I agree, introduce the pre then suddenly apple acknowledges the phone is more than capable to do such things as MMS, video recording and other things RIM and lesser cell phones can currently do. But yet the jailbroken community seems to have figured out a few more things ahead of apple. Wonder what the JB community reported for their last quarter

LOL, Apple decided to start coding for 3.0 when the Pre was announced. I mean the thought that they would unveil a new OS in March like they did 2.0 in March of last year.

I don't like the brands I buy to ever be at the top, I like the constant software and hardware updates they release. I'd never have bought an original iPhone but with GPS and (hopefully) with a new camera in the next update I'll be getting one.
Competition is always good. I hope both Apple and RIM leapfrog over each other for some time to come.

3 of my friends have BlackBerry Curves.

2 on T-Mobile, 1 on AT&T (this one was provided by their job).

I had the original iPhone and now have the 3G. I'm still the only one! Sad but true.

I've tried to sway them over the years but they either don't want to switch to AT&T or really want/need a physical keyboard.

But they still go "wow" at all the cool Apps and stuff the iPhone can do.

Also of note: they are all Windows users and I'm the only Mac user! But this isn't a case of just buying the brands you know, because I am seriously contemplating switching to the Palm Pre and have never had a Palm or Sprint device. Maybe I'm just more geekier than them?

They also seem more than content with a smartphone that just kicks ass with calls, push e-mail, and texting. They have never been more addicted to stuff like facebook. When you combine the facebook BlackBerry app with instant push notifications it can be quite an addictive thing.

I really want a physical keyboard too, which may be why I'm lusting after the Palm Pre. It's like an iPhone with a keyboard and serious multi-tasking built in.

The sound quality on their BlackBerries kicks the living hell out of my iPhone by the way. The original iPhone had the weakest speakerphone ever and even the ear piece was weak. The 3G has a much louder speaker, but the sound quality is still garbage. I've placed calls on their BBs before and it had noticeable better sound quality.

(Just realized this post kind of came out as a stream of consciousness more than a well-worded response....apologies!)

TAKING out my @$$, taking it were?

Besides knowing what you were trying to type, not too many people, including yourself are doing the same thing.

You haven't posted $h!t that makes sense either.

As a matter of FACT, you never do. At least QCassidy has a record of adding to conversations and making sense. You just like to post stupid one liners.

Good luck with that, and let's keep it on topic.
Oh are your feelings hurt, next time get your facts straight before running your mouth, LOL.

Link with proof?

Again, never adding a thing.

And please don't pull up any 3.0 information.

Quickoffice just released their app to do that, get a clue.

**facepalm** sorry I don't have my Patrick Stewart photo on hand.

Get a clue about multiquote.... or copy and paste.

And how could you possible expect anyone to know about that obscure app when they don't own either an iPhone or iPod Touch?

Oh yeah, you just need to make yourself sound smart.... I get it now.

So instead of just mentioning the app, you gotta add all the garbage. Good for you.

I take it back QCassidy, I am wrong and I see why you ignore annoying posters.

Im still waiting for service fees to come down.
I dont mind paying Apple for the phone...this is a one time fee

Its the incredibly high price of service I pay over and over and over I wont do.

My razr works just fine for phone calls, my MBP does everything else

This is not surprising at all... The pool of customers from other carriers who are willing to switch to AT&T to get the iPhone is starting to dry up.

It was surprising the iPhone even reached #1 with just AT&T. Could you imagine how far ahead it would be in unit sales if it was available on all four major carriers like the 83xx Curve.

It's $99 that's why, many people unlike us here at MR look at price first before they look at the phone, that's why Apple needs to come out with an iPhone Lite for $99 with the same specs as the current 3g but thinner.

Apple looks at total profit rather than margin. At $99.00, Apple would sell a lot but their profit / phone would be much much lower. Apple has teams of marketing people crunching numbers and they always sell at a price point to maximize earnings. A $99.00 iPhone would be great for the cell providers and the consumer but not for Apple.

Compare realistically

Compare similar types of phone - such as touch-screen models.

Then compare those phones with the same features.

When ATT no longer is the sole carrier of the iPhone, maybe I would buy one. It has features that I and others I know really like and want. It is true that "the reason why Apple will eventually have to broaden the iPhone's availability beyond AT&T."

Verizon (MCI) has no better track record as a business in my estimation. Companies which are simply greedy don't need my business.

Just curious - how long have you been using an iphone? Because I've had one since the beginning, and I'm sooo much faster on its virtual keyboard than on my bb curve 8300. I admit I'm more accurate on the bb, but the iphone's auto-correct is so good that I end up having to manually correct only a tiny bit more often on the iphone than on the bb. And even with manual error correction factored in, my overall speed on the iphone is significantly better than on the bb.

