The little sparrows of Rome…
BiblioBar, Rome

Edit: My favourite coffee place in Rome. Right next to the river, great coffee, friendly staff, great music and you can still get a €1 caffé.

The little sparrows are special though. Hopping and flitting about.

The side of Rome most tourists never see.

We have had really frigid weather here (although thankfully things are starting to warm up a little now) and the birds are definitely not happy about it. I was surprised to look out today and see a Gull at the water's edge, but by the time I'd grabbed a camera he had taken off because in the meantime a Crow had also come along to check things out, too. Geese were nowhere in sight. It was really odd to see both a Gull and a Crow here -- they are not usual visitors, especially in wintertime.

....And under the ice she goes! We still have ice on our small lake, although thankfully today there has been some thawing. It's been a while since the Hooded Mergansers have visited, so I was happy to see a pair of them today out there trying to figure out the changes in the environment, especially in what had previously been a familiar watery landscape.

So the two of them were swimming closer to the icy edge of where the liquid water stops and the actual ice begins.....and the female decided to just go ahead and dive under the surface (including the ice) to see if she could snag a nice fishy treat..... Alas, she didn't succeed this time, but hopefully at some point today she and her companion finally did. The two of them continued to hang around here for quite a while this afternoon, so the fishing must've been good after all!

Rare sighting of a Cooper's hawk. This one is gathering nesting material. I watched it break off branches and fly off to a nest, soon to return for more material.

Forgive me for not having the energy to check if I’ve posted this same pic earlier in the thread. I cannot tell if this is (in my photo) a Coopers Hawk or a Sharp-Shinned Hawk. The two species look almost exactly the same, and when I look up what the small differences are supposed to be I feel some from each kind apply, lol.

Those shins do look sharp, though, so I’ve decided to assume it’s a Sharp-Shinned, lol.

When we get some snow coverage, the cardinals have to come up to the feeder. I’ve had these feeders up for ten years, and for all of that time I had only very rarely seen two males there at once. Suddenly that day(just last week) we had up to five at a time.
