playing high system spec. games on a laptop is the problem

listen mate, some of us like to have a laptop thats nice to be able to play games on aswell, i dont have time for a 1000fps nerd machine and quite frankly i think the xbone and ps4 havent lived up to the hype, and im certainly not going to pay how much there asking, coming from bf3 on xbox 360 to bf3 on my mac, the graphics are better and the gameplay much improved, so im not complaining!

True, not complaining at all about the performance. It's just a nice addition to my laptop - that you can play games when you want to rest a bit. Owning a PS3 as well, but mouse control is better here.

I'm not a pro gamer or really much into it, but from "time to timer" - so I don't have to build any machine. Did that 10 years ago and who knows, might do it again in a few years time.

I often noticed hiccups and some framerate dips on my pc with a GTX780, I think it's fair to say the beta is not greatly optimized yet, I imagine performance will be improved a lot in the final release.

Installing AMD Catalyst drivers

I was having problems getting the latest version of the Catalyst Control Center to install too (Early 2011 15" Macbook Pro). I downloaded the 13.9 drives and it would fail during the install. I looked at links I've used in the past and realized that I was downloading the desktop drivers and not the mobile drivers. It's frustrating because AMD doesn't have a link on their page to the mobile drivers that you need.

When you go to to support.amd.com and click on Find Your Driver, in the right hand column there should be a category for Latest AMD Catalyst™ Drivers for Radeon™ HD 7000, HD 6000 and HD 5000 Series. Click on Windows 7/Windows 8 (64-bit) link. There is a link to download Catalyst Software Suite in green. DON'T click on it. Unfortunately this is for desktop series GPU's and not the mobility driver. Instead, right click on Catalyst Software Suite and select Copy Link Address.

Open a new tab and paste in the address. It should appear similar to this: "http://www2.ati.com/drivers/13-9_win7_win8_64_dd_ccc_whql.exe". Now you have to edit the link to point to the mobile version by adding "/mobile" and "_mobility": "http://www2.ati.com/drivers/mobile/13-9_mobility_win7_win8_64_dd_ccc_whql.exe"

It should start the download automatically. Hope this helps.

There's a 331.40 beta Nvidia driver that's described as "essential" for the BF4 beta. I'd try that before jumping to conclusions.

I just installed the driver and I have experienced a lot better frame rates at 1680x1050 at medium settings.

how does overclocking it affect heat dissipation? because i have mine proped up on a sellotape roll for some ventilation and generally its hot, but not super hot, but surely overclocking would push it through 100 degrees?

Also had big problems with heat on iMac 2011 playing BF3. Solution is MacFan for Windows. It controls iMac's fans the way you set it up. Managed to decrease temperature 10 degrees GPU and CPU.

How did u install that driver If I may ask? I get an an error everytime the installer runs on my 2011 MBP with any new drivers downloaded from the AMD site...

I'm surprised it ran that bad but I guess it is what it is. I mean BF3 runs smooth (can't remember the settings).

Glad to hear that the drivers helped a bit and also just remember that it's Beta. Probably some optimization left to do for Dice's part.

So just had a quick spin on BF4 beta!

I know its not optimized yet, but anyone hoping to play this on a rmbp, dont get your hopes up... i was getting about 8fps on auto, and about 30fps on 1200x800 and all settings on low.

Hopefully it'll be more optimized for the release or whatever but so far no good!

Desperately need that 750m 2Gb!!

did u update to the latest nvidia driver?

331.4 beta driver is specific for BF 4.

http://www.nvidia.com/object/notebook-win8-win7-64bit-331.40-beta-driver.html

I m running the game on 1920x1080 with medium and high settings (turning off AA and lowering shadow settings, turn off post process which is useless)
at around 45 fps.

Also, bear in mind this is a beta, and Dice promise better performance in the Retail release.

The only game that I have problem running on rmbp is Rome 2 Total war, which the developer is still trying to sort of the performance issues of the game.

