Oh for sure, let's do a remake of one of the greatest, most get-under-your-skin films of all time. Let's have Michael Bay direct while we're at it. And hey, let's remake Casablanca with Miley Cyrus and Ben Affleck starring too, instead of those squares from last-century. With a rocket-ship instead of an airplane at the end.

Oooooooooooo, Miley Cyrus, with Ben saying "here's look' at you kid!" at Rick's Galactic Cafe. A space ship only as long as its warp capable. You may be on to something... :)

As for a remake, I agree, nothing to gain and everything to lose. I see this as a move by the studios to try to wring more profits out at any expense.

It's not a remake, it's a sequel. The director is Denis Villeneuve, so it could be quite interesting. I'm not going to write it off just yet.

The only thing that makes me even remotely hopeful that this might end up being decent is that it's the same writer returning to the source material alongside Harrison Ford, dragging a decent director in tow. It's not an entirely crass cash-in, so there is a distinct, though somewhat distant possibility it could end up being decent.

You're right, poor choice in my verbiage. My conviction against a second movie given the actor's age is unmoved. I think its a lose/lose situation

But why the need to make a sequel in the first place? Why the need to resurrect movies that were outstanding classics in their day/at their time, and try to re-make them or make them over?

Are there no new stories to tell? Humans have been recording and telling stories for the best part of ten thousand years (if not orally for an awful lot longer).

Is Hollywood so seriously bankrupt of ideas, stories, and tales that it can only do remakes, and sequels of what were regarded - rightly - as movie masterpieces in their day?

From IMDB:

Ridley Scott has considered directing a sequel to this film at various times. Some sequel scripts were published as novels. While working on the Final Cut DVD in 2007, Scott again considered a follow-up detailing the lives of Rachel and Deckard after the events of the first film. Actress Sean Young expressed great interest in reprising her character. At the 2007 Comic-Con, Scott again announced that he is considering a sequel to the film, and by September 2008, Travis Wright was writing the screenplay, working in conjunction with John Glenn. According to Glenn, the script explores the nature of the Off-World colonies, and examines what happens to the Tyrell Corporation in the wake of its founder's death. As of March 2011, Broderick Johnson and Andrew A. Kosove of Alcon Entertainment are negotiating for the film, television and ancillary franchise rights from producer-director Bud Yorkin. Johnson and Kosove are wanting to serve as producers to a sequel and/or prequel.

Probably, but this isn't a new thing; particularly in this case, the idea of doing a sequel has been around for a long time.

Actually this is one thing that makes me think it could work, since it will necessarily have to be quite different. (Which is one reason Aliens is a great sequel, since it's not a rehash of the first movie, in fact it's not even the same genre. Which some people moan about, but they know nothing. ;) )

Still waiting on The Goonies and Bill & Ted sequel...

Be excellent to each other because Goonies never say die! :p

Harrison Ford is a great actor and has done played in some really great movies. I think though at his age, a reprisal of Deckard will be a mistake. Just look at how old he seemed in the last Indiana movie. .

Some people never lose it mate. Don't write him off just yet. Script + story will also be a big influence on the movie.

Haven't you noticed that Hollywood is running low on original ideas? We have a new Alien 3 movie that will ignore 4 + 5, a new Terminator movie that ignores all of the previous movies, Total Recall was redone, and so on.... now Blade Runner 2!!!!!

I feel the only shame is when a sequel doesn't live up to the quality or expectations of the original.

Starwars 7-9, Blade Runner 2, Alien 3, Terminator... it's going to be a sick year for film fans.

I miss the days of Goonies, Labyrinth, Ghost Busters, The Dark Crystal, Indy Jones. Was this Hollywood's golden years, now lost forever????

A sequel has been bandied about for many years, except now it's confirmed, and Ford is reprising his role. Shooting summer 2016.

Beat me to it (I'm late to this party).

You belie your age. As far as "Golden Years" the 1970's rate much higher in critical terms.

I'm not that enamored with Mr Ford as an elder actor. He did nothing for me in Ender's Game.

I think he does alright. I don't think Ender's Game was a good film, so it's a little harsh to judge his performance in it. My question is does he only get offered the rehash of older roles (Indy, SW, BR) or does he knock back other types of roles?
A similar aged actor I like is Morgan Freeman. I think he choses good films, often in a cameo role.

How could you possibly come to that conclusion? :)

My brain is Starwarscentric and works in a strange way!

Any Bill & Ted sequel nowadays would have to include a preface explaining what telephone booths are.:p

Perhaps, but prior history is littered with similar attempts that really didn't work.

Legend of Zelda for the Nietendo and Star Wars in 2015; and now I hear there's a sequel to Blade Runner in 2016?!?...and PBS is releasing a new season of Vicious this summer.

Wow! So much to to look forward to this year and the next!:)

Come on, don't leave me hanging. Give me your top 5.

There were so many crtically acclaimed films from that era:

Chinatown, Taxi Driver, The Godfather, One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest, Dog Day Afternoon, The Exorcist, Serpico, The French Connection, M*A*S*H, Barry Lyndon...the list goes on.

At least Star Wars was conceived as a series almost from the start, although it's unclear how many parts there would be based on statements from George Lucas and others over the years. I'm also not ready to write off another Blade Runner movie that isn't a remake. A few years ago, I was concerned about the Star Trek reboot, but I was pleasantly surprised, despite the liberties that the filmmakers took with the ST universe.

Blade Runner was set in 2019, 37 years from its release. If the sequel picks up at around the same time, that'll only be about two years from a likely release in 2017. It'll be interesting to see how that is dealt with.

2019? Wow they got our future totally wrong didn't they?

I've just watched the Star Trek rebot (not for the first time). It's a good movie, and it was sad to see Leonard Nimoy given last weeks events. But he will always be the real Spock to me, no matter how many new movies they make.

It's always fun to see how accurately movies portray the future. Back to the Future II actually did fairly well, except for the flying cars. (It was set in 2015.) Unless things go really badly over the next few years, Blade Runner will have been far off the mark (but no less enjoyable).

I was very sad to hear about Leonard Nimoy's passing. However, I think that Zachary Quinto has been excellent as the younger Spock, and at least he and Leonard Nimoy got to do a commercial together. (Google "Spock Audi" and you'll find it if you haven't already seen it.)

2001: A Space Odyssey was off the mark as well, but, it's still a classic.
