Not at all the same. That fragmentation is developers having to cater to different display sizes, different CPUs, and different APIs due to different OS versions all in the same generation of phones. The existence of Siri is just a feature on the OS outside the 3rd party sphere.
but the same exercise can be made on the consumer side.
consumer is excited about getting Siri on his iPhone 4. He just got the phone 2 months back, and he's really looking forward to the feature
iOS 5 is released, he gets it on his iPhone 4. Oh NO! Siri is not compatible with your phone! But but, for a vertically integrated company like Apple, wouldn't they at least allow this on my iPhone 4 that I just bought two months back? No. This an example of
fragmenting the consumer experience.
Canadian carriers sell iPhone 4S to their consumers. Canadian customers are looking forward to Siri. Nope. Can't get it. Only a handful of countries supported at the moment! Wow! Can you imagine if Android 2.2 came out with voice action support on one phone only? Google was able to support voice action feature on multiple phones, on various carriers.
Do you know how many pissed off iPhone 4 users there will be on iOS 5 launch day when they realize that Siri isn't compatible for their phone, but only for iPhone 4S? A good number I'd say.
and do you think steve jbos would have been cool with releasing Siri as a 'Beta' ? This picture here is sooo un-steve jobs like. I am a little worried with Apple right now. Sure their iPhone 4S will sell, but duking it out with Samsung isn't in the best interest of neither company, nor the industry as a whole. Unless we all want innovation to slow down.
This is not the Apple way. Features are released when they're fully completed. Heh, its got a fat BETA stamp on the feature. Great! Sure Steve Jobs woulda been cool with that.