My spec:
Retina MacBook Pro (mid 2012)
2.6 gh - 8gb ram - 512gb ssd
Windows 8.1 64 bit RTM, running battlefield off a Thunderbolt hard drive.

...an enthusiast nerd machine?

First of all, half of your post is completely illegible. And hype has nothing to do with product quality. Hype is always stupid, as the console community is inherently stupid to begin with. How much did you pay for your mac? $1000?
http://pcpartpicker.com/p/14bIc

There's a machine over 10x better than a mac for almost half the price. Want a laptop? Go buy a mATX board and a smaller GPU and a laptop chassis. A bit more expensive, but still hell of a lot less than a Mac.

want to work on x code or aperture go...where?? there is no pc to do that or laptop..you need a mac, and vice versa you can install win on bootcamp

Sorry how is my post 'illegible'? I paid £1100 for my 2013 retina macbook pro, after selling my 2010 one for £500. So £600. I dont want some fat ugly noisy box under my small desk thanks very much. I want a mac, because its sleek, sexy and there the only laptops i havent broken within in a year.

I have updated my SLI GTX 680's to the latest beta driver and I still get crap FPS. And to be honest, I see little to no improvement in visual quality when going from ultra to low settings. Maybe it's just me, I don't know.

My gaming rig is GTX 680's in SLI with triple display setup @ 5760X1080 with Sabertooth Main board with 32 gb of ram, CPU is liquid water cooled @ 4.6 ghz. This game still plays like crap. My rMBP with the latest drivers did improve and is somewhat playable at lower res on low settings. It's the constant stuttering issue that I believe is affecting gameplay. Servers and server lag?

In the end, it's a beta what else do you expect. Give it some time and maybe it will improve.

As for the game itself it's already hacked to pieces by exploits and cheats, so why even bother. Getting shot from across the map on 24 vs 24 map of it's size is pure BS. Attack heli's destroying tanks in a single pass, WTF. The game still has a lot of bugs to fix, and is still in need of desperate rebalancing.. Wait for the final product and then we can pass judgement..

I'm surprised to see so many desktop nVidia users having issues.

2600k@4.5, 12 gigs, 7950@1100/1300 gets Ultra with no AA 45-60.

Oh and as a side note, I notice the game uses about 2.3 gigs of VRAM on ultra.

I will! Haven't recieved mye MBPr 15" w/ 750m yet, eta is tomorrow so maybe I'm lucky.

New member here! Just ordered my rMBP w/ 750GT... Should arrive this weekend... Just in time to play bf4.. But I'll be playing it on an 1080p monitor with g15 ... So it won't feel like a mac at all I imagine...

well obviously not mate, if i wanted a 1000fps nerd machine i'd have just built one. unfortunately im a student with limited space, and having gone through about 5 pc's in, well about 5 years, i settled for a mac for their build quality etc etc. its just nice to be able to play games half decently as well on it!

Well that won't be happening on a Mac. The hardware isn't tailored to gaming at all. Sure, you can play some games on it, but I personally wouldn't settle playing a game like BF 4 with gimped settings. You might as well not bother.

BF 4 on the Xbox 360 & PS3 doesn't look any different to BF 3 as they can't push the machines any more than they did 2 years ago. BF 4 on PC looks and plays amazing (I expect it to be pretty damn good on PS4 & Xbox One too!). So what I am trying to say is that if they have to gimp it on the 360 & PS3, what chance does a Mac have with its weedy GPU?

Well i got my HighEnd MBP Retina 15" with the 750M Geforce and its terrible with battlefield 4. I also saw that the 331.40 drivers (331.65 out by now) won't install on Bootcamp - it sais the system is incompatible. I researched a bit and saw that Apple changed the driver so heavily that its impossible to download a fresh one from NVIDIA. Also tried to remove the Apple provided installer completely but it's also not working ... Would be awesome if anyone could provide some help.

Cheers.
