becasue the UI has worked since 2007, people want all the fancy features than they will whine that phone is slow or this or that

apple keeps things simple so they work

compare PCs and Macs, PCs kick but with specs and are cheaper but guess what? apple still sells a lot of Macs because people find them more stable and reliable

yet PC's outsell Macs by a large margin still.

and the iPhone 3GS, and iPhone 4 will not get Siri.

Canadian carriers can't even get Siri on their iPhone 4S neither.

Thats quite a bit of fragmentation. Sorry but Apple can't make that claim anymore of Android being 'fragmented' any longer, as they do the same thing.

Also, good luck with the iPhone 4 battery life on iOS 5. Won't be as good as iOS 4 in terms of battery life.

i really dont understand how apple fankids are still happy with the same 3.5 inch screen, same UI since 2007.

Because anyone who has been paying attention to what Apple does for the last, oh, 30 years or so, realizes that this is how Apple operates.

That's because there are about 10 million PC models, most of which are much cheaper than any Mac.

You might want to do some research into who makes the most money from their desktop computer sales, and which desktop model specifically sells the most (at least in the U.S.).

That's ridiculous. All fragmentation is not the same.

The iPhone 4S might have a smaller screen than most of the competition, but it still smokes all of them when it comes to performance and quality.

Move on to Android if you want. You'll be back though.

Nonsense. I just sold my iPhone 4 and got the Galaxy S2 and it kicks the iPhone's butt in performance. I would imagine it is even faster than the 4S as well. Of course, the jury will be out on that until it's actually released. If you played around with one for a few minutes, you would see what I mean. I'm no iPhone hater, just keeping it real.

As for quality, yes it's no glass sandwich with a stainless steel wrapper, but I keep a case on my phone anyway, so that's a non-issue for me. And, oh ya, the screen is phenomenal on the Galaxy S2 in spite of the fact that it's slightly lower resolution.

yes of course PC out sell Mac, not everyone will spend 2K on a computer when you can get a PC for 200$

and i agree iOS 5 will probably kill batteries on 3GS and I4 thats usually what happens when new software meets old hardware

Not at all the same. That fragmentation is developers having to cater to different display sizes, different CPUs, and different APIs due to different OS versions all in the same generation of phones. The existence of Siri is just a feature on the OS outside the 3rd party sphere.

That's why people are pissed off. With the kind of sales figures they are making, and a design as problematic to warrant its own Antennagate moniker as well as make people fear breaking the glass back, you'd think Apple would have listened to the consumer and made something we actually wanted.

And the fact that a 3.5 inch screen just doesn't cut it anymore.

Anybody who thinks this isn't a disappointment has either:

1) Never had an iPhone before.

2) Never had another smartphone other than the iPhone and religiously worships everything Apple does.

That's the truth and I'm sticking to it. It's shameful to see grown-up people act like this wasn't the biggest disappointment of the year.[

It's truly shameful that anyone would consider a phone coming out as something to be disappointed by or at all important. Because guess what? you'll be doing the exact same thing next year, expect you'll be complaining about how there isn't a 10" screen and not 5G on it. you know who gets disappointed and out of sorts when something isn't what they want? Kids who are 5 years old, not adults.

Bingo

I've been reading the threads here and I see a lot of complaints that Apple did not release an iPhone 5 but what's really lacking? People are disappointed but apart from a larger screen, I'm not really seeing what the core issues are. Were people expecting to see a different body? Sure it would be nice to have a bigger screen but the styling is ahead of its competitors and there's really no need to update it. Apple's approach is not much different from its computers...same aluminum body...faster hardware...updated software. I'm getting the sense that people are just disappointed because there's nothing visually different to hold but what really makes a good phone great is the software and internal hardware (performance), and both are getting a good boost.

Apple isn't the biggest company in the world as of yesterday...

The stock was shot and lost 5%. It did recover a bit, but Exxon is larger than apple for now.

I think that's the main reason. The LTE was a pipedream as we know it's a major battery hog at this point and they wanted to make a world phone for both CDMA and GSM, but a larger display is something they could've implemented and many wanted.

My guess: if Apple did everything the same and increased the display by .3-.5 inches, the internet would've been singing the praises.

