What's your preferred form factor - design and usability?

They will bring it back again. At that point we will have wedge + MagSafe just like 2017. Maybe they’ll even get rid of the notch by then.
or they won't. and they'll have completely-wireless charging, and no need for magsafe.

lots of possibilities, and we won't know until we get there. (altho i also believe the notch will vanish at some point in the near future). it's all theory!

The chassis is thicker at the front edge on the M2 Air. The actual height is almost the same as the M1 design.

The opened height of the keyboard/trackpad surface is the same on the M1 and M2 MBA?
Where do you see that measurement?

Good to know (and overall good -- if true)

hmmm. some people here seem to prefer it (60% of an admittedly-small group). seems more of a balance to me now (but then, i never liked the airs until this one).
That's because under function, the customer dictated. Under the balance, Apple gave us what we wanted and what we didn't know we wanted.

It's sad to know Apple's board is now full of finance and Wall Street guys and barely (if any) technology guys.

I don’t think they are exactly the same - the M2 appears to be higher but I don’t think there’s much in it. I don’t have an M1 Air to hand but from what I can see going by images online that I roughly measured and scaled against each other I estimate that there’s only 1-2mm difference. If I could be bothered I could get the exact measurements but I’m busy and besides we‘ll know for certain soon enough anyway.

just saying something does not make it true... 🤔

What? The board being full of financial guys is true. Apple giving us what we didn't know we wanted was true. Form over function was true and now function over form is becoming the norm.
apple board

it's my personal opinion that function has become more important in the post-ive era, but it's truly a combination of the two (form and function) that matters now to apple. as far a apple 'giving us what we didn't know we want'... who's 'we'? that sentence is pure opinion...

Comparing my M2 midnight to my daughters SG M1 air it looks so out dated, much prefer this shape than the wedge, apple have nailed it, thin and feels lighter and smaller with bit bigger screen.

Have always had SG everything but this midnight is best colour yet hands down.

Can we beg side-by-side pictures please?

This tread has been debating table top - to - handrest difference since June ... it sounds like you can put our combined minds at ease 😆

anyone have real-world side by side view of the front edges (M1 vs M2) yet by chance?

Grabbed from a YouTube review. This was the best shot I could get.

Cannot remember which review it was btw. Apologies. I watched so many yesterday and grabbed this late last night. I should’ve made a note of it. Although I do remember this was the only shot that showed the two side by side and close-up so nothing else to glean on this issue from that particular review anyway.

Not sure how anyone can say that the M1 looks dated compared to the M2. The M1 is sleeker and more modern looking. The M2 looks boxy and retro, but retro is certainly "in" at the moment and therefore modern too.

Both look great, but neither makes the other look dated.

If midnight was genuinely matte black, I would be replacing my SG M1 Air.

But if there was an matte black M1, I'd pick that in a heartbeat.

I think that the M1 looks great and the M2 hasn’t changed that. I do think that the M2 looks sleek and modern too and is the better design, but that’s entirely subjective of course.

And it’s all about perception and cultural normalisation. People using the term ’dated‘ in the pejorative sense for something that was the latest model only a short time ago is not something that I give much weight to. It’s just one-dimensional shorthand for people who are either unable or unwilling to express their critique of something in any other way.

As for the colour I’m with you on the Midnight. I‘m not overly keen on the blue tone and if it were matte black I would very possibly be swayed from my current choice of Silver.

I’m hoping to see more reviews typing on the front edge while open, as I too have suffered from thicker MacBooks digging into my wrists over time. But from the looks of this pic, the leading edge is damn close in height while open on the new Air, which is encouraging.

I mean, it’s about a millimetre’s difference. It will undoubtedly be a different typing experience to the M1 Air due to the flat chassis vs the sloping M1 but personally it wouldn’t discourage me from buying the M2 if that were the only point of contention, as it seems like a minor issue to me when the M2 Air’s keyboard deck is only about 8-9mm high (although I can understand people being attached to the M1 Air chassis style or having had a bad experience with taller MacBooks and as such it may not be a minor issue to them.)

I'm more and more a fan of the old design, the more I've seen of the M2 Air. It's iconic, but also weird... that little bit of bucking convention that's fun about Macs sometimes. It's also been functional too, I always raise my keyboards, the wedge fits in a bag better for me, and holding it by the thin edge is a little easier. (or conversely holding it by the large edge makes the weight distribution better)

The new one is neat because the design isn't an illusion... the thinness is all there. But does everything have to be rectangles?

Yeah. I’m with you.
Bums me out. The wedge was a really great hallmark of the Air

Every time I pick up and move around the M1 MBA here in the house I smile a bit and enjoy the form and feel of it when folded.

I’m sure the M2 is a fine machine…but something a little special was lost here also.

"the wedge fits in a bag better for me"... because a wedge-less air would be harder to fit in a bag? 🤔

the wedge is iconic, and now it's gone. at some point, there will be another air refresh (probably a long way off), and ppl will complain it isn't the iconic shape of the M2. and round & round we go 🤪

Tim Cook, MBA but also an industrial engineer, BS
Alex Gorsky, MBA and salesman
Arthur D. Levinson, Biochemist Phd.
Monica Cecilia Lozano, Sociology and Political Science, BA
Andrea Jung, English, AB, marketing career
Albert Arnold Gore, Journalist, Politician, Government BA, invented the internet
Ronald D. Sugar, Electrical Engineer, Phd
Susan Lynne Wagner, MBA
James A. Bell, Accounting, BA

So 3 with a background in engineering/science. Three MBAs. One marketing, one political science, one accountant and one vice-president. Seems pretty balanced and is hardly overwhelmed with financial guys.

I don't have an M2 to compare, but the MacBook Pro 13" was noticeably worse. I carry my laptop in a messenger bag, with the laptop against my back any hard edges and thickness is noticeable. Also it just finds its way into the space easier, for the same reason an actual wedge works.

I don't really care about the iconic part, the simple idea would be to just make a rectangular box... but the wedge is a weird idea that has some benefits.

Alright gang,
Just did side by side testing of m1 air, m2 air, 13” mbp at the apple store…

I stand by that the m1 is the superior form factor (for me)

From a comfortable typing experience for large hands, the m2 seems to sit between the m1 air and 13” mbp, right in between from a comfort level.

Also the air m1 seems to be the slimmest of the bunch in person. If the screen has smaller bezels it would be the perfect computer.

I was prepared to buy it but was not sold and will keep the m1! (Side note, I own almost every apple product currently (extreme hobbyist), i love buying the latest and greatest, but it didn’t make the cut yet for me).

"I stand by that the m1 is the superior form factor for me" - fixed it for you 👍
