Adium

Another vote for Adium

Fire- Crashes to much, dident like the feel of it

AIM Mac- Not Bad, Best File Transfer(to other AIM users), Adds are annoying, not multiple protocol.

Adium-File transfer blows(yea they said they fixed it?), does funky stuff to my buddy lists, other than that great

Proteaus-$$$$$ im poor, plus adium feels nicer

Ichat- Good Video/sound if the other person has ichat. Other than that it feels like a toy, and is completly useless for plain old text instant messenging. (so little options and features)

I'm surprised at how many people don't like Proteus. It's the only shareware I've bought since I switched to Mac. I tried Adium (before Proteus actually) because I like the idea of completely free. But it just seems half-finished to me. I can't really explain exactly what it is about it I don't like, but Proteus is the clear winner for me.

File transfer is sometimes a bit buggy still, as it is with all GAIM clients. However, my vote goes for Adium.

Adium is fine, but I have 2 gripes:

- Each day has a separate log file. I would much rather have my conversations archived in monthly files, especially now that spotlight is around. 30+ files per months sucks, imho. And what about browsing through my logs after a better client comes along? The logs are in html, and I don't really want to be f**king around with a web browser when text edit would do just fine. So I have to use automator to convert all my logs to txt, and then edit them and do some replace alls to get rid of all the html tags. *lesigh*

- The message windows...I don't want bubbles, or a lot of colors, or any of that. I don't want it to look like iChat, really. I find it distracting. I'm amazed that the support for a very barebones chat theme just isn't there. Even the "minimal" message style sticks a person's display picture in front of each chunk of messages...bleh.

Go to adiumxtras.com and download the plain-text style.

File transfer never works for me either. Adium is still the best, though! :)

i wish other clients than mercury supported the msn 7 'status message' feature..or are there plugins for aMSN or adium hidden away somewhere?

My question exactly! There are so many features in msn for pc that none of the mac clients have. Why is there not a clone of the pc one?
-catchbar

In addition to the file transfer woes that everyone else is having, I'm also having issues with Adium not relaying my "idle" status. I've set the preference (or whatever) to show me as idle after 10 minutes of inactivity, but my friends tell me that I'm never ever idle, I'm just "online" or "available" or whatever. (Pardon me for not being at my home computer right now)

Is anyone else having this problem? Or is there something I'm doing wrong?

I disagree. I use a built-in style (Plastic) and there are no buddy icons or extra crap. I miss Simple from the .7x series but Plastic and Minimal are nice. I hate iChat but Adium's message view is just fine.

In general, buying a shareware has some benefits, because when you buy something it's supposed to be good. But even when Aduim is free, the devs are so dedicated to Adium, that there's no reason to buy Proteus. I have tryied both, and I don't see much differences between both. The preferences might be different, but the overall look is similar, and I find Adium more customizable.

The Adium team has became more professional, they redisigned the site, so now the extras and forum are separated from the the main site. If you navigate a bit more through the site, you can see all the projected updates. Also, the frequent updates don't bother me. I actually find it exiting, seeing chances every few days (I also update to betas).

File transfers work perfect for me. In a version a few updates ago file transfers crashed Adium, but that was fixed already. I think webcam is due for version 0.9 if the tool necessary becomes available (not sure about that).

Mercury and aMSN actually send webcam. I haven't been able to do it myself because after Tiger and iWork '05 (not sure which one) iMovie won't detect my Logitech webcam, which is necessary for webcaming (at least that is what Mercury.to suggests).

Bottom line: There's no need to buy Proteus. For eyecandies, simple convos, file transfers use Adium. For webcam, audio, winks, custom emoticons, nudges, use Mercury or aMSN. Altough Mercury is more customizable now, it still looks ugly. And file transfers are still slow in Mercury.

another vote for adium. strangely enough it is the only program that i can get to work with file transfers

I use Adium all the time. There's no reason to use Proteus, because even though it's supposed to be a finished product, it is buggier than Adium, which is still in beta! I've got no complaints about Adium at all, even the file transfer. Honestly, I don't know use the file transfer in any IM program since I know it's not going to be as good and fast as good ol' e-mail.

I WISH I could use Adium, but will stick with iChat until file-transfer works.

I personally find it extremely annoying when someone sends me something without telling me first, and I have say "oh, can't send here. let me sign on to iChat with my other name and try again", and people send me stuff all the time.

I know it's a GAIM issue, but someone from Adium said it wasn't a priority because it's not important to most of their users.

So I'm stuck with iChat, but I'd still recommend Adium out of the 3. I LOVE it minus the file crap.

I've used all three (over the past 5 years), but have since come to rely on Adium. I agree with what you say about Adium's degree of completeness... but that all changed for me in the last week. I finally downloaded the new version. It's many times better than what it was just a few months ago.

Adium, hands down.

Adium for me.

I think that people who've bought Proteus haven't used Adium in over a year. I remember just last summer trying Adium out for the first time and it was extremely buggy and I remember a similar thread to this one on macrumors.com at that time and most people preferred Fire or Proteus.

If you haven't tried AdiumX in over a year...give it another shot.
