Sadly, the correct answer is, unless the game is MAC exclusive it shouldn't be mentioned here, so Dues ex, Monkey island, etc are all better on PC .
This is a Mac forum, people are discussing the best game they played on their Macs presumably while running the MacOS. The only limit that makes sense to me is excluding those PC games played in Windows on your Mac. Everything else should be fair game even if you think they play better on a PC, it's irrelevant to a best 'Mac' game discussion.

Dark Castle!
Yes! I'd also argue that it was the most technically impressive game written for any machine 8 MHz or less. I can't think of any other game that does more with the hardware it was designed for.

But boy was it challenging!

I'll never forget, there was one Mac in my Elementary school that had the game,

Team Xtreme: Operation Weather Disaster

SO FUN. Doesn't play in OSX I dont think :(

Someone should really remake that into Flash....

It was like Myst-lite.

I'm going to limit myself to Mac-only* games here. But I don't think I can pick just one.

Marathon was there to teach us a FPS didn't have to auto-aim if you could actually use the mouse to point at stuff. Oh so many memories of reading those crazy AI terminals while playing at 3 AM.

Escape Velocity made you fell like you could make a difference in a vast galaxy with just a shuttle and some cargo space.

Realmz was the only time using a "z" instead of an "s" was cool. It also consumed so much of my life that I still don't think World of Warcraft has caught up to hours logged slaying orcs.

Ares because it felt pretty damn cool ordering dozens of ships to attack something while still getting to zoom in and get hands-on shooting with your ship.

*Most of these were ported to Windows and/or their sequels.

Well remembered...Realmz is the precursor to the Avernum series, and an absolutely addictive RPG on Mac...a fabulous game which only suffered from a cumbersome shareware policy for add-on maps... ;)

I always liked how they did maps. Sure you had to pay for them, but that usually meant the quality was pretty high (I bought several and all were great.)

Plus you did get to play them first to check it out. Which is always nice. hehe

Marathon II

Sure the original Marathon is good, but, the second one is just so much better than the first in every way.
I'd like to update my original post in favor of Marathon to include all 3 games in the Marathon Trilogy. I recently replayed them with Aleph One, and they're still a blast. Marathon 2 was a more refined game, but some of the maps from Marathon are, and always will be, classics. Plus, grenade hopping was more exaggerated in the original marathon. Also, it was a truly ground-breaking game, making my Doom-playing PC-using friends very jealous.

Of course there are no 'rules', my thought was more that it would be interesting for folks to really think about a Mac-only or Mac-first game ...

As an after-thought, remember 'Mac Enhanced' games? I used to only play Star Wars: Dark Forces on Mac after it came out since it had 2x resolution and so much better sound ... too bad it died when Classic support dropped ...

I love strategy and hate personal shooting.

Gee, picking up only one isn't easy.

However I wouldn't hesitate much: since 2005, no game has been able to match Zero Hour (second edition of Command & Conquer Generals).
That's for a strategy game that requires 100% attention, high adrenaline but no stress, and lasts no more than 3-4 hours.

In other areas, I find Civilization 2 and Imperialism 2 (on Classic Mac OS 9) still extremely attractive ... but then a game lasts from 12 to 30 hours!

OK I mentioned 3, but hey, I could'nt resist :p

Well, tell that to the cash-strapped student that I was back then... ;) But what a wonderfully immersive game it was.
