As of late: Pan's Labyrinth.

Favorites: Lawrence of Arabia, Once Upon a Time in America, The Godfather, Raging Bull

For acting: A Streetcar Named Desire, On Golden Pond

The Lives of Others (Das Leben der Andern) is one awesome movie with solid plot and very moving and identifiable characters. It is the personal triumph over fascism and conformity that means so much to my heart.

Hmm... I think the term Handbrake is perhaps unmentionable here? :D

Of course, the SLC public library has a surplus budget of $2 million that they can't figure how to spend so basically I fill in an order for a few Criterion Collection DVD's every so often.

Honestly, I buy the ones that I really really want (Eric Rohmer, etc.) but the ones I'm iffy on, well, you know the story.

The thing is that Criterion Collection is so broad that seriously no one can catch up.

Does anyone here have a copy of Salo on DVD?

I don't have a copy of Salo, but I have borrowed a friends bootleg copy.

Most disturbing movie I have ever seen. Ever. Some of those images haunt me to this day. After trying to forget some of the most disturbing ones for the better part of a year, I can't. Oh man. It's just so ****ed up.

As a film student that owns nearly 600 movies on DVD you would think I'd have a favorite. But then it occurs to me, if I had a favorite I probably wouldn't have 600 movies.

So, I'm going with Beetlejuice.

This thread bring out the wanker in some.

My favourite is Willy Wonka and the Chocolate factory. With Gene Wilder. :D
Love this movie. Have loved it since I was a kid. What an epic premies. Who has not dreamt of being invited to explore a chocolate factory. :p

I've said it before and I'll say it again!
That film is prefect for when you're recovering from a hangover!:)

Nice, is there any way that you can PM me so that I can procure a copy of it? Looks like one cool date movie :)

This is the endless debate but it is fun. I always think of the 33 Kong as the best film not only because it is fun but for the impact if had on culture. It inspired countless people to get into the business. Ray Bradbury, Harryhausen and others mention it as having a huge impact on them. Peter Jackson gushes over this film but I loved it prior to his remake. As a kid I studied all I could find on the film and wanted to be the next Ray Harryhausen. Then George Lucas showed up with a dang Kray computer and the rest is history. After Kong I might throw a Kurasowa film in the mix, maybe Samurai or Yojimbo. Both of these have a tremendous impact on the world of film. Clint was helped to fame by an unauthorized remake of Yojimbo and Yul Bryner is a household word cause of the Seven Samurai. Even Bruce Willis saw fit to remake Yojimbo. After all this I would move into the film noir group from the 40's. Gotta love those old movies.

To add to my list from above:

Wages of Fear
Grand Illusion
Split Second (1953) no the Rutger film
Aliens
Them

This is great reading about everyone's favorites. I always have to qualify my favorite films with different lists. My top 10, 25, 50, or 100 etc. I love the 25 year period from 1933 to 1958. You start with Kong and finish with Them.
