I've never dropped my phone, but I think we can all agree that a phone shouldn't require a 29 dollar replacement each time you drop it on its back. It should be tough.

The iPhone 4S might have a smaller screen than most of the competition, but it still smokes all of them when it comes to performance and quality.

Move on to Android if you want. You'll be back though.

It's not as if Android will never catch up to iPhone in terms of speed and quality. By the end of 2012 both Apple and Google will be neck and neck at the pace Google is going. Apple will soon be at the point where they can't let Google catch a breath like they did with this 4S or they will lose customers like crazy.

I would MUCH rather have a glass back iPhone than a plastic or aluminum back.

If you crack the back glass? Take it to the Apple store and have a brand new back for $29...

Do the same thing to your plastic or aluminum back and it will be scratched/dented all to hell and you won't be able to replace it

Glass = much better option for customers replacement wise :)

I got a very old "plastic" phone, it has fallen on the streets many times over the years, still it's like new.

Yet I see so many people with cracked glass.

Build quality sucks of the iPhone.

As a fan I would have liked to see a total redesign.

As a shareholder I'm satisfied they made the right decision.

well aren't you just a whiny entitled little consumer.
It's not about feeling entitled. Nobody here thinks Apple owes them anything. It's just that most of us won't be interested in buying the iPhone this year. The sales figures will show that.

Why you didn't complain when 3G and 3GS were released. The same design but new functions.
The iPhone was still in its infancy and didn't have a ridiculous glass back. Apple just wasn't as profitable as it is now so people gave them some leeway.

By the 5th year, you'd expect a tough backplate and a screen that everybody be satified with, and it's been established many times now that the overwhelming majority of people on this forum feel that 4 inches is the sweet spot for an iPhone.

They re-designed it ok and probably the iPhone 5S as well.

The problem is obviously a component issue, doubtless not helped by Apple & Samsung slugging it out in the courts.

Old Chinese proverb state that it's not wise to get in a fight with your major component supplier, especially if they're in the same market share...

I hear ya, and i hate the glass as well. Since my phone is already out of warranty I have been thinking of buying the aluminum back that is being sold on the internet. My cousin installed it and it looks sweet.

I don't know what it is with everybody hands in the air disappointed with the 4S release, some threatening their switching to Android. Have you guys checked a spec comparison between the two? As far as I've seen, all the Bionic has on the 4S is 4G and a larger screen. Meanwhile, the iPhone has:

- Better OS (by a long-shot)
- Siri (do not underestimate this program, and it's future potential)
- 100$ less per 16GB.
- Superior display/screen
- A more well-designed camera, more features, better video/picture capabilities (via video image stability and face recognition software)
- Bluetooth 4.0, which has upgrades speed, battery efficiency, and options.
- 3 carriers as opposed to one, with AT&T having access to a faster and more stable 3G network.
- Gyroscope

You simply can't use an Android the same way you can an iPhone. I've never seen somebody use it that way. It dubs as a great iPod (I get to sell my iTouch for 200$ now, that's a ****ing deal is it not?). As stated above the operating system is LEAGUES ahead and my god is that Google OS annoying to deal with. Everything Apple is just so seamless and fun to have, this being no different and no worse than before. They're doing the right thing keeping the iPhone small, because it's a damn phone and it's just the way Steve Jobs wanted it. I don't want some cumbersome thing in my pocket, both more prone to scratches and more prone to shattering. I think most people would also agree.

I feel like I could go on for so much longer on why I prefer the iPhone 4S over anything coming out now or even until the 5 makes it's debut. People just need to quit being disappointed and look at the bigger picture of everything.

P.S. - 4G can suck it. It's a huge battery drainer and pages already load fast enough as is on 3G. I'm just fine with that until the batteries catch up to it, and until the networks are fully established. +1 again on Apple for making the right choice there.

According to whom? Apple still was one of the top tech companies in the world when the 3G/3GS was on the market. Maybe not in the same magnitude in terms of where they are at as a company now. So I don't really see how your sentence above can be used as an excuse. That's along the lines of people saying we'll give Tim Cook a pass since this was the first product announcement as CEO.