Biggest disappointment of the year was the American government.

Compared to that the iPhone 4S announcement was the equivalent of Jesus, Muhammad, Buddha, and nothing (for the atheists) sitting down together and smoking a fat one.

While I concur with the valid points you have made. There is one thing to know about Apple. They've got the majority of their customers trained to be submissive to Apple's every whim.

They (the worshipers) routinely recite the company line: Apple does what they want, when they want, and we think that's wonderful.

Translated, the Boss is Apple, the subservient ones are the customers.

They wouldn't have it any other way. It removes all responsibility from them. They just sit back and wait.

Once Apple is good and ready, they open their wallets, give the money to Apple and take home whatever is in the box.

It's as simple as that. Thinking for oneself is highly frowned upon. :D

but the same exercise can be made on the consumer side.

consumer is excited about getting Siri on his iPhone 4. He just got the phone 2 months back, and he's really looking forward to the feature

iOS 5 is released, he gets it on his iPhone 4. Oh NO! Siri is not compatible with your phone! But but, for a vertically integrated company like Apple, wouldn't they at least allow this on my iPhone 4 that I just bought two months back? No. This an example of fragmenting the consumer experience.

Canadian carriers sell iPhone 4S to their consumers. Canadian customers are looking forward to Siri. Nope. Can't get it. Only a handful of countries supported at the moment! Wow! Can you imagine if Android 2.2 came out with voice action support on one phone only? Google was able to support voice action feature on multiple phones, on various carriers.

Do you know how many pissed off iPhone 4 users there will be on iOS 5 launch day when they realize that Siri isn't compatible for their phone, but only for iPhone 4S? A good number I'd say.

and do you think steve jbos would have been cool with releasing Siri as a 'Beta' ? This picture here is sooo un-steve jobs like. I am a little worried with Apple right now. Sure their iPhone 4S will sell, but duking it out with Samsung isn't in the best interest of neither company, nor the industry as a whole. Unless we all want innovation to slow down.

This is not the Apple way. Features are released when they're fully completed. Heh, its got a fat BETA stamp on the feature. Great! Sure Steve Jobs woulda been cool with that.

Can you imagine Ford or BMW saying "here's a great new car that can do all these amazing new things, but er its going to look exactly the same as the one we were selling you a year and a half ago....er please still buy it right?"

It would never happen, what on earth were Apple thinking?....they are notorious for drip dripping out each tiny technological advancement in order to maximise profits but keeping with the smaller screen while all other smartphones are going 4"+? keeping a phone made of glass?....

Mental.

I hate to break it to you but BMW and Ford run the same system as apple did. For example BMW made the new look for the 3-series a few years ago. Except for minor changes the car has looked exactly the same since then. BMW has great sales and continue to do so.

BTW, the 3 series has looked exactly the same since 2005 except for minor changes like taillights changes and etc.

I think you will find that Samsung are a lot bigger than Apple, mobile phones are just a tiny part of samsungs company, tvs, kitchen goods, heavy building equipment, tractors, satellites, etc etc.....

The OP is missing the point a bit.

The point is that the biggest company in the world doesn't have to redesign and release a new phone in 16 months, because their 16 month old phone is already the best-selling phone in the world. An improved version will sell just as well. It doesn't beg a redesign.

Of all the updates the iPhone 4 could have used, they took care of almost all of them. Better processor, better camera, better software, better antenna, more memory. What were you people expecting?

That's fair point on consumers lose out, especially the Canuck part but far from the fragmentation that's used to criticize Android, it's just a feature missing out. Did consumers buy iPhone 4 with Apple touting the Siri feature? Does Siri affect how developers make their apps because some APIs will create incompatibility? Does Siri create situations where not all iPhone 4S not getting bug patches? Fragmentation is nothing like a single feature missing.

Why is anybody comparing cars to phones? Phones are cheap. Phones, for most people, can be purchased every year or so. Cars are at least 20 times as expensive as phones, and therefore cannot be purchased every year or even every 5 years for most people.

That's why a design on a phone happens much faster than it should or does on a car.

lets see how MR will handle the load on iOS 5 launch day when iPhone 4 users realize they can't use Siri on their phone. Wonder how many threads will be created just from this issue :)

Depends on your metric.
