I really can't comprehend what they gain by competing with Beats. They apparently think it's important to do so, but from an investor standpoint, I don't see what is gained.

Yeah, I’m gonna go ahead and just knock ‘beats’ here for a second. I considered the Solo three wireless, and even though the sound wasn’t really negatively reviewed, the hardware was. One thing that seems to be a problem with the ‘beats brand’, is the poor hardware/longevity doesn’t seem to uphold given the price point they are charging. Even though I think beats is a massive cache for Apple, it’s also junk hardware across their entire lineup that seems to not last nearly as long as it should.
Powerbeats 3 replaced once by manufacturer, now held together by glue in 2 different places. The quality is not impressive.

The juxtaposition of the concept art here and the blurb from Bloomberg (say that three times fast) is confusing. “Retro look”—those look like my 280s stripped of any color except white. Nothing about Apple’s design language is retro, unless the general public is really at a point where Sennheiser headphones in general look “retro.” Retro relative to Beats maybe?

I've had the same pair of Beats Studio3 Wireless for two years now and the battery life is still rock solid. Not sure what these could offer that would make me want to switch over. This is the second product I've said that about today, am I... evolving?

Not too many wireless headphones have this, let alone Apple.

The last pair I had that had a battery designed to replace was an older Sennheiser. The M2 battery can be replaced as well but it is not designed to be user replaceable; unlike the older one where S sold spare batteries.

My Bose 700's appear to not have a replaceable battery.

I wonder how good the noise cancelling, if they have it will work? The 700's are the best at NC I've had.

retro design sounds interesting and is bringing up Porta Pro images in my mind.

still likely a day 1 buy for me

Sounds great, except I’m not buying another apple audio product until they make my Air Pod Pro’s work as well as they did on launch day.

According to the report, Apple is working on at least two versions of the headphones, including a "premium version with leather-like fabrics"
I hope the real version is not leather like but real leather... I mean... seriously... 350$ and they can't afford real leather?

Also, I'd like a replaceable battery on those please... I use my premium headphones for 10 years+.
I certainly would not invest any money in headphones that have non-replaceable earcushions that fall apart after 2 years or that have a battery that is embedded in a way that I have to destroy the thing to replace them.
Also, on a premium wireless headphones, AptX and an embedded player is not optional (e.g. Bose has a Spotify client directly on the headphones).

I hope they understand that the high-end market often uses high-end playing devices ( and headphone amplifiers, etc) for listening to non-compressed music, and therefore a wired connection is required in addition to wireless.
Unless « high-end » simply means the same people that enjoy iPhone earbuds but need to buy everything Apple.

I'd be surprised if Apple's "high end" means "that" high end. After all, they have yet to build in something as simple as a customizable EQ option for their playback devices. Let's see … Deep, Late Night, or Jazz? Hard to decide! ;)

Streamline the teams working on head/ear phones, create more lock in to the Apple ecosystem, continue to increase your own (Apple) brand power with headphone consumers.

Will it be like the Mac Pro, you can replace over-ear to on-ear for $300?

Doubt these will be able to compete with my Bose 700s- Have a feeling these will just be repackaged Beats.. maybe ill be wrong?

Aslso segment market to high end (Apple brand) and mid range (Beats); appealing to different market segments.

what are the odds they achieved some zero (or near zero) latency magic with these that would enable usage in pro audio/recording environments (i.e. a new version of Logic)?

feel like that's not technically possible now but maybe with a next gen Wx chip, new mac hardware and new version of Logic?

I don't see why the makers over over/on ear headphones can't have replaceable batteries. I'm sure it could be done. I can maybe see some justification for sealed batteries on tiny in-ear devices, but I'm sure for these bigger headphones it could be done. Spending hundreds of dollars for something that'll only be usable for a few years and then essentially become a throw away item because of the battery is ridiculous.
Oh, I guess I know the answer - $$$.

That article links to a source written in 2018 which says “Bluetooth 5.0, which has already been announced, offers much higher bandwidth. This should let future Bluetooth headsets play back audio at high quality while the microphone is being used, in theory.”
I don’t know if it does make a difference, but hopefully Bluetooth 5 is more capable.

I reserve my doubts, and I guess that's also why the author said "in theory". There are people that have BT5 capable headphones with mics, and the mic quality still is not good according to the reviews.

It's why right now I am only looking at headphones that come with dongles for the mics for work. As far as gaming headsets are concerned, many of my coworkers like the Hyperx Cloud (i forgot which one has the dongle). I'm personally holding out to see what people say about the Jabra Evolve2 line.

To be honest, I much prefer passive noise canceling over active. The reason is you won't introduce other artificial params into the sound. There's a noticeable difference with NC on vs without. Again, it's all personal preference though. I got some Mr Speakers cans that are excellent with passive noise canceling, but they are too big to travel with.

I think that's unlikely. The nature of wireless will have some latency. I don't think many pro-recording engineers will want to tune to Apple headphones since they are not neutral by nature and lack detail compared to their competitors in this space.

therefore a wired connection is required in addition to wireless.
I’d like a USB connector on the phones for charging AND delivery of digital audio. The cable could be USB-C/USB-C or USB-C/Lightning.
The amount of people I see faffing with touch controls to pause music in the office is ridiculous!
Ok?
unless you want to spend even more money with apple
There are LITERALLY threads and threads of people upset because Apple’s not making a thing for them to spend more money on. They want an iMac that looks different, a Mac almost-Pro, and a replacement for a 2018 iPad Pro just because they need something to buy :) (oh, and wireless access points... again) There’s power behind that logo!

Beats are their agnostic brand... they still use the tiny USB connectors for charging. Apple wouldn’t be competing, they could make a device that, say, has an amp that assumes a digital stream that is going to be coming from some compliant Apple device. Sure, it wouldn’t work with the Android and Windows devices that haven’t quite yet figured out what they want to do to replace the wired headphone jack, but as there’s literally billions of Apple devices out there, it’s a market that could be tapped.
They are basically killing beats
I don’t think so. It’s the market leader without even trying hard. Then again, Apple has done some... interesting things before :)

Honestly if these sound as incredible as I would like the to sound they could charge more and Id be happy if it was worth it. Airpods Pro are awesome and they are not the pinnacle of sound quality in terms of the entire spectrum of what's available in all kinds of headphones. If Apple really comes through on drivers and comfort, and like others have said, figured out how to make the signal robust, these could be huge.
They could make the signal robust, but that would require putting the jack back into the iPhone

I would definitely buy these!

The noise cancellation on the AirPods Pro works good but over the ear would be much better

If these are released in the fall I'm sure they would sell a ton of these over Christmas time

I’m still cautious as it stands.MacRumors doesn’t like mentioning Sony when competing with Apple for some reason.

I’ve stated this before, for these Apple OTE headphones time really compete, it has to be better than either theBeats Studio3 and Bose 700, it has to be equal to the Sony WH-1000XM3’s which have been reared numerous times over all measures better than each. Furthermore Sony is preparing the XM4’s for mid summer this year and heavily rumoured to support multiple Bluetooth connections/pairings as well as much improved and needed stereo microphone support.
