Cool dude, nothing is perfect. Understand tolerance and you will understand...take the number of defects and take the number made. I guarantee it is MUCH MUCH smaller than you have any idea. You will never understand because you expect everything to be perfect and because your $.50 flashlight doesnt scratch then your $600 iphone shouldnt scratch either. Get the hell over yourself. When you are ready to pay for something perfect, you will get something perfect. And no $600 for the phone does not guarantee perfect, the price would double if you expected Apple to personally inspect every phone before it left to guarantee not even a spec of dirty air got into the package. Take some keys to your indestructible flash lights and tell me they dont scratch.

Also..how many things do you buy that come from FOXCONN that dont arrive scratched? Last time I checked, FOXCONN does not make everything nor package everything in the world and is probably why *EVERYTHING* else you buy doesnt arrive with your perception of damage. Also how many other products do you buy are under such a time line as an iPhone at launch?? Who knows when they actually began productions but as of last known numbers, they had to have 4 million...*4,000,000* and I guarantee you Apple had a specific number they wanted ready by said time and no it was not Thursday the 20th...you cant forget all the logistics.

But im done, I could explain this to you all day...you will never understand. You dont pay the price to get something perfect. Why dont you go buy an Android and become a fandroid...seems like you would fit right in. No I am not an Apple Fanboy, just tired of every launch there being a new *gate* problem. Everyone wanted a bigger screen now all you see is memes showing a 10 story high iphone. Cant please anyone.

"iPhone 5 is made with a level of precision you’d expect from a finely crafted watch — not a smartphone. Never before has this degree of fit and finish been applied to a phone"

http://www.apple.com/iphone/design/

I'm done trying to explain it to you.

For those people who actually believe this story and pic are not fabricated? Yeah.....that girl you are chatting with really is a 21 y/o hard-bodied cheerleader that models for Victoria's Secret. :)

For the real scoop, go to YouTube and watch one of the multitude of scratch tests that show how durable and scratch resistant the back of the new iP5 actually is.

.....and for you people that actually believe this kind of stuff and bought a white phone instead? Thanks! Leaves more black phones for the rest of us.

After the original announcement of the iPhone 5, one early concern amongst readers was how well the anodized aluminum back and edges of the black iPhone 5 would hold up over time.

One lengthy thread on our forums has been actively discussing the potential issue and Pocket-Lint in their review did note some wear around the edges after some early usage. One person on another forum got straight to the matter and took keys and a SIM card tray pin to the back and edges of an in-store iPhone 5 unit with these results.

Of course, purposefully scratching a device is a bit extreme, but daily usage of any phone will generate some wear and tear. This may be a concern if you are particularly sensitive to the issue.

for god sake, buff those in your fingers and they will get erased

TFF!!!:D

So you are basically calling me a liar. Thanks.

You believe some things on the internet like youtube videos but not this. Okay. Do you believe the coatings that make your phone waterproof? They show videos of putting a "treated" phone in a glass of water and it still works. Wow. That must be true.

Why would I fabricate my pic??? I guess if it doesn't happen to you these things never happen.

You make me laugh skinny legs (or whoever you really are).

That's the beauty of an Apple forum. Deny there is a problem or issue and ridicule those who have the problem. Remember, Apple is perfect, it's the consumer who has the issue. :D

I agree with this. Was super worried at first but after 2.5 days of using, taking it in and out of my pocket and all, no sign of wear yet. I think if you take good care of this phone, wear and tear will be kept to the minimum. On the other hand, if you put it in your pocket with keys or using it without care, obviously you'll get scratches.

I actually think keeping this phone in certain cases it will be more prone to scratches. For ex, cases that clip on the beveled edge, just imagine debris getting stuck, and the constant pressure and rubbing of case against edge will surely produce scratches. I kept my old iPhone 4 in one of those cases, took the case off and there were def scratches on the metal rim. Just something to keep in mind.

Here's an interesting video that Sneakyfox posted in the iPhone forum:

The anodizing seems durable to me. The main issue for some is getting one that isn't damaged out of the box. I think once those are replaced and the issues which caused them to be scratched and dented at the factory are resolved things will calm down and get better.

Mine arrived without markings and has held up well without a case. I keep it in my pocket and while at my computer it sits on a wooden desk. No marks yet. It's still too early to say but I feel there's hope for all.

