M1 Air, how are they taking away what made it an Air in the first place?

seems quite Airy to me

Not to dwell too much on the distant past, but I've never been able to fully shake the notion that the wedge is emblematic of the first MBA, a marvel of engineering that, nevertheless, was so full of compromises - high price, lack of power, lack of ports and optical drive at a time that both were still pretty essential - that I didn't even seriously consider it when I bought my MBP in 2009. Obviously Apple has made great strides with the MBA since then, but the wedge design has always reminded me of that first version, which was not much more than a novelty to me.

The M2 Air is the first one they've ever made that I have actually wanted to buy. So, yesterday, I was only too glad to purchase one, just after 8 AM EDT.

To me it's just the form factor. Several things can be done to better it; however, they switched it to that ugly box thing. A reminder of a design phase of pre-2008 Macs.

Incidentally, one of the key principles of keyboard ergonomics is that you want to at least have a flat keyboard, or, preferably, a negative tilt (front edge higher than rear). A keyboard that slopes towards you, with positive tilt, like the wedge design of the MBA, increases wrist strain. Granted, the M1 Air's positive tilt is pretty shallow and probably doesn't contribute much to wrist strain, but it's certainly not a ergonomic advantage, either.

The wedge is a much better design ergonomically. Even if the wrist deck of the new Air may sit at about the same height as the wedged Air, the sloping surface it creates is still better to be typed on. Not to mention it's much easier to grab one-handedly from the desk. With my 14 MBP I found it very hard to that, unless grabbing the air vents on the hinge side.

The wedge is a classic ergonomic design that works perfect for the Air.

I don't know why they made it so flat as the new M2 looks more dated and "boxy" if you ask me.

I feel as though the more boxy design language of the new MBP translated to the new Air won't look like a box in person. Due to the thinness of this device I don't think anyone will look at this thing in person and say "man that looks boxy". I really don't think photos do this device justice, time will tell soon enough.

Science says otherwise. A flat or negative tilt (sloping from front to back) is preferred ergonomically.

my posting history? then you saw a lot of likes (a lot), my discussing issues, offering help when i have ideas... and questioning people who see disaster everywhere or believe their viewpoint is the only one that matters (and yes, i can be guilty of that sometimes). i admit that, but also... stand by everything i say. am sure, to be fair, you do too. 👍

I agree. whats old is new gain? Fashion and music trends repeat so I guess it’s not surprising for Apple.
I like the slab flat edges for thinner devices like the iPad and iPhone over the convex-like design.

The Air name has something whimsical about it but the M2 is not in my opinion. I thought it was quite jarring to have the feather in the promo video with it. Maybe bc they need a whimsical example to get the idea across and the computer by itself didn’t quite do the trick.

Apple knows what they are doing for the most part but this seems odd and reminds me of when they introduced the 12 MB which was much thinner and whimsical that the Air of the time.
