The price drop was expected simply due to the drop in cost of flash which has been dramatic. What is bothersome though is that Apple decided not to fill the high end with anything. That is no high capacity Touch or a version with new hardware features especially BluTooth and GPS. Both of these would add value that people would be willing to pay for.

64GB flash doesn't exist in a portable device yet. In this refresh Apple wanted to make the device smaller and cheaper. They'll bump up capacity next time around.

Frankly the following is political: I'm begining to wonder if Apple is being run by a bunch of Democrates whom are actually starting to believe their parties crap about the economy. First the economy isn't that bad and some sectors are booming. Second there will always be people with money in any economy to ignore them is just short sighted especially for Apple as they market primarly to the wealthy segment of the economy. Third even if you are not wealthy a Touch offers a way to stay connected at low cost and in a portable manner. This is one reason why I think students, especially college students, love the Touch devices so much - for a little bit of cash it does a lot and is handy in ways a laptop isn't. It is almost like Apple is affraid to aggressively market Touch based devices.
I think you're out of touch with most of society. For starters, Apple wasn't making political moves. Second, if Apple wants to see how their product sales are effected by the economy, they can look at their own sales numbers. It's ridiculous to complain that the company isn't making the product you want because they must be influenced by the other political party.

This release of Touch just boggles my mind. It is not like Apple hasn't been aware of where the functionality desires are. My only conclusion, especially considering the capacity gap, is that they have something that simply wasn't ready for immediate shipment. This we get a couple of low end units for now.

There's a difference between knowing what people would like and making business decisions and compromises about what will be updated. Apple doesn't have an infinite R&D center. They have technology constraints, time limits, and strategic budget concerns to counter their wish-list of new features. You're asking for Apple to spend R&D on a new device that crams in twice the memory, a new antenna, and god knows what else, and your justification is that there are still wealthy people out there who will buy it? I think Apple uses a better system of determining demand at various price points, and as consumers who don't make our own devices, we have the same choice as always - buy it or don't. We've still got better options than we had last year, or two years ago, or 10 years ago.

64GB, third party connectivity, and bluetooth are the real issue

I agree 100% with those of you who are clamoring for 64GB and full-featured bluetooth. These are the kind of updates that everyone can use, and they can even fill niche desires like GPS for smaller populations through third-party accessories.

I really have two big feature requests: One is better connectivity through the dock connector for third-party products like VGA-out, external keyboard, etc. as well as things like GPS modules and so-on. This simple opening would make the device many times more useful for everyone.

Two is 64 GB capacity. I have a 30GB 5th gen iPod, for chrissakes, overflowing in the past year so that now I have to pick and choose what to bring with me. If there were even a 48GB Touch I would have ordered one yesterday. But I can't see getting only 32 GB, and needing space for apps, movies, emails, etc.??

Apple needs to not wait for the next "event" and just release higher capacity as soon as possible. I'm dying here!

I disagree about the politics part of it, doesn't make much sense. Apple is a business and businesses have their own sales data to make decisions on. And even if they actually did decide not to fill in the 'gulf' because they think people won't be able to afford it (a strange and unlikely conclusion); they wouldn't base it on what politicians think is going on in the economy. Democratic or Republican. That would just terrible business sense.

But I do agree there a gap here and no doubt a silent update online is gonna come after the holidays. No event needed, like when they updated the Touch with a 32 gig version.

Lets get something straight for all the people who are screaming that the Touch IS NOT AN IPHONE...

DUH!

But it's also MORE than an ipod.

The ipod nano, classic and shuffle ARE iPODS.

The Touch is something DIFFERENT.

Is it an mp3 player? Yes. But it's also a portable wifi enabled multi purpose unit. You not only can download songs, but check email and surf the web and instant message friends. It's also becoming a nice little portable gaming unit.

My point is...that a CAMERA would make a GREAT addition to the TOUCH.

You could then take pictures on the go and email them to friends instantly. Or create videos on the go and upload them to youtube.

It's not just an ipod, and it's not a phone. Adding a camera STILL won't make it a phone. Some people DON'T want a phone...but WOULD like a camera in the touch!

I do not understand the anger of some of these ITS NOT AN IPHONE people. Why are they so angry?

My only guess is that they are people who bought an iphone and for whatever reason, don't want to see ANY features added to the Touch that the iphone has.

It boarders on the ridiculous. Why would you even care? Are you jealous? Do you secretly resent being locked into a 2 year ATT contract with the iphone?

I just don't get it. You could add a camera AND GPS to the Touch, and it still WOULDN'T BE AN iPHONE!!!

So stop it ok?

People want a Camera in the Touch. And my guess is they will get one with the next update.

You DON'T need to CAPITALIZE every other WORD.

GWAH! I know where you are coming from, but it is totally short sighted... and your grammar sucks, so you look pathetic.

Apple is a business before all else. Despite so much of the liberal nut-hugger, tree-bugger BS they sling about in the infinite loopy, they want to make CASH. BIG MONEY! So I am pretty sure everything they do is well researched and sets money out vs. money in, etc. THEY ARE THEIR OWN EVIL CORPORATION!

The touch is a brilliant and inexpensive mobile platform/comm device/PDA/mp3/video player/mobile gaming platform. If a student buys the lowest end iMac and the lowest end Touch they probably have the most amazing computing and internet platform for a budget.

Dave

first of all learn how to spell.

second, leave the politics in the political forum.

Meh, I would tone down some of the pessimism in this thread. Remember when the iPod touch first came out?

Common complaint #1: "Where's weather? Mail? Maps?" Common Answer: "Be thankful Apple gave us anything at all! Look, we get a browser! And YouTube! If you want it so bad, get an iPhone."
Common complaint #2: "I want speakers." Common Answer: "It's an iPOD! When have iPods ever had speakers?? If you want it so bad, get an iPhone."
Common complaint #3: "It needs a camera. And GPS." Common Answer: "Apple would NEVER include a camera on an IPOD. If you want it so bad, get an iPhone.

#1: Resolved
#2: Resolved
#3: Not resolved, but my point is, what is stopping them? For all we know, Apple in the next year could say "Screw it, this isn't an iPod anymore, it's an amazing PDA. Let's soup it up as much as we can!"

I hate to be an egocentric self-quoter, but I love watching my point get proven over and over in this thread.

I know it is an iPod and not an iPhone, but I really want a camera in the thing. A speaker seems logical, the physical volume buttons seem logical, but with just doing to bare minimum for this 2nd gen iPod touch just isn't enough in my opinion. If someone is willing to buy my old touch for $200 I'll upgrade, but if no one is willing to buy it, then I'll stick with it and not care so much.

they are not going to give you all the features of the Phone. You know why? because people would stop buying the ****ing phone.

Very true. I fully agree. While it would be nice to get GPS and a camera, this would take away the things that set the iPhone and the iPod Touch apart. While it may happen later, Apple just released the iPhone 3G that capitalizes on this techonology and they still need to make money for the device somewhere. You dont expect them to put all the bells and whistles in the iPod Touch a couple months after the 3G launch now do you? Didnt think so.

And just remember: It's an iPod. NOT an iPhone. They may share the same chasis and main features but there's a difference.
