Sorry.. I honestly couldn't call BSG, ST:DS9, Babylon 5, X-Files, etc. 'drama'. They all scream sci-fi.

With that in mind,

ER.
The Wire.
Dynasty. (c'mon.. 15 minute cat fight between Joan Crawford, Dihann Carroll, and Linda Evans? doesn't get any better than that!)
NYPD Blue.
The West Wing.
Sopranos.

Honourable Mention:
Pick a show on TNT.

Dishonourable Mention:
Cop Rock.

BL.

The Wire. Nothing else comes close. Thread title should be renamed to "Best TV Show of All Time: Not Named The Wire".

I actually have yet to see this series, but I mentioned it because I have heard nothing but glowing reviews. I have to watch that next. I've held off because I'm not too big into the whole police show thing, but I heard it transcends the genre.
Put it in your DVD player. Now.

All this love for The Wire. As I recall, I loved the first season and couldn't get into the second. Maybe I need to try again.

I've recently discovered Showtime shows. In the past 4 months or so I've watched all eps of Dexter and Weeds. Now making my way through Californication.

BSG is most definitely a Drama. It is far smarter and deeper than most other Sci-Fi shows that have been on TV.

Drama? Really? Great show but not the best DRAMA show of all time.

My vote is for breaking bad. If anyone saw the season finale last night I don't know how you couldn't vote for that show. Its unbelievable
I concur! I don't watch much television, but I love Breaking Bad. The ending, though... I'm going to have to wait almost a year to see what happens.

While Sci-Fi may exist as a genre, it actually conveys little about the type of story. Sci-Fi may be Action (The Matrix), Drama (AI), Thriller/Suspense (13th floor), Comedy (Men in Black) etc. Using another genre to describe something that happens to take place in a sci-fi setting is acceptable.

That being said, I don't want many TV shows, but I do like Lost a lot.

It's hard to argue with the staying power of Law & Order. I think it holds some kind of record for a television series.

I think the original does. And SVU has lasted forever as well. Though after 20 some odd years of the franchise, they have recycled more than a few storylines. NYPD Blue in it's heyday was damn good.

Have not seen The Wire, but lots of people I know say its the best.
My favorite was LOST until I watched BSG (2004) over a 4 month period this past fall. Watching the series finale with Lee Adama and all the loss he experienced over the course of the series I wept. LOST was addictive but BSG affected me for months after I finished watching it.

Some others that haven't been mentioned that I think are pretty good, Nip/Tuck and Rescue Me. Nip/Tuck is more of a guilty pleasure, but I have to say Rescue Me is pretty freakin' awesome. The writing is great and it's very gritty/realistic in many aspects.

I'll add one more to the list, and to be honest, would make for the top 2, period.

Dallas. Who Shot J.R. The first cliff hanger, ever.
Dynasty. Aforementioned catfights.

BL.

some of my all-time favorite dramas:

  • buffy the vampire slayer
  • veronica mars
  • the west wing
  • gilmore girls
i know dexter's still airing, but i'm sure when it's all said and done, it'll rank right up there with my favorites above.

I was just about to comment that nobody had mentioned Nip\Tuck. Very much so a guilty pleasure but that show definitely had it's  moments.

FX generally puts out quality TV that not too many people see IMO.

Another vote for The Wire here, and I completely agree with other posters that nothing else even comes close.
In my opinion it is, quite simply, the best TV Drama ever produced and quite possibly the best TV drama that will ever be produced. It truly is in a class of its own
