ok.. above is the link to that PDF picture of the rainbow effect that you mention. that is not what mine looks like, BUT rather the darkness going from top to bottom in the middle of the rainbow effect on this picture is what i see. i can't see it from the angle that this picture is taken on mine. i see mine from a side angle. maybe if i wore polarized glasses i would see this rainbow. they are saying this is due to stress on the plastics/LCD display in their thread. good possibility that this is what mine is.

i am almost sold that this is what mine is and not necessarily a defective screen. i think it is a manufacturing issue with mine that seems to be consistent with many of them. great detective work everyone!! if my LCD goes dead tomorrow though, I'll be sure to let you and Best Buy know.

oh yeah...i'll still try to post a pic of mine if i can figure out how to do so. the picture i took was the same size as that PDF but was 100+kb. that pdf was 50kb. what am i doing wrong? is it all about resolution?

ok. i managed to get a picture of the screen and used graphic converter for the first time to manage what i could for the pic. don't laugh but it's *just* the screen. see if you can see the darkness down the middle.

Geez guys, Graphic Converter can be used to make images smaller. It comes with every Mac nowadays. Just make sure you remove the Resource Fork before you save the image. You have this option under Save File As.

Imagine having to buy Photoshop for such a simple task...

jackieo - direct sunlight would not be an issue because it has never sat in direct sunlight. this i know for sure...it's like i gave birth to the thing and it's my baby. or if you are saying it is only visible in direct sunlight that is not the case either.

Its normal. Sometimes my display shows a rainbow-ish streak, as if I smeared oil on a part of my iPod screen and light was passing through it. Its normal, and caused by heat. It goes away. Its not even the LCD screen that's the problem, but the plastic covering the LCD.

What's the point of having your iPod replaced if the model you get will show the same "problem", if you can even call it that? You're just going to whine and eventually they're going to cave and give you a new one, raising AppleCare prices and such.

um yeah...like i said, first time using graphic converter...thanks for the fork tip though. and, not going to call apple care because i bought it at best buy and i don't think i need to return it. thanks for your intense input but that's not an oil streak or a rainbow. here it is again with your fork tip...if you look close it's right in the middle with a black shade to it with a white-ish stripe down the middle..only seen from a side angle.

Okay, that's not really normal. It's not exactly broken, mind you, but if you can see streaks like that, it means that the magic liquid crystal soup between the glass plates isn't distributed evenly, because they are not parallel or one is warped or under pressure. There is a small chance, if the glass is under some kind of strain, that it could eventually crack. I'd ask for a replacement. That would be acceptable on a cheap calculator, but not an expensive toy like an iPod.

[edit: this is very much like the white spots problem seen on PowerBooks a year or so ago.]

macdude, you have this same type of thing? can you only see it from an angle or from straight on?

I see it from almost evry angle, inside it rarely comes up but outside it always comes up, its so bad i cant read it without covering it with my hand.

yuck. mine really isn't an issue...barely visible but i just happened to notice it one day. how long have you had it? take it back. you should definitely be able to see it outside.

i just realized that the picture i posted is looking at it through the clear Contour case. may have come out better with the case off.

i'll have to do it through best buy. i think they'll give me a hard time about it since it's barely visible. i've been going through so much BS with some other things lately that I don't even want to deal with it right now. i have time.. i bought the extended warranty on it.

i bought a $475 JVC miniDV cam from them (best buy) that went to the sh*tter and i have to deal with JVC and it's going to cost me $250 because I didn't buy the extended warranty. the thing has 10 hours of use on it and is completely non-functional.
