Biggest company in the world can't redesign and release a new phone in 16 months

It would never happen, what on earth were Apple thinking?....they are notorious for drip dripping out each tiny technological advancement in order to maximise profits but keeping with the smaller screen while all other smartphones are going 4"+? keeping a phone made of glass?....

Mental.

You know nothing about the car business lol.

I think you answered your own question:

Apple is focused more on money/expansion than innovation now. Steve Jobs implemented the "innovation" objective to bring Apple back from near-death. Now that Apple is on top again, they are focusing on expansion.

They have the MOST loyal customer base I have ever witnessed, and they know that their product will still sell like crazy even if it doesn't have all the new tech out there.

This will work for a couple more years, but without that innovation (mainly in the form of UI/function/design) and not specs, they will start to lose their market again.

It's not about Apple competing with itself (comparing 4s improvements over 4), it's about comparing 4s features to Android features. Android is pretty caught up--not so the case back when the 3gs was introduced.

So you think redesigning the exterior case equals innovation? This is the funniest thing, all the doomsayers don't even understand why apple is so successful. Here is a hint, it is not because they needlessly redesign things that are already great just for the hell of it

So your complaining about a $29 piece of glass? How many times do you really plan on breaking your phone? 2 times? maybe 3 at most? Eventually you have to take responsibility for dropping and cracking your phone after 2-3 times
I've never dropped my phone, but I think we can all agree that a phone shouldn't require a 29 dollar replacement each time you drop it on its back. It should be tough.

It is tough. Mine has never broken. Has yours? Do you even have one? That is what I thought.

No smartphone in the history of the world has sold anywhere close to the number of units the iPhone 4 design. Why would they scrap that classic , all time great design so quickly when they can maintain it and even improve the device.

The question is how come in 16 months none of the competition has a device anywhere close as good as the iPhone 4 let alone the iPhone 4s.

you just have to do this test:

close your eyes, get a iPhone 3G/S in one hand and a iPhone 4 in the other hand, and tell me which one feels better in your hand, then you will have the answer, the iPhone 4 is just too clunky and feels unnatural in your hands. people want the teardropdesign back, it's simple as that.

This is actually exactly what car companies always do. They fix/upgrade little parts of the interior and engine, and then come out with a redesigned exterior every 3-5 years (varies wildly).

I really really wanted a 4" screen as well, but it is what it is. I'll probably buy it simply because I can't stand the Android OS, but I really want all the new upgrades they showed off in videos on Apple's site. I'm just hoping the 2012 model gets a larger screen. Eventually this has to happen.

WOW, this is WAY off. Pick any car company you want and any one car... I'll give you a second.... Okay, now show me the 2008 model, the 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012. So now answer this question... Are there 4 different redesigns for that car in that time frame? I would be shocked if you could come up with 2. There are minor tweaks but no redesigns and it will essentially look like the same car the year before. Maybe a little sheet metal change or taillights, more powerful engine, a fuel efficient transmission but not a complete redesign year after year.

I am let down but the iP4s and I think Apple's sales figures will reflect how the world feels about the phone and maybe it will inspire them to get on a more aggressive update cycle but it's Apples company. If you like the phone then buy it. If you don't like it then stick with what you have or buy something else. No one is holding a gun to your head.

The iPhone 4 is the most succesful handset of all time, i can understand why they havent changed it. :apple:

I love it, and was not going to buy one with a bigger screen. I swear its only americans that like big phones!

Ok so simply put if you do not like the upgrade do not get it, by all those telling us they had it and moving to a Samsung or another brand, then get it.

I like my iPhone 4 it does what I need it to, screen size, battery life all work for me, but if you are not happy then by all means get something else, but must we do nothing but complain and bitch ppl out in general because they do not agree with you, C'Mon folks we are all Adults here and we are talking about a phone (which we have the choice to buy or not to buy) this is not a Presidential Election besides what can you do, you are not about to change the way Apple works. Let us all be grown up and accept what we can not change, and be upset just do not bitch ppl out bc they do not agree.

Dude S.T.F.U. already.

Everything you ever wanted in a new iPhone arrived except a phone in the shape of a cock and so now you and others are in a hissy.

*Gorgeous 8MP camera- BSI sensor that is frikkin' da bomb btw if you didn't know already. The part Omnivision/Sony tech is awesome.

*1080p video

*64GB

*DualCore processor - hugely faster than current iP4.

