Another option, I just put together an in home production room with Mackie's powered monitors, the MR8's. They are a bit pricey, but bang for buck, for powered speakers, dedicated computer speakers (logitech) cannot compare.
Check out the MR5's. Phenomenal sound for the price. Everything from games to music.
Someone mentioned Klipsch earlier too. I had their ProMedia setup for years and it rocked! Might be worth checking into.
The other idea....get a cheap Dolby Digital receiver. You can get incredible home theater receivers right now for nickels. Everyone is dropping theirs for HDMI. Buy a decent little Denon receiver and a pair of home, bookshelf monitors. Your sound will CRUSH your buddies rigs! Seriously
I had a paper route too, about 13-14. What a cool deal, saving up for the gear you want. Doing it right the first time! Check out the receivers and see what you can pick up locally on craigslist. Then pick up a pair of B&W 602 series 2 or 3 from ebay. BAM! You're up and Rockin!
Don't EVER buy Bose...>Better sound through Research! Friends don't let friends buy Bose...Bose Blows! No Highs, No Lows, MUST be Bose! Much better deals for your hard earned money.
The cool thing about buying good, solid, used gear is that it will retain it's value. A good pair of speakers
should last you 10-20 years. You could use them in your college dorm down the road.
Do it right the first time!
