Bloomberg: Apple Working on 'Thinner and Lighter' High-End MacBook Air With MagSafe, Could Launch in Second Half of 2021

Oh, a thinner Macbook?? Must be a lot of customers asking for such a feature…

Where's the end to this? A single layer of gold or a buckminsterfullerene type sheet with see-thru features like in the Expanse? What does Guo Mingzhi predict?
Compared to the old 12” MacBook, the current MacBook Air is considerably larger. I’d like a thinner and lighter MacBook Air.

This is disgusting. I just bought an M1 and now Apple is going to make me upgrade again in less than a year? Apple should have sent out an email letting prospective buyers know ahead of time.

Now that I think about it, this M1 has been acting sluggish lately. If this M1 can’t handle watching cat videos on YouTube, what good is it?

This M1 isn’t even the pro model. How can I be expected to work on a standard M1? It doesn’t come with a GPU, Face ID, or a case of beer, not to mention the base model should come with no less than 16GB RAM and 512 SSD. I feel like Apple ripped me off. This M1 is worthless now.

Apple has really been letting us down on the hardware lately, especially with the M1. Every time you turn it on and or connect it to an external monitor it dies.

I see this new M Air will be thinner and lighter. The memory of Ives lives on. Apple is showing so much courage with this new Air. There is no innovation with Apple anymore. If Steve was still alive....

I just saw a video on YouTube saying how bad this new upcoming model is not worth it and the new Forbes article agrees.

Where is the best place to sell my M1? It looks like I will be upgrading to the new Air when it is released.

I am looking forward to the new and improved M MacBook Air. :D
This probably sums up most comments about the new Mac. The thing is all these people who ran out to buy the low end MacBooks are going to be trying to sell them when the new ones comes out. I don’t know how many times I’ve posted to people the two M1 MacBooks out now are low end base models but still people want to buy them to replace their high end Intel MacBooks.

The air is 2.8lbs (1.29kg). Yet people think that is heavy? If something around 3lbs is to heavy you may other issues to worry about.
 People said the same about 4 lb notebooks when the 3 lb Air debuted 13 years ago.

The current MacBook Air is 40% heavier than the 12” MacBook Apple sold from 2015-2018.

I honestly wonder what percentage of time the average Mac is used on a desk or table - 90%?

I just don't get the thinner and lighter thing at this stage. Diminishing returns and all that...
By the time it is released, hopefully we’re back to traveling again. The 12” MacBook was perfect for an airplane tray table.

Am I the only one who doesn't want the return of MagSafe on the Mac? I don't want another proprietary connector. I am enjoying most of my devices using the same cable, USB-C. Unless Apple would still allow charging through one of the USB-C ports, I guess.

It would be nice to see a more modern design for the Air come out. I’m sure Apple could trim a bit of thickness out of it, given the thermal efficiency of the M1, but I certainly wouldn’t want them to then cut the battery life due to having to shrink the battery.

I think M1 buyers today are going to quickly realize that the phenomenal battery life is something they won’t be able to live without going forward, especially as we go back to a more mobile life. This efficiency is at least as important as the power of the M1, imho.

Well, they are redesigning every Mac so this rumor is not surprising.

I'd consider if there was a 15" model.

Yep. If Apple can create a proprietary MagSafe system that works on all their devices, that might be a different story. But this supposed need for magnetic charging, at least with devices like the new M1 MBA and MBP, is less of a benefit given the long battery life. Back in the day when MagSafe meant your MBP or MBA was safe from getting pulled off a table as you were sitting at Starbucks charging (because you had to charge to keep the laptop going), it made sense.

But now there is far less need to keep any of the M1 Macs plugged in AND with USB-C the charging rate is much higher than Qi is (and more efficient), so you’re still better off just plugging in to get a boost when needed, vs the slower and more heat generating ”wireless” Qi charging offers.

And this is why I always say, I'll never buy a first gen product.. because the 2nd gen is always better.

No company on the planet is going to say, "Whoa, before you buy my brand new product, there's going to be a better version in 6 months or a year". That's just silly.

He was making a joke.

That is, BY FAR, my most wanted mac. A 15/16" air with a good HDR screen. I use it for content consumption, and not creating. I don't need all of the power of a Pro, but I do want the best screen I can get, and a processor that can handle 4K60 video without stuttering, or fans blaring.

16 Inch pro with M2 or whatever would be tempting but will cost too much for me

An issue with bringing back a 12" model is the footprint can't go smaller because of the need to fit a full size keyboard, but that leaves a huge bezel (of wasted space) around the display. By the time you scale the display up to fill the top panel, you're almost at 13" anyway. So maybe not 13.3" but a 12.8-13.0" panel in something very like the MacBook's chassis is closer to the ideal. Then offering a 13" and 14.1" is probably too close to give each a proper, differentiated use case, so you come back round to the 13 and 15 inch options.

I did some calculation, if the Macbook 2016 was the smallest size Macbook they are ever going to make due to the size of the keyboard, the hypothetical Screen Size with "Zero" Bezel on the "side" at same 16:10 Aspect Ratio would be exactly 13". Which is actually possible with both LCD and OLED with enough space on top and bottom bezel.

Interesting now we are back to square one. Although LCD has become cheap enough so not sharing display panel cutting size and PPI shouldn't be much of a problem.

I wouldn't mind a 15" MacBook Air to be frankly honest. But I just thought the lineup of 14/16 and 13/15 on MacBook Pro and Air is very unApple. Or may be the new Apple is different.

I guess they are waiting for OLED for that. Which could shave another ~100g off. And any more weight reduction will be trade off between Performance and Battery.

Hopefully they drop the "Air" for these 13 / 15" and simply call it Macbook.

And use the "Air" instead of a 12", sub 2lb Laptop.

Yeah, that's actually probably what I'll end up getting, but I'll spend more for it than what I need. I have a 2014 15" rMBP, and it's been awesome. Since it's no problem getting 6-7 years out of a Macbook with a great experience, I don't have too much of an issue going big. Still, I really don't need any crazy performance.

This will be the successor to the MacBook 12 inch, I wouldn't have expected that at all. I have already thrown €1 into my piggy bank:)
Apple should not get the idea of making the new MacBook Air out of plastic. The Surface Book 12.5 from Windows looks totally cheap and ugly with the plastic they used.
If it's the usual Apple quality, I'll definitely buy it!
