I WISH I could use Adium, but will stick with iChat until file-transfer works.

I personally find it extremely annoying when someone sends me something without telling me first, and I have say "oh, can't send here. let me sign on to iChat with my other name and try again", and people send me stuff all the time.

I know it's a GAIM issue, but someone from Adium said it wasn't a priority because it's not important to most of their users.

So I'm stuck with iChat, but I'd still recommend Adium out of the 3. I LOVE it minus the file crap.
Yes, I was part of that debate on the Adium forums. My recommendation—get Adium, love it, and try to ignore the maddening lack of file transfer reliability. libgaim sucks at it and the Adium devs largely don't care. Also, never try to talk to Adam Iser, he's maddeningly infantile. So, enjoy the program, avoid the lead dev like the plague, and you'll be fine.

AOL Instant messenger!...

OK, I'm kidding.

I use adium and iChat. The only thing I dont like about Adium is that you cant do video or audio chat. But most people (that I know of) dont even have a camera attached to their computer.

Adium for me.

I think that people who've bought Proteus haven't used Adium in over a year. I remember just last summer trying Adium out for the first time and it was extremely buggy and I remember a similar thread to this one on macrumors.com at that time and most people preferred Fire or Proteus.

If you haven't tried AdiumX in over a year...give it another shot.

I think Apple would pick Proteus. Adium is a nice program, and I've used the most recent build. But as customizable as the contact list and message windows may be, I still find them ugly. Also, as long as Adium foolishly decides to put the tabs underneath the message window, I will continue to not use it.

So, until Adium looks like this-

- I won't use it.

I also find the way Adium uses sounds to be stupid. You can only use one pack at a time, in Proteus you can pick what sound for what using many different sound packs.

Adium looks pretty cool. It reminds me of Trillian, which I currently use on my Windows PC. I am going to install it next week when I get the Power Mac. I have not heard of the others, though. Sorry.

Adium is actually based on GAIM which is available for windows. I use GAIM on my Dell laptop at work as well as Skype (which, personally, i think is the best).

I use adium i think its great and very user freindly, good thing i found out about it as MSN for mac was doing my head in...

I'm using iChat and a Jabber account to connect to MSN and Yahoo.

It's funny how many people are always saying, is there a Trillian for the Mac or something similar, when Fire was out on the Mac before Trillian was released. In fact back then I think the only other multi-protocol messenger was a program called Everybuddy for Linux.

Anyway, I started using Fire with the public beta, and continued to use it through 10.3, but then I got sick of how much it was crashing, so I tried out Adium. I didn't really like Adiums messaging window, I liked the simpleness of Fire's, and I tried lots of skins and never found one I liked. So now with Tiger I'm using iChat and a Jabber account to connect to MSN and Yahoo.
