Well, I went to Target and picked up a Speck Satin, Speck Candyshell, Griffin Outfit Ice, Griffin Élan Form Graphite, Griffin Flex Grip, and an Incipio NGT to test them all out. I thought they all fit pretty snug and did not add too much bulk.

The Speck Satin was a translucent dark blue and was one of my favorites as it had a nice grip without being too sticky, a pretty good lip on the front, responsive buttons, and it felt like the case could absorb a moderate fall; I don't know if my 3rd party charger cord would fit or not, but it would surprise me if it did.

I also really liked the Speck Candyshell (black), but as soon as I took it out, I could already see some scratches (as well as fingerprints) on the glossy back; I know I could exchange it, but I don't want a case that is going to get easily scratched. Also, I'm not sure that it would accommodate a 3rd party USB cord, either. Otherwise, a nice case with good protection and not too bulky.

The Griffin Outfit Ice was another one of my favorites; the blue color was really deep and shiny and the grip/feel was my favorite by far. It was very slim, had a decent lip (although not great), and looked like it could accommodate a 3rd party USB cord. The only problem was that it was perhaps too thin and I didn't really feel like it would do much to absorb the impact of a moderate fall even as well as my bumper.

The Griffin Élan Form Graphite (in blue) had a nice fit but looked cheap. The buttons on the side were a little hard to reach through the cut out and I didn't like how most of the top was exposed; perhaps my least favorite of the bunch.

The Griffin FlexGrip was another that I didnt care for much. It didn't seem to have much of a lip and I didn't like the cut out for the side buttons; there are many better cases for the money.

Finally, there was the Incipio NGP; I was surprised to find a screen protector in the package, as this was the only case that I got which had one. The fit was good, although not quite as tight as the other cases; I would compare the fit to the Apple Bumper as there may be a spot or two where you can feel a tiny bit of space between the case and the phone. It had a nice grip without being too sticky, the buttons are probably the best of the lot, I can tell it will have no problem with a 3rd party USB cord, it's got a great lip, and it feels like it could withstand a moderate fall. Color selection wasn't much as all they had was one in gunmetal and a bunch in pink... naturally, I took the gunmetal.

After taking everything into consideration, I've decided to keep the Incipio NGP. It's slim, it seems relatively protective, its got a good grip, and when I looked at the receipt from Target (keep in mind that I wasn't really looking at any prices when I was in the store), it had rung up at $4.98! At that price, I'll probably go back tomorrow to get the pink one for my daughter's phone in case I ever decide to let her bulk down from her Otterbox Defender. If the Incipio NGP and the Speck Satin were similarly priced, I would have gotten the Speck due to it's slightly more snug fit - although, I would still want to make sure it could accommodate a 3rd party USB cord.

I just ordered up one of these bad boys from e13ctron!

Can't wait to throw it in!

I will repeat myself again

i agree i wouldnt say it fits as it should but its do-able. The vibrate switch sits right at the bottom edge. I dont think it effects any functions but it just looks odd. Or you can do as i did and carefully cut the bottom edge of the cutout with an exacto blade and make it perfect. I'm pretty happy i did, you can't even tell.

Favorite Cases so far:

Favorite Cases so far (in no particular order):

Genuine Iphone 4 Bumper: The Iphone bumper is made out of mostly one material that is known to inuslate the Iphone 4 from the Death Grip. It has good quality and not cheap volume buttons. Best if used with the SGP Ultra Optics Anti-Fingerprint for the front protector and SGP Anti-Fingerprint protector for the back protector. Also, can be used with the Colins Danglets for drop protection.

SGP iPhone 4 Case Neo Hybrid and SGP iPhone 4 Case Neo Hybrid EX Series: I like that you get more of the lay on the table design then the original Iphone 4 Bumper. What I don't like it the cheap thin plastic frame, instead of the thicker solid Iphone 4 uniform frame. I don't like the cheap buttons either. It's questionable if the insulation from the cheap plastic frame is adequate. Silicon is a conductive material and will not insulate the Iphone 4. It also questionable if the plastic around the volume buttons will insulate from tuning.

New Redesigned Iskin Solo and Iskin Solo Fx: The Iskin Solo and FX is made uniformly out of the prefered TPU material that will insulate against the death grip. The Iskin Solo is the better looking of the two. Unfortunatley, the lay on the table design of the regular solo is not too good. It would be prefered to use it with the Colins Danglet. The Solo FX has excellent lay on the table design, but not as thin.

Ncipio NGP Case: I have the AT&T version of the Iphone 4, so this case would could work for me. Looks like a all around solid case. As far as stickyness is concerned, it may be an issue. I would have to try it first hand to see if it is bearable or not.

SwitchEasy: The SwitchEasy Vulcan is a TPU case that seems to use the prefered material and has a good lay on the table design. The Vulcan looks to be an excellent choice (thanks RebeccaL) I like the designs of the Capsule Rebel (little thicker than desired), Trim, and Odyssey (little thicker than desired). I am not sure though if the insulation in the important part like the the sides is using TPU that is known to insulate for the death grip. Does anyone know? I had just mostly heard that polycarbonate and TPU insulate against the death grip. The Capsule Rebel and the Odyssey both have a great lay on the table design. The Trim doesn't have a good lay on the table design, but can be used with the Colins Danglet.

If you want a little more protection, I like:

Otterbox Reflex Case: They seem to have the materials for the most part right on this case. Also, its a cutting edge protection design, in a smaller package. Otterbox makes high quality cases.

Seidio Innocase Active Case: Its pretty good protection in a smaller package. It has great signature camera cut outs. They also seemed to be using the right materials. Seidio makes high quality products.

Must haves: SGP Ultra Optics Anti-Fingerprint for the front screen protector. SGP Anti-Fingerprint for the back screen protector.

FWIW, when I took off my Apple Bumper, I noticed a bunch of marks/scratches all around the steel edges surrounding the phone. Not too happy about that since my phone has been in a case (i.e. bumper) with front & back screen protectors since day 1 and is otherwise in mint condition. Pretty weak job by Apple if you ask me.

I'm not having any problems with stickyness with the Incipio NGP on my AT&T iPhone 4. It goes in and out of my pocket very nicely - better than the bumper.

Thanks for the heads up on pricing. Can anyone else confirm that this is the current pricing at Target?

I went back to look at getting another one and it rang up at $20, so apparently, the $4.98 price was just a fluke. Oh well...

No. The odds are quite good that in 100 people asked, there will be duplicate answers.

In fact, the first and second reply of this thread gave the same answer.

What's the point in being a smart-ass? The (actual) point is that there are many different cases and many people like different things; you have to decide what benefits you'd personally like to receive from a case so asking people may not yield the best results to the question because only you know what you like/want/need.

There is not best case, people have different taste.
Personally I would recommend vapor cases.

best balance of protection without being huge--incipio duroshot/magpul fieldcase

I did a review already on the duroshot, but here is a mini one for magpul.

The magpul case is also made of TPU like the duroshot. It looks really sick, because it has that same gun grip/ammo clip look. It is durable tpu, fits very well, and even has little raised rocker for the volume buttons. Also covered is the sleep button. It is textured, but slides well into my pocket, as does the duroshot. The mag-pul case is made in the US which is nice.

One gripe: laydown protection isnt amazing. It is there, for most flat surfaces. Anything bumpy or if something is under the phone it will hit the screen. I love the incipio because I have dropped my phone face flat on a marble floor from 4 feet up, and experienced no physical damage.
