 wow ... that's a lot of links! :D

i'd just like to say i very much appreciate this thread and have sent it to quite a few of my design friends to help inspire and keep in touch where the rest of the world is going in the world of motion graphics. :)

thanks a lot iGav and the many others who keep this thread full of more links than i could ever go through. :D

peace.

i just came across "The Big Idea" at GettyImages.
http://corporate.gettyimages.com/bigidea/source/index.aspx

alot of short films, made mostly with Getty stock video/stills. and there's also a 'making of' for each one. :)

i also happened upon an awesome motion graphics forum.
http://www.mograph.net/board/

check out the "Reels & Portfolios" section for lots of great links.

i was just watching a bit of Res DVD magazine (which is really great BTW) and i came accross these short films featured on there:

Watermelon Love - this short is available from the site (i think)

MTV Asia - Monkey King

http://www.sherbet.co.uk/html/index.html - this site was mentioned on the DVD, some reels there to check out.

also there was a really outstanding short by Francois Vogel, the mind behind the "HP Picture Frame" ads. the short was called "Readymade". i havnen't found this on the 'net, but a search for Francois Vogel yeilds some interesting results. ;) one of those being:
Method studios.

well i think that was all the 'motion-graphiky' type stuff on there. :p

great thread :D

i came accross Pixelburn the other day, i think they are new but seem to update the site regularly. They also have a motion graphics forum, which looks like it could do with some new members!!

thanks for the link to Pixelburn - some good spots over there. :)

i've just come across a couple of other great sites as well -

bangbang

&

VASAVA

some great motion graphics on both sites, as well as other design work.
check out the Diesel SS005 video on VASAVA - gotta love those Diesel vids! :D

keep the links rolling in! :D

I notice a lot of these production houses, especially the great ones, use discreet flame or smoke...if we don't have that kind of system, let's say aftereffects, finalcut pro, on a powerbook what kind of inspiration can I look at and say, let me try that on my system.

http://www.weworkforthem.com/mustdie_reel.php – I saw that showreel and thought this could've been all AE.

enlighten me

Hey iGav, i´m doing some research for school and i´ve one question, i don´t know if you´ll be able to answer me: can you tell me the difference between traditional animation (like cartoons) and motion graphics?
thanks!!!

I think you need to clarify what you mean by traditional animation. Do you mean cell animation (old-school) or modern Pixar computer based animation? Motion graphics is a big field ... hell, cartoons are really just motion graphics. ;)

... And arn't you supposed to do your own research? I remember there used to be this thing called the library ... maybe that's just yesterday's news.

lol, by traditional animation i mean cell by cell hand-made animation. For example, one of the differences i think there are is that cartoon "traditional animation" works cell by cell, while the new animation, like flash animation, usually uses keyframes, and the rest of the cells are provided by the computer automatically. Another difference is that new animation is developed for different reasons than traditional animation. For example: it´s used for websites, and TV; while the "old animation" is used mostly for cartoons and movies.
I hope you understand what i mean, I haven´t practised my english in a while :p

You should probably start a new thread to cover this ...

Though you are mostly right with your answer ... it may be a bit dated. Modern movies use motion graphics style animation more-so than cell based animation. cell has become more of a style or look than a standard. idependant and animae films seem to still prefer cell, but that is rapidly changing with computer graphics become accessable. Even complex computer motion graphics rely hand drawn frames for the ultimate control. Cell animation is really just doing it by hand with physical tools. The same frame by frame animation style can be done on the computer.

Good luck on your paper. :)

These are really great great links ! Very very good thread and very helpful ! Thanks to iGav.

One question from my site: does anyone know really good sites for 3D animation ? Maybe architectual 3D animation ? If so it would be really great if you can post some links.

Thanks and regards
