Best advice, IMO. He "needs" a phone with a camera and mp3. Riiiight.

I don't mind if he wants a nice phone because he "desires" it and his parents spoil him. I mind it when people say they need a $250 phone for bullspit reasons when that's not the reason at all.

Basic human needs. Clothing (because no one wants to see you butt nekkid), water, and food.

A cellphone is a want. Its like wanting the newest stuff. For example, I want a Core 2 Duo for my computer, but, knowing that I cant afford it, I'm squeezing more life out of my Pentium4 (ocing is fun.)

If I were you personally, I'd just find a cheap phone and use that. Chances are you wont really ever use the camera, and a cheap iPod shuffle is great and about as functional as a MP3 player application built into a phone. I mean, are you really going to constantly use the 3G internet on it? I know I wouldnt want to surf the net on that microscopic screen. Cell phone cameras are junk, even if they are 2 megapixel, due to having no flash, so its very hard to get a good picture. Besides, with the more expensive phones with 3G, it probably starts to get real expensive real quick with all the ringtone downloads, video/audio streaming content, data rates, etc. I know my friends little brother who is 15 had a 3G device, and ran up almost 500 on the phone bill, so it was taken away and now he has a pay-as-you-go thingy.

But I'm not trying to lecture you though, I'm just giving you some insight. The pay-as-you-go are pretty nice too. They used to be crap, but now they're starting to look pretty nice. I'm thinking about buying one so my job can get ahold of me when they need me.

The W580i would be okay... not the best Sony Ericsson slide phone though (this one is their second). The other one, W850i is really good though.

If you wait for your cell phone, I would highly recommend doing so. Sony Ericsson is updating their Java platform, so all new Sony Ericsson phones after Q3 this year. The first one would be the Z750i, the more advanced version of my Z610i.

Just to let u see my phone, it's this one (I don't have any pictures of mine weirdly enough):

It's reflective surface. Plastic keypad doesn't look nice in pictures, but is really nice when it's in your hand. The touch is perfect (keypad as in). As I said before, I recommend Sony Ericsson.

Nokia is pretty good too, but then their designs are too conservative. GO SONY ERICSSON! SE!!!!

save your money, get a crappy fone, u just need it to take calls, the mp3 option is stupidd...the quality is ridiculous... i assume since ur looking at 250 dollar phones, you probably have an iPod and some of the other people are right, you really don't need one until you drive...

Best phone for average 15 year olds.

The best phone for you is the Cingular Firefly. It's really simple and has everything you need. You will be envied by all of your classmates.

Enjoy.

Not at all dude. The firefly is a totally schweet phone. You can even get your mommy to write your name on it for you.

No way!!! My mommy can write my name... I know my little brother (who is 10 now) had a firefly and for a kid it was a lot easier than my first phone when i was 11(Nokia N-Gage first version lol)

I had a 1st gen iPod(got it when I was in 5th, 2002) and i accidently broke the screen last november. So no, I don't have an iPod. I think I deserve to buy a 250 dollar phone when there are 13 year old teenage girls running around with their 6th cell phone and 3rd iPod.

Yeah. Well, I will anyway come June. It's not really that out-of-norm where I live. It's not money from my parents either, it's from relatives who wish to give something at the graduation party I'm going to have.

OP: Are you looking for a smart-phone or a small handset...? It would help if you could explain a little. I currently have a silver RAZR.

Your 13 graduating elementry. LOL. I was 13 graduating middle school. I must have been very young for my grade.

I beleive I NEED a cell phone for my life, considering in this day and age every teacher requires their students to have Broadband.

I think the sony phones are OK, but I don't really like their buttons. Is the sync(samsung) ok? I am out of contract BTW, so I can either get on cheap(yet 2 year contract), or an unlocked one off ebay.

I love my sync. It is sexy. I like the photos too, they are quite good for a phone. Although I'd rather use my NICE cannon.:D

I, as well as many of my friends ranging from 14-17, own a Motorola RAZR phone. :) It does the job very well. An LG chocolate is also popular, but the RAZR is more common now.

