Just found out my logic board went bad, Apple is overnighting a new one to the repair place. Said there was some light blinking on the video card? What would cause a logic board to just "go bad" all of a sudden, and is it likely to happen again?

Bad quality capacitors happen every so often.
A good indication of if this was the case is what it smelled like afterwards.

If you let the magic smoke escape, 'putey won't run ;)

jumping on this with everyone else, no local stores, but found one that said they can get me the deal (and they are in the same state)

I just hope that there are some still around next week.

This deal is alot better than the $1399 iMac 2.8 or $760 Mac mini 2.0 (upgrade myself) that I have been considering.

Chicago mac pros

Oooh, I'll be in Chicago this week. Do you need to prove residency in Chicago?

No proof of residency required, however, I seem to have gotten the last one (2.8 x2) in this area. Some of the higher end ones may be left. This particular discount only applies to the discontinued mac pro's. Apple is calling these "end of life" I was told that this is the first time they've sold discontinued products locally- they usually are shipped back and sold on the 'net.

Confirmed - after dealing with 2 local stores that were very arrogant and nasty, the closer of which gives wrong answers continually (most recently, telling me the output resolution of a white mb to an external monitor is the same as the built in screen). I drove 3 hours today to get the deal from a store where the employees were as nice as can be...all of them! Apparently, they didn't get the "Treat Customers Like Idiots" memo. It's nice to know it's not the same way in all stores. I'll be waiting until I travel next time I need something from the Apple Store instead of going to the local ones.

Fwiw, Im in LA (city not state) and I figured I would just skip looking in the city. There was another poster who said they had. So I called the Apple Store Victoria Gardens‎. Arthur, had to look up the EOL prices but eventually "found" the 2.8 for 1899.99. Although the apple care was 249.00. He has one left, but didnt mention anything about shipping.

This is what he has left, 1x 2.8 (thinking he may have a few more as they appeared out of the back), 3.2 for 3599. imac 2.0 for 899, imac 2.6 20" for 1049. and the imac 2.8 24" for 11xx (i dont remember the last part). The 30" ACD was only 5% off like others have reported.

After sweet talking the business rep in Fort Worth I managed to get mine knocked down to 1899 even though I did not have a previously established business relationship. It took about an hour and a half to get them to help me out but they eventually did. Now if I need to make a purchase I will be driving out of my way 30 minutes to the Fort Worth store just to help those guys out.

I am super excited with my new purchase.

Thanks to the op, I got mine yesterday. The first Apple store I went to had one and offered it for the original price:eek:. They didn't know about the business deal. I called another store and got a business specialist, who knew what I was talking about. I got it from that store for $1899. This is in CT. I have it hooked up in my studio using Logic. It is great:)

ok, I should now be able to get someone to buy me a beer no matter what state I'm in.

It was a little bit of "glad I asked" and dumb luck.

No doubt, thanks Guava! Never thought I'd be able to afford an eight-core Mac Pro, especially when the new ones came out at $3299, so this is just an insanely good deal. First post from my NEW $1899 octo-core Mac Pro!

Cheers,
Jim

Can't find any Apple stores in the NYC area who have any 8-core Mac Pros left over. :(

I'd try SoHo.

Alexies is the business salesperson there. He can locate one from a sister store.

If not try calling the upstate locations like syracuse. That's what I did and I am picking up my 2.8 tomorrow.

Another happy $1899 '08 2.8 octo customer here. I simply needed to show a business card. The biz rep was very helpful.
Thanks for the tip guavaman.

EOL Business Discount

Scored the last 2008 2.8 GHz Octo-Core MacPro at the Short Pump Apple Store in Richmond, Virginia today for $1899 thanks to this thread. Quite an upgrade from my 2003 2 Ghz Dual G5 PowerMac.

This is amongst the best discounts (over 30% on this machine's original price) Apple has ever offered and is comparable to that available to developers and employees. EOL products of all kinds will be available at a discount at all Apple retail store to business customers on an ongoing basis. The business representative was not aware of the program, but confirmed the prices when he went to the back and seemed incredulous. All he required was a business card, which I am sure will be entered into a customer database.

If you know what you want, better hurry!

EOL Discounts

Guys, Apple typically posts end of life discounts first to the employees and then to businesses who purchased from the store. The standard business discount is up to 10% depending on your rep. In addition, if you happen to have a friend that works for Apple, they can get you 10% of anything in the store, anytime. The education discount is anywhere from 8-10% depending on the model. The ultimate deals are quarterly specials, where the employees can purchase for themseleves or friends and family absolute steals. A brand new iMac 20inch that listed for $1199, is $749 in the store for them at quarterly price, $799 for friends and family. Also 28% off all items in Apple refurb store (off list price). Educations has the best price on AppleCare, around 33% off, employees only get 25% off. The deal at $1899 is to get rid of stock, and that really can be for anyone who has purchased before, it just depends on the store manager. They prefer business customers because they usually return to purchase more equipment. All I can say is I am a happy MacPro 2009 owner from a MacPro 2008 2.8 that I absolutely loved.

Peace,
Noushy

So I just returned with a 2.8 pro from the apple store. I don't need all the power, but I was considering a 24" from the refurb store and this is only a couple hundred more and will last twice as long. Plus I have a dual display set up and multiple HD's that can go into the pro. I know I am a poser, but a poser who got a screaming deal.

Heart was set on a older quad, but for less than the price of a quad refurb I got this.

Trying to sell off my other macs before I open it and play with it. It is staring at me, telling me to open it, mocking me.

The internet will be so much faster with 8 cores!

wow..it sucks to be in australia. the best i got was $3699 with my edu discount RRP$3999. So thats like 2,547.87 USD. Pretty annoying that the guy didn't want to help out at all even thought they're old models. Oh well... at least it's a good machine.

so to everyone who got their mac pro 2008 2.8 8core, it only comes with 2GB of RAM and video card with only 128

can we upgrade the video card? and where do you guys like to buy your ram? memory upgrade wouldn't be too expensive I don't think

What is the performance like on the 2.8 vs the new 2.26?

Really?

Last I checked you were all over the other threads starting the same argument. Please don't clutter this thread to. Tell you what, build me the computer that you were speaking of and sell it to me for 10% profit and sign a contract that you will cover it for the next 3 years for another $250 in the same exact manner apple does. Also, make sure it runs FCS and aperture like butter while your at it. Chop chop. Get to it. :)

Back on topic:
I haven't been able to find an Apple store with the 2.8 octo in my area (Bay Are, CA) and I was wondering if any of you guys in my area got your deal and noticed a few more laying around? Any help would be appreciated.

Call out of state. I know Tulsa OK has one in the woodlands mall. they will ship to you for cheap. I have heard of some shipping being comped but whenever I called they quoted me $12. that wasn't a big deal whatsoever.

I put a 3870 in mine and 16GB of RAM. Also added 3-1TB WD blacks to the internals and an eSATA card that supports hot swapping. Links are to where I got everything.
