That's why people are pissed off. With the kind of sales figures they are making, and a design as problematic to warrant its own Antennagate moniker as well as make people fear breaking the glass back, you'd think Apple would have listened to the consumer and made something we actually wanted.

And the fact that a 3.5 inch screen just doesn't cut it anymore.

Anybody who thinks this isn't a disappointment has either:

1) Never had an iPhone before.

2) Never had another smartphone other than the iPhone and religiously worships everything Apple does.

That's the truth and I'm sticking to it. It's shameful to see grown-up people act like this wasn't the biggest disappointment of the year.

So somehow its less shameful for grownups to act like little children and whine about things we can't change?

Implying the iPhone 4 lovers wouldn't whine like little children if your precious 3.5 inch screen were bumped up to 4 inches.

Didn't imply anything. Just saying that it's useless to whine about **** you can't change so why bother? If you look through my post history you will see I wanted a 4 inch screen as well but you wont see me acting like a little child about it...

Few people are acting like children in this forum. There's only rational people who saw the problems with the iPhone 4 design and expected a change and there's irrational people who think the iPhone 4 didn't need any kind of change because they wanted their iPhone to fit into their skinnyjeans on their way to their local organic coffeehouse.

Can you imagine Ford or BMW saying "here's a great new car that can do all these amazing new things, but er its going to look exactly the same as the one we were selling you a year and a half ago....er please still buy it right?"

It would never happen, what on earth were Apple thinking?....they are notorious for drip dripping out each tiny technological advancement in order to maximise profits but keeping with the smaller screen while all other smartphones are going 4"+? keeping a phone made of glass?....

Mental.

So you're saying people who like the current iPhone design aren't rational? Wow. Just wow.

And then there are the people who really should not care as much as as they do. It's a phone. It does phone tasks, and better than it did them before. But it looks the same?.... Get over it.

Because they're smarter than you think they are.

Long-term prospects. I almost want to believe that the only reason they waited 16 months is to see how the iPhone 4 sales are doing and obviously it's selling like hot cake. Keeping that in mind, they planned of introducing a 4S. Not like they're not selling enough iPhones. No reason for them to introduce a brand new design.
Come 2012 and they will introduce an all new design once the current design gets played out among the masses.

I think you answered your own question:

Apple is focused more on money/expansion than innovation now. Steve Jobs implemented the "innovation" objective to bring Apple back from near-death. Now that Apple is on top again, they are focusing on expansion.

They have the MOST loyal customer base I have ever witnessed, and they know that their product will still sell like crazy even if it doesn't have all the new tech out there.

This will work for a couple more years, but without that innovation (mainly in the form of UI/function/design) and not specs, they will start to lose their market again.

It's not about Apple competing with itself (comparing 4s improvements over 4), it's about comparing 4s features to Android features. Android is pretty caught up--not so the case back when the 3gs was introduced.

A phone that is made of glass on the back isn't rational, especially when done 2 years in a row.

I would MUCH rather have a glass back iPhone than a plastic or aluminum back.

If you crack the back glass? Take it to the Apple store and have a brand new back for $29...

Do the same thing to your plastic or aluminum back and it will be scratched/dented all to hell and you won't be able to replace it

Glass = much better option for customers replacement wise :)

Its just the same as the 3G - 3GS, and that did not seem to do Apple any harm with its profits or sales? Whats wrong with their current cycle of new Big change, update, big change, update?

I am a current iPhone 4 user, and will happily upgrade to the 4S next friday as Siri, 8MP camera and 1080p video recording are all big improvements for me. I am hooked on IOS and the App store, and until other brands can truely compete, I will stick with Apple. oh, and some people like skinny jeans and organic coffee ;-)

Who said I wanted aluminum or plastic? There's plenty of phones out there that won't need a new 29 buck plate of glass if you drop it. Think outside the Apple box you've put yourself in.

So your complaining about a $29 piece of glass? How many times do you really plan on breaking your phone? 2 times? maybe 3 at most? Eventually you have to take responsibility for dropping and cracking your phone after 2-3 times

I'm just grateful that Apple finally started having a cheap replacement back. $29 is cheap compared to having a permanently scratched phone like you would with htc, samsung, etc...

So what do you want? A metal back?
The liquid metal company Apple got comes to mind, the carbon fiber specialist Apple hired comes to mind, clearly even Apple knows that glass isn't going to cut it in the years to come.

You realize that most cars keep the same design for at least a few years, right?

Not to mention that the analogy sucks because no car manufacturer expects people to upgrade their cars more than once every 8-10+ years.

I've never dropped my phone, but I think we can all agree that a phone shouldn't require a 29 dollar replacement each time you drop it on its back. It should be tough.