Just get the Sony Ericsson w810i through Cingular. It can be had for less than a hundred bucks. Then get a 2 gig Memory Stick Pro Duo on eBay for $17, and one of these so you can use any headphones you want, and it acts as an FM antenna, although the included headset/headphones aren't bad at all.
I get at least 11 hours of music play time with my k800i, and 3 days of non-music use, but I'm not sure about the w810.

Dont get a Razr, the only thing that is good about a Razr is the size. Not a lot of features or anything, just a small phone.

PS: Razr buttons suck

I love the goofballs that say 'iphone'

Clearly...buyiing an iPhone is worthless...it doesn't do anything he wants to do:rolleyes:

To G5unit...I've been socked by the phones I've seen...I have seen nothing that does all the things you can well...music player on phones make me want to try.

Hopefully the iPhone will change that, and if your not willing to pay for it, I think you will be upset at the lack of usablity in an all in one device. (If you use a Mac, the syncing alone is worth the iPhone for me)

iphone if you can afford it.

You will be the envy of all your friends

I would envy you more if you had the Prada phone. Purchasing the iPhone is useless unless you are a complete power user. I mean I don't mind having the iPhone for free, but I wouldn't use all the features on there.

Those who say "get a RAZR" is stupid. I'm sorry if I'm offending some users here but then Motorola is no good. And isn't the point of getting a phone your age to show off really? Get a nice looking one then.

It seems you would actually use the music player a lot. Then get a Walkman phone. It's the best music phone out there. W810i is a good choice. Go Sony Ericsson! Next in line is XpressMusic by Nokia. The 5300 is a good device, though I have to say they have a really cheap plastic look. When are you getting your phone anyways?

The SE W850i would be your best bet for a phone. 1GB of memory, music player features, 2 mega-pixel camera, 3G compatible and decent battery life.

I'm not sure what the mobile phone market it like in the US, but in the UK you can get the phone for free on a £15 a month contract which is a mucho good deal.

If only it were the same here in California. You still have to pay 199 for a Black V3 razr. I'm really liking the Sony phones so far, except for the buttons of course. And I checked out the nokia 5300 in the store and the plastic looks really cheap, so I'm passing.

Yeah exactly. Cheap Plastic look. Now as for the Sony Ericsson buttons, it's actually okay once you get used to it. Most of the Sony Ericsson phones, especially the Walkman ones have a perfect feel to the buttons (after pressing, etc.). Now as for the absence of the send and end keys, you will get used to that (Sony Ericsson uses back and clear keys). The back and clear keys are part of Sony Ericsson's simplicity of their phones and ease of use. Though I cannot guarantee you this, but new Sony Ericsson phones after Q3 will have the send and end keys since Sony Ericsson is updating their Java Platform. I'm guessing this since the Z750i is going to run the new Java Platform with the send and end keys (going to be released Q3). Unfortunately, Sony Ericsson does not let information leak out now, similar to Apple.

You said you like the W580i right? GSMArena, I'm sure, will receive this phone soon to review. I'll post any information when available.

The US sounds so outdated when it comes to cell phones. Ericsson this, Nokia that, I don't think I've seen a Nokia or Ericcson for a long time. 3G? Heard of it, just not in the US.

Since when does it take days to decide on a cell phone ? I just got a cell phone last year when I came to college. I am glad I have it but its kind of annoying at times. Think about it dont waste $200 on a PHONE after you have it for a month you want think it's gods gift to earth anymore. I have a Nokia that was free from verizon and it works just fine make a call receive a call dont need to be able to calculate quantum physics on my cell phone for an extra $100.

What other options are there? LG? Sure the Shine is a nice looking phone, but lacks features. Motorola? I have one, never again.

Sony Ericsson are probably the best of the best for phones at the moment. Solid, reliable, well featured and the better ones are 3G as well.

Nokia? Maybe I'd consider the E65 but thats about it. The N95 is a piece of rubbish.
