Another vote for The Wire here, and I completely agree with other posters that nothing else even comes close.
In my opinion it is, quite simply, the best TV Drama ever produced and quite possibly the best TV drama that will ever be produced. It truly is in a class of its own

Aww crap now I'm craving some Stringer Bell. Am I going to have to watch the Wire for a third time through??

I'm surprised Heroes hasn't come up yet. Heroes is awesome.

Maybe the first season and to a lesser extent the second, but taken on average the third and fourth seasons really drag it down IMO.

I like to think of a "great" series as one that has the whole package... acting, directing, writing, cinematography, music, etc., and maintains at a high level for most of its run. Of the ones I've found the time to remain loyal to:

LOST - Probably my favorite of all time
Fringe - My new favorite (stop trying to kill it Fox, you bastards!)
X-Files - My favorite previous to LOST
Dexter - Did I say Fringe was my new favorite?
Sopranos - Fuggetaboutit
My So-Called Life - Way underrated and dead before its time

There are plenty of other good ones on right now, but they don’t quite belong in the list above. I’m sure I’m also forgetting a few from the past…

Wow, I completely forgot about that show. Good ol' grade 9 days....
Thanks for the trip down memory lane;)

I can't believe I forgot to mention Damages. That was a great show. The first season was amazing.

I actually just started watching The Killing on AMC. Thanks to the DVR we've watched the last 6 episodes in the past few days. It's really good so far.

What is with all these people calling West Wing a drama? It was the best comedy ever on TV (at least the first 4 seasons), never a drama.

Doctor Who is the only show I've ever seen that can make me fall on the floor laughing and hide behind the couch out of fear...at the exact same time.

I've gone back and started rewatching some of the early years of Cheers, which, IMHO, still is the funniest sitcom of all time.

I loved the Star Trek incarnations of the late 80s/early 90s. But the only one which has aged fairly well (and can't be considered another season of TNG) is Deep Space Nine. That was Star Trek starting to show a little bit of maturity.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer took TV SciFi up a notch.

So did Firefly.

And Lost. But Lost suffered from the same problem as the new Battlestar Galactica - great buildup, but a disappointing ending. While I admit to actually somewhat liking the ending of Lost, it did feel as though the last season was sort of tacked on. The ending of BSG on the other hand made me kind of stabby.

How do you figure? It was a drama that had comedic elements and characters that you could laugh at, but it was never a comedy.

It was more comic relief than drama, really. At least in the Sorkin years. The humor was so overwhelming, you just could not take the other parts seriously.

Now you will excuse me, "I have to see the man, at the place, about the thing."

Prison Break was the best show in its time ans now breaking bad has taken its slot. Breaking bad is ruling every where.
