Biggest company in the world can't redesign and release a new phone in 16 months

The liquid metal company Apple got comes to mind, the carbon fiber specialist Apple hired comes to mind, clearly even Apple knows that glass isn't going to cut it in the years to come.

So maybe they feel that glass is the best option for right now, and they are working on something better for the future? Surely just going back to plastic would cause an outrage.

Can you imagine Ford or BMW saying "here's a great new car that can do all these amazing new things, but er its going to look exactly the same as the one we were selling you a year and a half ago....er please still buy it right?"

It would never happen, what on earth were Apple thinking?....they are notorious for drip dripping out each tiny technological advancement in order to maximise profits but keeping with the smaller screen while all other smartphones are going 4"+? keeping a phone made of glass?....

Mental.

Is this sarcasm? Cause car manufacturers often go YEARS without even doing any under the hood changes, let alone body style changes.

On topic, there was news back when the earthquake and tsunami in Japan happened stating it would affect Apples production - I'm not sure if this is the case here, but Apple does play their cards close to their chest ad would never let on of this was part of the reasoning.

Why would Apple redesign the phone when current ip4 users are still locked into 2 year contracts with their respective carriers? I know some would jump to the new version every year, but not everyone. Whereas should Apple release a new phone next year, Apple will be sure to sell out instantly.

Blame the carriers for Apple's trend of "S" updates.

The reality of the situation is that there are probably quite a few complex factors that determine what kind of phone Apple is able and willing to produce each year.

Of course no reason will be good enough to keep some people from crying over not getting what they feel Apple owes them for some reason.

Porsche 911. Hasn't changed shape. Ever.

That's why people are pissed off. With the kind of sales figures they are making, and a design as problematic to warrant its own Antennagate moniker as well as make people fear breaking the glass back, you'd think Apple would have listened to the consumer and made something we actually wanted.

And the fact that a 3.5 inch screen just doesn't cut it anymore.

Anybody who thinks this isn't a disappointment has either:

1) Never had an iPhone before.

2) Never had another smartphone other than the iPhone and religiously worships everything Apple does.

That's the truth and I'm sticking to it. It's shameful to see grown-up people act like this wasn't the biggest disappointment of the year.

using your own quote "its shameful to see grownup people act" like spoilt kids in a playground...

the 'we' that you refer to that want a different device...who are they?
aaah the geeks on quality-dwindling tech forums like this one...i forgot they were the majority in the public domain.....

get a grip of reality

Apple doesn't owe me anything. I'm sticking with the 3GS I nearly sold.

The problem is that people actually think a spec bump, which happens every year to every phone, is a wonderful gift from Apple they should line up for.

Dude, realize you are in the minority. The majority of us are happy with this spec upgrade of a currently superior design of the iphone. If Samsung or any other hand set maker had a design coming out that was worth a damn, why do they have a new handset that tops the last every 6 months it seems like? If you want a larger screen, go try android, you will be disappointed.

A new completely redesigned iphone after 16 months??? Why? Your current iphone model sells like gang busters, no other handset is coming close to your market share, corporations are buying your phones in droves.......why would you up and change your design to keep a niche enthusiast market happy? Makes NO sense. Its a business.

It happens ALL of the time with car manufacturers. They don't release completely new and redesigned cars every year (in the same model). Most cycles are 3 years+ or longer with only minor tweaks to the interior or trim on the exterior.

Sorry but this "niche enthusiast market" you think is confined to places like Macrumors is nonexistant. Most people want a phone that isn't made of glass and has a bigger screen. They're just buying the iPhone 4 and 4S because either:

1) The iPhone 4 was the first iPhone truly worth buying, so people went to it in droves.

2) They previously had a 3G or 3GS that is on its last legs.

If we did a nationwide scientific poll, you'd see that we are the majority, not some niche.

The sales numbers of iPhones don't play into your theory. I have a 2.5 year old 3GS and there is nothing wrong with it. I can honestly say I have never had a cell phone last through the contract. And quit telling me what I want or need in a phone.