I always hear people talking about how physical keyboards on blackberries (and the pre, whenever it comes out) are an advantage, but I just don't see it. Doesn't it make theoretical sense that it would be faster to simply touch a key (virtual) than press it (physical)? My real-world experience certainly bears that out.

I find I'm much faster as well. The auto-correct does get in the way sometimes, but I have to admit, I'm glad it's there. It's more of a help than a hindrance.

I agree about the touch keyboard, but there are times I'd like to have both. And there are times I'd love the Xt9 option on the iPod Touch or iPhone, as it is with HTC phones.

I recently got my fiancée an 8310 as an engagement gift. The iPhone doesn't work with her hearing aids and she really likes the keyboard better than the one on her iPod Touch anyhow. From what I've been able to tell it's a nice machine ... push Gmail (I'm using hosted Exchange on my iPhone and the two work basically the same), Mac sync, plenty of apps. It doesn't have 3G or WiFi (8320 was not in stock that day and there are mixed reports about the AT&T version of the Bold's hearing aid compatibility) but she mostly just uses it for email and voice.

Told ya

Been telling everyone for months now that soon enough, along would come a better flashier newer iCraphone for the kiddies, and Apple's Mattel strategy would start eating it.

Better get back to making cutting edge high-end workstations (with Blu-ray) for the grownups who have lotsa cash. If it's not too late already and you haven't lost all of 'em.

Or say hello to your new junkyard neighbor; Amiga. Amiga always was better than Mac until the end, but it didn't matter, and Apple "superiority" won't matter to a world where MS/PC won either, after Apple became solely an iCrap overpriced toy gadget manufacturer that was bested by even cheaper flashier foreign iCrap.

Remember: the youth market is where the quantity may be but only for a short while; the quality (money) lies elsewhere (business and pro content creators) and they're faithful unless brushed aside one too many times.

The number one rule in business: NEVER forget what your business IS.

Apple! You make computers. That depend on a cutting-edge cachet to command a premium price.

WTFU.

:apple:

Better ask for a seat on the baord. You seem to know something they don't. I suppose they could have made double that $29 billion with your strategy.

And tell them to stop that ridiculous non-computer iPod nonsense that has been losing them money year after year. I mean the iPod didn't change anything, right?

Apple's business is TECH. ALL OF IT. They are one of the very, very few that can manage several products in several areas - now, in 2009. They can do this because the same philosohy regarding the OS from device to device, the interface elements from device to device, the user experience from device to device, the quality and reliability from device to device, and thw look adnd feel from device to device is virtually the same. They are not separate entities. The iPhone is OS X is the iPod Touch is the Macbook Pro is the Shuffle is the Nano is OS X is the iPhone . . . etc.

All of this comes with total control of the product, right down to the hardware it's supposed to (and not supposed to) run on. When you put the user experience as the #1 priority in everything you do, you place yourself in a position to succeed.

Product/interface Homgeneity and a reputation for reliability means that Apple can enter virtually any tech market, shake it up, change it, and emerge as the Grade A player. Provided they handle their financial war-chest wisely. And so far so good on that point.

You want to talk lack of focus and branding confusion? Look no further than MS. They can't even get their core product (Windows) right. Well, maybe THIS time. Or maybe in the NEXT VERSION . . . which has been MS' mantra for years now.

The iPod and itunes also made Apple relevant in the tech world, Apple would be a completely different company if they just made Macs.

If it was the same specs as the current 3G phone, why would a different model be needed? Just slap some new name on it and sell it at $99. It would just be a cheaper model of the newer design.

I also don't think Apple would only cut off $100 if a lot of power is sucked out of it. An 8GB iPhone at $99 I can see. But if they take other stuff away, it'll be $49 or free. As was mentioned as some of us tried to point out the benefits of an iPhone "nano" (same exact thing as this rumored "lite" with more hatred toward it), $100 less for a phone is chicken feed compared to the extra $30/month you have to pay for an iPhone's data plan. Give people a $10/month option and the "lite" phone and you'll gain a ton of market share.

But Apple also doesn't care as much about market share as it does about profit. Apple is all about the good machines that make nice profits. Those Cuptertino dudes won't do some BOGO offer just to gain market share. They'll make an iPhone worth your money, which the 3G really is.

Rofl

Yeah, you're a business expert. Quick, Apple! Get this guy on the Board!

Not really anything to brag about by RIM, the Curve is on what, 3 networks? And it has more than one model for sale?

And I doubt anyone is buying a new 3G with the looming release of a new iPhone. Wait till Q3 RIM. Just wait.

iPhone sales will be even worse for second quarter, the haters will have a field day.