Than's a good tip. I'm thinking the same thing, keep it in a back pocket or a pocket without coins, keys etc. Perhaps after this first batch it won't be common anyway.

I guess so.

I don't know. I do know nothing is perfect and I have no agenda.
I did get two new ipads with yellow and dark edges and the apple store replaced those from a different factory and those are perfect. (I have pics of those bad ones FYI)

I am just trying to help.
I really do believe that maybe some black phones are getting cleaned (hexane) better then others before being treated. Or maybe a treatment in one plant is lacking.

Who knows. Who really cares. They're only phones. Bad ones do exist and that's the truth. If you get a good one be happy don't bash people who spend a lot of money and get an inferior product.

That is all :)

Aside from some snarky responses I think how the phone wears is a reasonable concern. Wouldve like to see a different material used for the metal banding (maybe some metal-infused ultra-durable, colorfast ceramic). The anodized coating will wear away by the simple, repetitive action of rubbing against your fingers or clothing...or inside a case, over time.

I suspect the black iphone 5's will patina quite nicely and look pretty cool with usage.

That may be a valid reason to go naked with this model (maybe w a screen protector :) )

avoid scratching

I have camped out in front of the same ATT location for 6 years. From the first iphone until current, When the employee brings the box out, I STOP THEM! Tell them im going to be the one to break the cellophane , open the box and touch the phone BEFORE ANYONE OR ANYTHING HAPPENS!I have seen employees take the iphones out of the box and slide them on the counter, handle them a little roughly. when it comes to me, i plug my iphone in from the usb connecter and hold the phone the hold time. also the otterbox I put on immediately after i unbox my iPhone. I have never ran into the issues of scratching or even not opening my own iphone box and touching it before a careless employee does....
You can request this same type of method if you speak up! I have done it for 6 years. The store I goto here in Destin shows me much love. Every last employee knows me, even new employees know of me because of my loyalty of camping out 1.5 days before the iphone emerges.....

Same here. Ordered via apple.com. Black 32GB, gleaming chip to the side bezel right above the front camera. BRILLIANT.

same on my black 32 from AT&T. chip is in exact same spot, and I noticed it the moment I took it out of the box. don't feel like dealing with a crowded apple store to get it swapped, though. just an annoyance.

Update:

After spending 2hrs on the phone with Apple yesterday, I am being sent a new phone directly from China. Should have it Tues. Apple is doing right by me.

The black bank is holding up very well without a case. As stated above, you need to get a undamaged one out of the box.

+1

I personally don't mind if mine gets scratched up as long as I'm the one who does the damage... I don't need a pre-damaged phone. The black still looks extremely sexy.

I think that guy is a guy from Samsung. Those bastards lost the trial and now trying something like that :D

Please Apple , put some detector to the doors for samsung and android guys.

Another advice : Tell them thats they can have a free Iphone 5 at the back side of the store and beat the **** out of them.

Thanx . I am relieved right now :D

My black/slate phone was perfect out of the box. However, after 2 days of going in and out of my pocket (with nothing else, might I add), there are a couple of small sections of the chamfered edge that are silver instead of black. So, my thought is that there's definitely something going on.

That said, I'm not terribly bothered by it yet because the sections are small, but I can see getting irritated if it happens in more places along the edge.

Everything is susceptible to scratching. What is wrong with you? :apple:

Thanks for the sane report. Usually this initial hysteria is way over the top, there was similar insanity about iPhone 3G and iPhone 4 -- I've owned both and never used a case for either, and they held up fine. The Apple logo was scratched up on the 3G after 2 years and there are some microscopic scratches on the 4, but considering the alternative (bulky case), it was worth it. But you never know with Apple before you've owned the product, because some stuff they've done was so insanely scratch prone it's like they never did real world tests at all. I had the 1st gen iPod Nano and after a week of handling it very gently (only in pockets with nothing else in them, only in my apartment) it looked like a bunch of toddlers had used it for skating practice. It got scratched up from wiping it with a soft cloth. It got scratched up when you looked at it funny.

Other reports. Take them for what they are.

. iFixit warns that the iPhone 5 suffers from susceptibility to scuffing on the edge of the device, further validating that new iPhone 5 owners should buy an iPhone 5 case to protect their precious investment.

In fact, Taylor (from Phonedog) was unfortunate enough to receive a scratched unit right out of the box.
