What If I don't want a gift card. Maybe apply credit to my purchase ? Not a deal. No apple greedy

Well, I was sitting here with a $1000 gift card, tried to buy something and can't. On their "special" promotion where you get a gift card back you can't use a gift card for (even part of) the purchase.

Oh well Apple, less $ for you!

Being pedantic: these are not product discounts, they are additional vouchers for other products. The net result is more value for your money, but it is not a discount.

This is obviously a sales tactic to get people to buy more stuff. It worked well for me as I was buying several things anyway and used the ipad air 75$ gift card on an iphone. But If you want just one thing only and nothing else then you are probably better off at Best Buy or another 3rd party reseller offering discounts.

What I found interesting is that the gift cards discounts had absolutely zero advertising at the Apple Store and as far as I could see none of the Apple sales people were volunteering information about them. If customers specifically asked about special Thanksgiving deals then they were told about the gift cards but if not then not. There were no signs about them either. I wonder if it was like this in Apple Stores in US.

Have you called customer service to additional help? If Apple refuses to honor it's own gift cards there is no reason for anyone to give gift cards as a gift.

Sorry that happened to you. Hope someone at Apple can adjust. Clearly a gift card for $1000 was not a promo from Apple. Makes no sense.

I think bhphoto has the same price so it comes down to what state you are in, and if they have to charge sales tax.

Buy some shares of AAPL instead. Or donate some money to a local charity.

Mindlessly buying expensive gadgets for no specific purpose is a bit wasteful, no? Anyhow, it's up to you to figure out what to do with your dollars.

Good luck.

I have no idea what you are doing here.

Actually I got them on chat while online in checkout, and followed up by phone. Both stated that that's the "policy". I guess a gift card isn't a gift card when they don't want it to be?

And you're right, we're not talking about a freebie code, we're talking about a bought physical gift card with the scratch-off PIN and everything. Wife is livid (and wants to take it and the receipt back to the store for a refund)

I ended up getting the 32 Gb Air from macmall rather than BH. BH was $20 cheaper ($60 off rather than $40 off, both no tax for me) but macmall had free overnight shipping whereas BH was listing it as not currently in stock AND free shipping is freaking UPS ground, the slowest method ever. So it would have taken weeks to get it. Other Airs were listed as in stock, though.

Rain Check

I bought an iMac last week. I brought in my receipt to the Apple Store and they immediately issued me a $150 gift card.

Holding off and savings!

Holding off till late June 2014, just saved over 3000 dollars yesterday, yeah debt free black Friday!

100 euros off isn't too bad.

Just sold my 2009 iMac and ordered a new 27' iMac. :)

I wonder how much in extra sales Apple gets for Black Friday.

I tried to buy two $100 gift cards from Best Buy for $85 each, but it had a limit of 1 per customer. I was going to try and buy Logic Pro X from the app store and save $30. I'm hoping there is another sale on gift cards on Cyber Monday. Last year I think Best Buy and Office Max had $50 for $40, which would be even better.

Sorry it worked out that way. I agree with your wife on returning the gift card to the store. That's a terrible policy. I wonder if someone at Apple is considering the gift card a previous purchase?

I hope you get a resolution to this issue. Please post back with your progress.

Definitely better if you live in California. Sales tax on a MacBook Pro is killer.
$120 in sales tax isn't a killer (on base retina), seems reasonable to me although this is coming from the UK which has taxes of £184 where even with CA sales tax the MBP is £250 (approx.) cheaper

I'll never understand why you guys seem to think that a little bit of sales tax is over doing it and in this case a "killer" :p