*Fantastic voice recognition (AI) - if you think it's normal VR think again.

*iOS 5

List goes on but nuff said

If this phone was named iPhone 5 or had corners that were a little more rounded you wouldn't be complaining. The iPhone is gorgeous and stunning. No need for another form factor for a while. It's a phone.

Doesn't matter that another phone had similar specs before. Other phones will never be an iPhone unless you're Samsung ;) Go by a Droid.

The more people that switch over to a Droid the better. Less riffraff in the Apple community.

Hahahah. Lol. (spitting out oatmeal). Hahaha. :)

I've been an iPhone user since day 1. I've used other phones as well and my girlfriend is an android user. If they make the phone bigger (4"+ screen) I'll probably switch phones to something smaller.

It's a phone, I need to be able to use it with 1 hand and I need it to fit in my pocket.

Oh, and just for backgrounds sake, I'm 29 and I run an IT department so I'm a tech geek and still don't want a bigger screen.

Can you imagine Ford or BMW saying "here's a great new car that can do all these amazing new things, but er its going to look exactly the same as the one we were selling you a year and a half ago....er please still buy it right?"
If it's twice as fast you can count me in :)

Ford and BMW go 4-5 years without changing a cars design. But they change engine packages, performance packages, interior options, and so on, all the time.

What a horrible analogy. I hate this saying, but "it is what it is", and nothing else. It's not a car, it's a phone.

We wanted a redesign, it didn't come

We are angry, and will show it by not buying iphone 4s - I know this won't really hurt apple much, but it's my money

That's why people are pissed off. With the kind of sales figures they are making, and a design as problematic to warrant its own Antennagate moniker as well as make people fear breaking the glass back, you'd think Apple would have listened to the consumer and made something we actually wanted.

And the fact that a 3.5 inch screen just doesn't cut it anymore.

Anybody who thinks this isn't a disappointment has either:

1) Never had an iPhone before.

2) Never had another smartphone other than the iPhone and religiously worships everything Apple does.

That's the truth and I'm sticking to it. It's shameful to see grown-up people act like this wasn't the biggest disappointment of the year.

Hi! My name is Ivey. I have an iPhone 4. I will be getting an iPhone 4s, and think this is a good upgrade, plus it fits with Apple's upgrade history.

I wasn't sure if you were starting a poll or something, what with you're completely silly statements and all.

A phone that is made of glass on the back isn't rational, especially when done 2 years in a row.

free market. you are free to purchase a phone from a company that meets your needs. There is nothing wrong with the iPhone 4S. The only thing wrong are your unreasonable expectations.

Why would Apple redesign the phone when current ip4 users are still locked into 2 year contracts with their respective carriers? I know some would jump to the new version every year, but not everyone. Whereas should Apple release a new phone next year, Apple will be sure to sell out instantly.

Blame the carriers for Apple's trend of "S" updates.

This is absolutely bang-on.

A huge amount of iPhone 4 customers are still locked into their carriers' contracts. Apple will wait at least 2 years for the redesigned model, so these customers can upgrade.

Simple concept - look no further than the 3G-3GS-4 time line.

Sorry but this "niche enthusiast market" you think is confined to places like Macrumors is nonexistant. Most people want a phone that isn't made of glass and has a bigger screen. They're just buying the iPhone 4 and 4S because either:

1) The iPhone 4 was the first iPhone truly worth buying, so people went to it in droves.

2) They previously had a 3G or 3GS that is on its last legs.

If we did a nationwide scientific poll, you'd see that we are the majority, not some niche.

You are a niche and less significant than you think, despite what you were told by your parents.

You do know that in reality thats exactly what happens! I presume you have never heard of pre and face lift models.

BMW/Audi any company does exactly that, typically half way through a product cycle they launch a facelift model, which is pretty much exactly the same as the current model but has updates and updates of parts that required it.

Myth ... Busted.

Except...car companies reuse body designs for many years and only tweak small things between model years...

Also people who buy cars don't buy a new one every year...that's what leasing is for.

Ummm, take a look at yourself and let us know who's not very grown up here?

It's a perfectly fine update.

The MAJORITY doesn't even believe they need a smartphone of any type let alone require that it has a 4 inch screen. Amount the community of people that use smartphones there may be a majority that would like a 4 inch screen, but amoung all phone users you won't even get a majority for a smartphone.