Well said! iPhone is still one of if not the best looking phones on the market. Apply are not going to come up with a new design every year for the sake of entertainment. Product design is a long process and there is a lot to consider (that teardrop design was the stupidest thing I've seen). iPhone 4 was a huge change from the original and 3g/3gs designs. I wouldn't be surprised if they started working on the design of the 4 not long after releasing the original with 3g/3gs being more of an interim. With the new specs of the 4s, I would say iPhone is back in the lead.

Sorry, you're wrong. I have a SGS2 and is switching to the iPhone 4S. I owned the iPhone 4 before the SGS2.

Stop defending what you're not going to buy.

Dude S.T.F.U. already.

Everything you ever wanted in a new iPhone arrived except a phone in the shape of a cock and so now you and others are in a hissy.

*Gorgeous 8MP camera- BSI sensor that is frikkin' da bomb btw if you didn't know already. The part Omnivision/Sony tech is awesome.

*1080p video

*64GB

*DualCore processor - hugely faster than current iP4.

*Fantastic voice recognition (AI) - if you think it's normal VR think again.

*iOS 5

List goes on but nuff said

If this phone was named iPhone 5 or had corners that were a little more rounded you wouldn't be complaining. The iPhone is gorgeous and stunning. No need for another form factor for a while. It's a phone.

Doesn't matter that another phone had similar specs before. Other phones will never be an iPhone unless you're Samsung ;) Go by a Droid.

The more people that switch over to a Droid the better. Less riffraff in the Apple community.

Hey ImperialX good to see ya :)

Just wondering what are the reasons you are switching? Was considering SGS2 myself so I'd like to know from an expert...

While the iPhone 4S leaves many of us wanting something more, the fact remains that the iPhone is the #1 smartphone in the marketplace. We're kidding ourselves if we think those of us surfing this forum represent the average user. Like it or not (and many of us don't), Apple has proven that they understand the larger market better than we do. We have no clue whats in the product pipeline. The 4S is part of a long-term product strategy we know nothing about. Remember, the next big thing is already in the pipe.

I have to admit the I wish the 4S had a bigger screen (my old eyes aren't what they used to be), but if the dictation in Siri is accurate, then at least my big fingers won't cause so many errors typing. All in all, having seen Apple's presentation and getting an idea of where they're going, I'd be happy to upgrade from my 3GS. I have no doubt at least one iPhone will have a larger retina display in the near future (June?), but mostly it seems to me that they have improved a great design that came close to being optimal in the first place.

However, if Siri doesn't work (e.g., due to network lags etc.) or if Apple screws up iCloud (my MobileMe and iTunes accounts are on different names), then they will truly have egg on their face. If they get it right, then they'll be fine. Indeed, if Siri does work, then Google and Microsoft will have a hard time emulating it, for Apple has no doubt cornered the relevant patents and licenses.

Stop defending what you're not going to buy.

At no time did I say I was not going to buy the 4S. In fact I have plans to do so. There are a great number of attractive features this phone has over my current. Not to mention the integration iCloud and other features provide me without reinvesting in an entirely different ecosystem.
I give two ***** about a bigger screen. It gets to a point where the screen is too big. Really, when it boils down, that is the only real issue people are whining about. And let's be honest. For a good chunk of people, the screen size debate is nothing more than a mine is bigger than yours teenaged testosterone argument.

They actually do that. Porsche do it, too.

Holden have had the VE since 2007 and it's still current...

A phone that is made of glass on the back isn't rational, especially when done 2 years in a row.

Why is it irrational? Phones have glass on the front side, and it's not as though phones always drop on the back side of their body.

Think of the alternatives: Metal scratches and dents. Carbon fiber acts as a barrier to dissipating heat. Plastic scratches, shatters and degrades less gracefully over time than the other materials. Glass might not be perfect, but then again there isn't a perfect alternative.

Few people are acting like children in this forum. There's only rational people who saw the problems with the iPhone 4 design and expected a change and there's irrational people who think the iPhone 4 didn't need any kind of change because they wanted their iPhone to fit into their skinnyjeans on their way to their local organic coffeehouse.

Millions of people which purchased an iPhone 4 don't think there's a problem.

No smartphone in the history of the world has sold anywhere close to the number of units the iPhone 4 design. Why would they scrap that classic , all time great design so quickly when they can maintain it and even improve the device.

The question is how come in 16 months none of the competition has a device anywhere close as good as the iPhone 4 let alone the iPhone 4s.