Hate to tell you this, but Google got downgraded today. Might want to check the news.

Yep...and i'll still be buying one next Friday. :) Sue me.

I'll be buying two for the wife and I -- off contract! -- because our ip4 handsets had amazing resell value.

Folks here can't accept Apple's release cycle which, for their convenience, jives with their contract cycle. We get an overhaul every two years. HTC, Samsung and the Android crowd have skewed the expectations by pushing out handsets every three months or so. They practically pop out of gumball machines lol.

Yeah, sure. Apple had 16 months. Clearly they were resting on their laurels and/or circle-jerking the entire time. I'm sure some of that time was spent on massive software initiatives (iOS 5, iCloud, Lion), The Changing of the Guard from Jobs to Cook, and perhaps Apple felt some pity for the new VZW users they onboarded 8 months ago. A June/July launch surely would've sent them nerdraging to Android, no?

Can't make everyone happy, just need to make most of them happy. Let the sales figures speak for themselves in the coming months and year.

I love iPhone 4 design and was actually hoping that apple would keep it.

PS: for those who complains about small screen size, just get an AT&T iPad 3G ;)

well aren't you just a whiny entitled little consumer.
This type of reaction doesn't surprise me, it's just as much Apple's fault as it is the consumer's fault. When Apple's marketing is based on "magical" products, it's hard to top themselves every time - "incremental upgrade" just doesn't seem as "magical."

Not my case, there is an ip4 in my house, it was dropped in a hill and slide all the way to the bottom, needless to say that it wasn't a smooth street... at all.

Not a single scratch.

I'm sure my 3gs had gone through that it would be full of scratches in the back.

I remember back in the days when phones were so full of scratches that it was just normal. And still is the case for most devices.

What are you talking about?

Google was downgraded. Seems to be a speculation more than factual

NEW YORK -- Shares of Google Inc. slipped Wednesday after a Stifel Nicolaus analyst downgraded the online search leader, saying that the company is starting to lose focus and that its recent acquisition of Motorola Mobility could distract senior executives.

While the iPhone 4S leaves many of us wanting something more, the fact remains that the iPhone is the #1 smartphone in the marketplace. We're kidding ourselves if we think those of us surfing this forum represent the average user. Like it or not (and many of us don't), Apple has proven that they understand the larger market better than we do. We have no clue whats in the product pipeline. The 4S is part of a long-term product strategy we know nothing about. Remember, the next big thing is already in the pipe.

Probably the smartest thing anyone has said in this thread.

Would I have liked a shiny new design, for the sake of shiny and new? Who wouldn't.

Will I get a 4s and love it? Yes, and countless millions will too.

Strictly speaking of the size, design, and quality of the phone, I can resoundingly say it is my personal preference after (working in IT and) handling dozens of competitor's phones.

My iPhone 4 is over a year old now and it pretty much looks like it did when I took it out of the box. Never used a cover, never dropped it. Just slip it in my pocket and practically forget it's there.

As for the screen issue, not once have I thought the 3.5" retina display is too small. If you want a bigger screen, hold it closer to your face! The retina display looks superb at any distance.

i really dont understand how apple fankids are still happy with the same 3.5 inch screen, same UI since 2007.

i just. don't. get it.

there are so many other phones out there. Windows Mango phones, soon to be released Android phones that look very nice.

Somebody, please!!!

Start a service that puts the iPhone innards inside a case with a 4-4.5 inch screen so that all of these whiney people can be happy and go on with their lives!!

Mango looks like ****, and Ice Cream Sandwich is Android's first shot at producing a UI that doesn't look like I put a 5 year old port of Linux on my phone.

The iPhone's screen is too small but its UI still has yet to be beat.

becasue the UI has worked since 2007, people want all the fancy features than they will whine that phone is slow or this or that

apple keeps things simple so they work

compare PCs and Macs, PCs kick but with specs and are cheaper but guess what? apple still sells a lot of Macs because people find them more stable and reliable
