So hard. I can't pick the best movie ever, but I can give my favorites (and no, I don't have one favorite).

The 400 Blows
Brazil
Annie Hall
Rushmore

and more recently

Children of Men is making it's way onto my list. I love that movie so much.

EDIT: Almost forgot Sunsent Boulevard. So good. So so good.

Attack of the killer tomatoes:D

oh god shoot me now. I honestly can't believe I actually sat through that entire movie... I still feel complete loathing for it and I saw it something like 8, maybe 10 years ago!

Critisize me if you will, but my nomination has to go to Boondock Saints
... with Amélie as a close second :p

Dangit I'm already getting more broker and broker with my enlarging Criterion Collection set as well as getting more Apple stuff.

Funny that two companies can drive a man completely bankrupt!  :D :apple:

Seriously. Criterion needs to stop putting out so many incredible releases; I spend way too much money on movies.

Wow, of the four you alluded to, 3 are Criterion Collection movies! 400 Blows, Brazil (in a very nice box set) and Rushmore... wow.

I haven't seen Children of Men but I want to so badly!

I love my Criterion release of Brazil. Probably the pride of my collection. :D

I haven't been able to cough up enough cash for that whole Truffaut box set that includes the 400 blows and the sequels. I want it so bad though.

Truffaut is probably my favorite director. I love Day for Night as well.

Tell me about it...the ones that I want on their coming soon list are probably gonna push back my purchase of a new tower by a month.

Hmm... I think the term Handbrake is perhaps unmentionable here? :D

Of course, the SLC public library has a surplus budget of $2 million that they can't figure how to spend so basically I fill in an order for a few Criterion Collection DVD's every so often.

Honestly, I buy the ones that I really really want (Eric Rohmer, etc.) but the ones I'm iffy on, well, you know the story.

The thing is that Criterion Collection is so broad that seriously no one can catch up.

Does anyone here have a copy of Salo on DVD?

The Antoine Doinel box set is awesome...I sat down about a month ago a watched them straight through in one day. The 400 Blows is still my favorite of his, followed by Jules and Jim...other than the later works in the Doinel series, I haven't really seen any of his later works (Day for Night is in my netflix queue, but it's stuck back behind 25 Italian neo-realist films and 40 French films pre-new wave and new wave films starting from 1945 to 1970.)

Yep, I got all of the Doinel dvd's on my hard drive now :D Gotta love it for sure. I really dug Bed and Board a lot, ironically it doesn't get the justice that it deserves for its quirky humor.

Day for Night is another one I wanna see! :D

Not me...and sadly it's not available on Netflix either...another company recently came out with some PPP boxed sets that are in my queue, but I was bummed that Salo wasn't available.

Dang it dang it... the only copy in the whole city of SLC for Salo was stolen from the Tower rental service on 900 S 900 E a few years ago. I wasn't happy about that.

An original copy of this one goes for $300-$400. I was thinking about getting a bootleg version but man, why can't we have this one back in print (perhaps due to the fact that Criterion chose a faulty print and didn't go with the superior BFI version).

I would love to go on a date with my girlfriend to watch Salo. Man, that would be some good discussion about politics and whatnot afterwards. Pasolini rules!

Pasolini rules!

Unfortunately, we never covered him in any of my film classes, so I'm watching him in a couple of weeks (along with Antonioni) after viewing (or reviewing) the early neo-realists and rewatching a bunch of Fellini. It sucks that Salo isn't available, because I was really looking forward to that one.

Indeed, I guess that my only consolation was to watch Momma Roma instead :) However, I still would love to see The Decameron (just ripped, need to get to watch it) because I love that book.

In no particular order, because I'm a loser and can't make my mind up:

The Shawshank Redemption
The Pianist
Schindlers List
Pulp Fiction
LOTR: The Return of the King

The Pianist was a good movie although not Polanski's best however... I prefer his MacBeth flick :D

To who said Citzen Kane..... ughhhh. I hated that movie with a passion.

Anyways, too tough to decide on just one

Not talking about directors:
Spaceballs (actually, Brooks could fall under Director wise. Just not for this film)
Office Space

Director Wise:
Pulp Fiction
Fight Club
Silence of The Lambs
And many of Martin Scorsese's flicks

EDIT: How can I forget Killer Klowns From Outerspace? I kid, I kid. Was amusing though in a cheesy B-Movie way

My goodness, I forgot Office Space. Awesome satire for sure but ironically, Idiocracy seems to have been much better actually. And more controversial Mike Judge by far.

It really does depend on my mood and general frame of mind – what I say now might not be the case in a week or month's time. In saying that, I think Amelie is an absolutely wonderful film.

Amelie truly is a treat. I wouldn't say it is my favorite, but it is high on the list. I really don't know what I would say is tops.

Ignoring the old classics, i'd have to say
Fight Club
Snatch
Lord of the Rings
EDIT: Just read the comment about office space, can't forget that one

It's almost impossible to choose just one. Thus, I must go with Blade Runner. The definitive edition of this is due out on DVD this year, after years of legal problems. First Pre-made VHS tape I ever bought: Blade Runner. First DVD I ever bought: Blade Runner. Hey, why break tradition?

I enjoy lots of different kinds of movies, but I'm afraid I have little use for comedies, romantic or otherwise. The only two movies I can think of where I laughed out loud were the original "Animal House", and "Airplane".

I plan on seeing "The 300" this weekend, just for the testosterone factor. Looks like fun.

I enjoy Tarantino movies a lot, and I'm looking forward to "Grind House".
So fellow Tarantino fans, do you think he'll proceed with Kill Bill III, taking place about 15 years from now?

I must admit, this is the one that first came to mind when I saw this thread. Not because it's the best film ever made, or the cleverest or, the most revolutionary or anything, but because:

It has that certain 'something' about it. A sort of cinematic 'magic'...

and that's the reason I personally watch films, or certainly the reason certain films stick out as amazing. Nothing much happens in the sort of films I enjoy, so Amelie is positively action packed. :p
