It's called shooting 'flat' and it's a way to preserve as much image information as possible (no blacks are crushed, no highlights are blown out and no colors are over saturated) so that you have the most latitude possible when color grading the footage.

Lethal

I enjoy learning tidbits like this and I rarely do anything with video.

When are we going to hear some more about this camera. It is being released next month and there were more professional tests that were shot with the more run and gun stuff seen earlier in the year.

I would have expected for a few reviewers to have some copies or at least to have seen some "lit" footage!

Once bitten....

Uggh Im bitten by the BMCC bug ;)
At my disposal at work, RED MX and a few XDCAMs.
At home, GoPro Hero2.
My summer wish list besides meeting Kate Upton...is the BMCC (personal) ;)

Okay Ill settle for a damn TB to FW cable and Resolve 9 for now :p

With DaVinici being included, could you not use something like Adobe Speedgrade instead? Or is DaVinici the dogs danglies?

Dog's danglies.

Speedgrade isn't "there yet" since Adobe took it over. I'm sure it will get better, but with Resolve 9 just around the corner, it may not matter much.

Speedgrade sounds and looks great but Ive had too much time invested into Resolve :)
I use what works plus at work I have it running with the Avid Artist and a CUBIX loaded with a few Quadros.
We have CS6 all over the map here but our workflow doesnt include PPro.

You could very well use Speedgrade for your blackmagic footage. They just provide their software as bundle because of workflow working with DNxHD ready to work with resolve, but what is nice you also have the option of Proress which you will want to use for Speedgrade.

I've actually dipped into Speedgrade and it is a beautiful program. We used it to color the most recent music video I directed for broadcast.

As for why they've released hardly anything for test footage... It's because they've constantly been making little tweaks to the camera so they haven't wanted to show a full working example yet and then make even more improvements. I learned this from an interview with the founder of Blackmagic which came out just the other day on the front page of cinema5d.com.

Looking forward to this coming out and I'm thinking about getting my hands on one.

Not really. All you need is an SATA dock with eSATA or Firewire 800 interface, unless you want to use the software, that enables live previews and such.
Dont forget the HDSDI to HDMI converter from BM :)
Yep with this camera, my next two xmases are doomed :p
LOL!

And probably the festivities after that, when an update arrives, and such small and inexpensive camera can record in an even better format with much bigger lenses. You will be always screwed. Maybe have a look at the Bolex, or better yet, the VX1000 promises to be quite an hilarious piece of video technology. Though I'd wait for the 2000 model.

Or just get an SR3, which is quieter than some Epics on 43° C, when the magazine is properly loaded of course. And it looks less hideous than an DSLR, which the BCC is, in a way, with all its accessories connected to it to even make a usable camera out of it. Seriously.*

I recently shot with the D800, with PL mount adapter, AJA recorder, battery mounts, external display as VF and some other things attached to it. Even an SR3 does not look that fragile with compendium and big lens, and it seems to be not as heavy.

I have been looking. This is for personal use. Ive been using a GoPro for years now and before that an XL-1.
At work its XDCAM now RED.
The enticement with this camera is the 2.5k and Resolve 9 :)
I use that for work.

dynamic range - YES!

For run and gun outside stuff I seem to be always shooting here in CO I think the dynamic range is gonna be a huge help. Ever tried shooting clouds / severe weather - only a crazy person does that :) Either the landscape is black or the clouds / Tornado is blow out.

I could of used on this shoot. No amount of messing about in post helped really.

The dynamic range and low light abilities of my HMC40 suck.
