Bigger Displays Rumored for Next Year's iPhone Models

Are people really demanding such huge phones? Pockets are only so big!

The Pro Max models are very popular in many parts of Asia and in Europe.
You can even see a lot of people with those bigger models poking up and out of their pant's pockets and carry-ons in the U.S.

As I've mentioned before, some people want the larger screens, particular for aging eyes, like the old Plus model, but don't want to pay a premium for the Pro Max just to get the screen.
The screen now has ProMotion so that'll be good until Apple decides not to include it anymore.

The weight isn't that much ~8.2~8.5 oz. Anyone who says that it weighs a lot may want to do some exercising.
May be that the larger dimensions of the Pro Max models that make it difficult to wield but the relative weight <8.5 oz shouldn't be an issue.

Has anyone noticed that some men carry a huge wallet in their pant's back pocket or women who carry lots of bulky Stuff in their purses, esp. the tiny ones? They manage well enough.

The Pro Max is Not an issue for some people.
Many don't try the model at the store before buying then complain & regret loudly to then downsize to a smaller iPhone model.
How about trying out the Pro Max iPhone size Before buying?

As far as good for your eyes, obv natural sunlight is the best but when using a device don’t forget NIGHT SHIFT mode! 24/7 is my recommendation…

Off on a little tangent. I think iPhone Air came as a result of creating the iPhone Ultra. I think Liquid Glass is a feature meant for iPhone 20.

Haha no way Apple is interested in the perfect phone…it’s all abt the Pros and the Ultras and then everything else is smaller or lighter but significantly less capable…for now at least, maybe the new guy Ternus has something else up his sleeve…

The rendered image at the top of the article that MacRumors has been using for a little while for its 20th Anniversary iPhone articles doesn't look like what the rumors have been rumoring.
My guess is that this isn't what Apple is working towards.

I wish I could, and regret never developing the skills to create CGI renders, and you're right I wouldn't want to outsource it to an AI since that would be a big exercise in frustration. I've tried to get them to create illustrations to specific specs in the past, and they just don't listen to me, creating something else instead. I know they're supposedly much better now, but my past experience with them keeps me skeptical.

So just a description of what I'm imagining will have to do for now. I doubt whether the entire surface of all four sides of the phone will be part of the display, and instead (as some rumors have it) they'll come down only part of the way, and past that point there will still be a metal band around the phone, but not as wide/tall front to back as the current bands. Maybe the band will be made less instrusive by having the curving-down edges of the display meet the metal band flush at the same height, rather than the current design where the metal band sticks out past the edges of the display. The result of this design is that when you look at the phone face-on, all you see is the surface of the display, all the way out to the edges of the phone, which was one of Jony Ive's goals.

It's because the sales figures for the minis didn't meet Apple's profit goals. They were profitable, but not profitable enough for Apple, compared to the profits from the greater demand for its larger iPhones. The minis definitely weren't loss leaders, but we know Apple really likes big profit margins.

The last iPhone mini, the 13, accounted for less than 5% of total iPhone 13 model sales for the year after its release in Sept 2021. As a percentage of all iPhones sold that year, which includes sales of earlier models Apple still sold, it was only about 2-3% of that year's sales. Sales for the larger iPhones were much higher. The base iPhone 13 accounted for about 28%, the 13 Pro was about 9%, and the 13 Pro Max was about 14-15%. Apple kept selling the 13 mini for about another year as a discounted model (they lowered its US starting price from $699 to $599), for the Sept 2022-Sept 2023 period, but during that year its sales still didn't pick up.

It'll still be a lithium-ion battery, since “silicon” describes the anode material, not the entire battery chemistry. It's also pretty doubtful if it'll be a solid-state battery. It's also doubtful if this anode will be "pure silicon", since though it replaces the graphite or silicon–carbon material in anodes used in current batteries, it might still require binders, conductive additives, coatings, and a copper current collector.

choosing a more expensive phone missing significant features just so it can be thinner isn’t a logical consumer decision. The market already decided that. It’s a fact.

Anything beyond that in favor of the air is an opinion based in illogical consumer decision.

If you stick with the facts you’ll have better arguments. As it relates to defending the air, you shouldn’t have an argument. There isn’t one to be made for the Air.

I think the market and demand are the best arguments and they speak for themselves. There’s a difference between you liking a product and whether or not that product is “good”.

That display looks pretty nice. TECNO is even using similar concept descriptions as Jony Ive did when he was working on trying to make the iPhone borderless: "...the screen appears practically to float in the user’s hand....it offers advantages in daily use, including a more immersive experience while watching videos or playing games."

My guess is that this one of the features Apple might be working on for the 20th Anniversary iPhone, in addition to curved edges for the display. If that's what happens, so much for TECNO's hope that their design will "create a distinct design language for the brand and help it stand out against the competition", unless they mean other Android phones.

A phone with the size and weight of the iPod Nano would be awesome, I'd even settle for one with the size and weight (88g!) of the iPod Touch.

This move to bigger and heavier phones is asking for a disruptive player to enter the market.

I think that if the Ultra resonates and sticks around, we may see a split in the market that will give Apple a route to sell iPad mini sized foldables (unfolded) to one segment who want to carry larger screens, and smaller, more compact phones to those on the other end. The Air vs Pro is an early look into that split. Apple is going thinner and lighter again, while getting leeway to go bulky on the pro.

Haha, I’ve been wearing glasses since 1992. I’m thinking of switching back to contacts. They’re more effort, but they’re better.

Small screen phones still feel uncomfortably cramped to me. I’m not saying you shouldn’t have one, or that Apple shouldn’t make them, I just don’t want one myself.

Apple never did say anything about the Mini being cancelled, did they? I can’t remember anything, not can I find anything. And nothing breeds speculation like the absence of information.
