Now for an amazing 2.1 setup, check out the EXO's from Blue Sky. The sub is MASSIVE and Sound Quality is phenomonal on the whole setup. They are NOT small speakers though which is why I moved away from them to the A2's, but the sound was amazing... hit HARD and tight, clean etc...

Blue Sky EXO's

the z-2300s looked good for me then i realised the monitors dont have tweeters and its only a PC speaker setup with a minijack so cannot be connected easily to pro audio equipment.

the EXO's now look perfect for me. are they better and more powerful than the z-2300? im not looking for window rattling bass but a good all over sound. they can also be connected to an interface right to reduce interference from a MacBook with a normal minijack?

werd. Almost nothing in this thread so far will compare to the A2's. Especially logitech.

The A2's are cool but hows the bass, is there not much because of the lack of the subwoofer or do they still sound good?

These look awesome from the review. There really cheap too.

I myself use the Bang & Olufsen BeoLab 4 with the Logitech Subwoofer from the Z-2300. I think the Bang & Olufsen would be out of your price range, but you can't go wrong with the Logitech set very good quality for the price.

The only flaw I found in the Beo Lab 4 is the lack of bass, I solved this by reconnecting my old Z-2300 sub woofer. Now I can annoy the neighbors with ease. :D

Whoa they're expensive! I don't think I will be able to afford them right after spending all my money on a iMac. I'm 14 by the way and do a paperound so yeah, slightly out of my budget.:D

Has anyone tried the Razer Mako 2.1 THX Speaker System? They look so cool.

Well the Logitechs are probably a good choice. I just wanted to give you some idea of what I'm using in my setup. :)

Off topic: I had a paper route when I was kid (long ago), thats how I funded my video game purchases. :)

I think your on your own on this one. Although you can base rating of other products off people here, still this is what we think, and can't always know if they will please you. Go to some electronic stores and try some out and see what you want, sometimes its best to do that. I did it with every purchase except for my current Z-5500.

Audioengine A5's in BAMBOO are hot. Incredible sound.
But for $450+: not sure if it's the wisest purchase in this economy.

I'd avoid Logitech, Soundsticks, JBL, et al. all those consumer models.

That said, this discussion resurrects nearly every few years with the same players mentioned: Altec FX6021 (discontinued, I think), Bose Companion's, SWAN M200, now Audioengine, etc.

take your pick.

What is wrong with Logitech? The work just fine. Altec Lansings are also great bang for a budget.

Apart from cost restrictions (OP is on a budget) and to be blunt - I think Bose is garbage - I used to be indifferent to them - until I had a look inside at what they used for components - wow what a ripoff. Having massive engineering overhead is no excuse to charge the prices they get for the components they use.

My opinion formed form my own hands / ears on experiences.

Yeah I think I'll go with the Logitech Z-2300's. I've heard the subwoofer on the Altec Lansing speakers hum in the UK so I'm not getting them.

What line frequency is used in the UK - 50Hz?

I've run into similar problems with motors / power supplies from Germany - all the 50Hz supplies / inductors don't play well with 60Hz (which is what we use in the US). Many over heating and noise issues when they're used over here.

I wonder if that's the issue with the speakers, too?

I have the "Bose Companion 5" and I love them. In my opinion they are the best out there... :)

I second the recommendation for the Bose Companion 5 speakers. Great sound. I was initially skeptical because they connect to the computer via USB 2.0, but you can't tell it. The sound is incredible.

The best thing about them? No more GSM buzz from my 2G iPhone! I couldn't stand the buzzing sound my old JBL speakers made when my iPhone connected to the Edge network to sync things, download voicemail, or just register with the tower.

speakers

I'm happy with my Audio Engine 5's. Simple two speaker stereo and nice sound. The on/off is on the back so a little of an inconvenience but overall, I'm happy after 1 1/2 years. I paid about $325 for a standard black case. Search and there are stores selling them for less than on the manufacturer's site.

Best,

John

I don't really have room for them in my bedroom.

I was thinking about getting those for my apartment to work with airtunes. Can it fill a big room pretty nicely? (it's a studio apartment, low ceilings)

They sound "ok" for computer speakers, but can't compare to bookshelfs/monitors.

And you need a amp and everything? That's too complicated for me, I've only got a small room as well so I can't really have massive speakers all over the place.
