I moved from 1Blocker & 1Blocker X to Wipr and am happier.

The 1Blocker developers are pretty unethical. Not simply because they abandoned their app and charged again for a new one which is close to identical. But the new one is actually worse in some ways (reliable iOS <-> Mac rule syncing stopped working).

That is unfortunate. I really liked 1Blocker when it first came out.

I use uBlock Origin. It's both open source and widely popular. You can check out the development from Github link or just install it from the Safari Extension Gallery.

https://safari-extensions.apple.com/details/?id=com.el1t.uBlock-3NU33NW2M3

No doubt that uBlock Origin is the best out there in terms of blocking and system resources. In addition, it's rule lists are not influenced by how much a company is willing to pay to be whitelisted.

To go one step further, use uMatrix from the same developer and make your first custom rule to block Javascript in the Global scope. Then, only allow 1st party JS as necessary until each site you visit works. After a few weeks of tuning you will have the safest and fastest web experience possible.

Last time I checked wipr is the only one that uses native api and doesn't track/sell websites that you visit. You can also add the new website preferences button to taskbar to allow ads on websites you choose.
You don't even need to do that and have the ugly icon on the taskbar. Just go into Safari preferences and add or remove sites from the block list. You can either do a whitelist or a reverse whitelist. This way you can use any blocker and not have to worry about using the crappy UI of the blocker.

Wipr is the best one I've found for the reasons you stated. It costs 1.99 in the App Store but I find it fair because they don't sell ads of their own, which is gross behavior.

On safari? I doubt it. I'd trust the native Safari blocking API over any third party solution but that's just me.

Does that work with macOS? Seems like its more linux based.
It's network-level blocking. It runs on Linux (Don't use Ubuntu 18.04 as its not yet supported) or Raspbian (Raspberry Pi). Build a Pi-hole which acts as your DNS server and point all devices to it for blocking and resolution. Set up your domain controllers or firewall/gateway for DNS forwarding if deployed on a large network. It can even be setup with OpenVPN for blocking while on cellular or away from your home network.

I run it at home and at work and its fabulous.

That's what I thought. My current situation is such, that I'm not wanting, willing or able to down that path. I'll use a software only solution

AdGuard significantly slows down download speed, also causes high ping. Some may not care about the differences, to me it is not acceptable.

I still prefer pure browser extension, rather than kernel extension like AdGuard.

was running ka-block, am now using wipr... which works really well, but... any way to turn it off by site? seems an important feature for an adblocker, for sites that insist on you disabling your blocker.

or, round2: what's the best adblocker for safari with easy access to such options?

It's super easy to set up though. I recently installed one myself running on a Rasberry Pi.

Put the Website button on your Buttonbar - Next to whatever. Easy Access that way.

Same issue as me, sometimes I just switch to Firefox to use websites without ads or disable Wipr for the time being.

did you see tosbsas's post, and mine, just above yours? #44? works fine, so easy...

EDIT: View menu, "customize toolbar", drag the 'website preferences' onto the toolbar. done. click on that icon on a site that asks you to disable your adblocker, uncheck "enable content blockers".

that's it!

Does Wipr (or other recommended) allow custom adblocking by html element (tag ID or Class)? I'm looking for something better than AdBlockPlus / in the AppStore, but it's a pretty handy feature.

I am actually impressed by wipr and Fyde. Fyde is a Special VPN Solution against ads and phishing. And its free. For now only iOS but MacOS is in the Makes

Happy with AdGuard. Use it on Mac and iOS 1Blocker went downhill pretty fast. Devs made a "new" app and wanted to charge more for it and screw over the previous purchasers to claim it was "improved". Uh huh

I use two things in the same time, A) DNS Ad Blocking (AdGuard) B) uBlock Origin on all browsers.
