Many people prefer to use their phones without cases and with the protruding camera the phone no longer lays flat on any surface (I know some reputable online reviewers mention that they liked non-protruding so they can use the phone while it's laying flat on a desk without it rocking side to side).
I can't remember the last time I saw anybody using an iPhone without a case on it. I think your definition of "many" may be askew.

That said, "my phone is too thick" stopped being a complaint (outside of Apple headquarters) about the time the original iPhone came out - I wish they'd stop trying to solve that non-problem.

I still don't know why this bothers people so much. I'd rather have the protruding camera than have the entire phone that thick just to hide it. It isn't optimal, but I've never seen it as something to be upset about.

Option 3: Make it flush, and use the extra thickness for, I don't know, maybe a n extra big-ass battery?

This "8" has had so many rumors and changes. Full wrap OLED display with glass back, now not a full wrap display. Integrated fingerprint, now not (hope they do not go with eye scanners, hate having to take off sunglasses outside to unlock phone). Wireless charging now/maybe not, Lighting to USB charging (thanks for another dongle to carry around). What is happening to Apple? They used to be the bleeding edge, now it's more like catch-up! I've not seen anything to make me want to spend $1,000+ for a phone. I'll wait a couple of cycles and all of the wish list for the 8 will be a standard feature set on future iPhones at an affordable price. I love my current Apple products (6S, Late 2013 MacBook Pro and 9.4 iPad Pro). The new MacBook Pro has issues with the not so useful OLED function bar now Apple is having issues getting the next level phone feature set down and functional. Really hope they don't push a feature set that will have issues (a la OLED function bar on the MacBook Pro). Really sorry to see Apple playing catch-up and not leading the way as they used to. Will someone at Apple please start channeling Steve Jobs?

The protruding camera is super annoying, but not annoying enough to make me switch to Android.

If they brought out 2 models of this : model A like the render, with camera bump, and model B that is 2mm thicker, camera is flush, and 30% more battery life..
..I wonder how many of those saying they don't mind the camera bump would stick to model A?
None, I would guess! ;)

Model B would sell out, and model A would sit quietly untouched on the store shelves..

Google and Samsung made a smartphone with a flat camera, and they are great as well. So why not Apple? Also with a flat Camera the orientation doesn't really matter anymore. If they have to make the smartphone 1mm thicker, so what? In daily use you won't be able to notice it, but you get a slightly better battery life.

It's because the internet is an echo chamber. In the real world no one is really bothered by it. I doubt most iPhone users have even considered it.
You're probably correct about most users. But please don't assume most means everyone. I personally hate the bump. I'll stick with my SE until Apple makes a bumpless new phone or the SE gets so absolutely old that it's just non-functional. I would without question rather have whatever camera quality fits without the bump than an even better camera with the bump. Because you know what? Just like most users probably don't care about the bump, I bet that same general populace can't tell the difference between those cameras either.

It looks pretty, but I hope they move the power button to, well, anywhere other that directly across from the volume buttons. It's wonderfully symmetrical design, sure, but two years on, and I still occasionally line up a great one-chance-to-capture-it photo opportunity, and... turn off the display, locking the phone (because I pressed the wrong side - which is either the top or bottom depending on which way I've happened to rotate the phone to reach landscape mode - or squeezed the phone between thumb and finger and the power button "won" over the volume button). And by the time I can get the phone back on and unlocked and the scene reframed, the child or cat or whatever has wandered off or stopped having that expression and I've lost that photo opportunity. This was clearly a case of form winning out over function and usability.

This won't be a popular request, but I'd also love to see them add a play/pause button between the volume up/down, in line with what the iPods have. There are numerous times that I have the phone in my hand, and I'm listening to music or a podcast as well as using some app, and I have a sudden need to have the phone stop making noise right now. Someone asks a question or something. And suddenly it's a mad scramble to pull up the control panel and swipe to the music tab and then press pause. That seems like such a poor hack. If they want me to consider it as a music player (that was, after all, one of Steve's original three pillars of the iPhone), being able to directly pause the music is a pretty basic expectation. It'd be a boon for AirPods users as well.

This. All I care about is a super good camera. I don't care if it protrudes or not.

It's because the internet is an echo chamber. In the real world no one is really bothered by it. I doubt most iPhone users have even considered it.

I think the protruding camera is a serious design flaw, one made simply so Apple can tout some misleading thinness numbers. Misleading in that something is only as thin as its thickest part.

However, that being said, I've gotten used to it. I don't use a case, so I always feel like the lens is getting scratched when sitting on a table/desk. But it's not a dealbreaker for me should the new phone have it as well. I'd much prefer a revamped iOS in order to keep me an iPhone customer.

Put your phone on a desk and type on it. It wobbles with every touch. That bothers me.

That's your use case. Some people have cases, some pick it up, some have it on a dock at their desk, some use their Mac to reply to messages.

I would rather have it be thinner/lighter and then have the option of making it thicker with a normal case or battery case.

I would rather have a not-so thin phone with a decent battery that I can lay flat and use properly.

Despite what naysayers say, battery tests show the 7+ being a top performer.

Can you sense it? Apple is probably scrambling to make all models of the new iPhone actually worth buying compared to the one "iPhone Edition" model that would have been the only thing comparable to the S8. Good job Samsung in putting pressure on Apple to innovate and make better products available this Fall to Apple consumers, hopefully at a more reasonable price point.

If the iPhone 7 were to release today, I would still buy it. That's how satisfied I am with the device. Over the 6 months or so of owning it, I haven't had to fuss with it at all.

Yup the protruding camera bothered me for like 5 seconds and I quickly got over it, love the thinness of my phone. People will complain about the protruding camera but will put their phones in ghastly looking bulky cases.

Yeah but with all due respect one person, you, cant speak for the entire mobile market and what people want which is a relatively bezel-less front, some form of wireless and/or fast charging, to see more affordable accessory options for the courage that came with lack of headphone jack, etc.

I quite like my 7 Plus as well, and Have solo3 and AirPods to accommodate, but I'm not all people,
And I understand the criticisms of a $900 phone, too. Even though Samsung isn't really cutting anyone any breaks either.

At the very least, seems most people want trimmed bezels. Or a less crazy form factor, I've had 6plus 6s plus and 7plus and still going big but sometimes it is unwieldy.

The iPhone 4 was an instant success. The curves being subdued compared to the Samsung Edge is better for use. If this rumor pans out Apple will likely sell more than 5 of these things. Pardon my sarcasm Apple will do very well if they have some of the charging capabilities and this form factor. Add a Cobalt blue only for the high end model to get people that purchase based upon color in on the mix.

Where did I say I'm speaking for the entire market? Oh you like your 7+? Interesting.

I'm saying you can like your phone as do I as do many people, but there are certain things about Apple's iPhone that are long in the tooth needing upgrades,

That's all. You replied to someone who stated S8 + Samsung is keeping Apple on their toes, and you said you like your iPhone and it hasn't been fussy for 6 months as some sort of counter argument. The fact remains that S8 is a nice design.

For example, this year, after 10 years, will be the first to incorporate an OLED display. They are getting with the times, just not at Android speeds (and with all the variety Android has to offer)

Wasn't this already reported last week? Bloomberg is slow and re-purposing other news
This seems like an independent report straight from the horse's (Apple's) mouth. Probably pushed through by Apple PR, with the intent to communicate this to a broader audience than the standard tech followers like us.

if this is an argument to show that people actually do care about the camera bump even though they say otherwise, it's flawed.

I really don't care about the camera bump, because I always use one of Apple's cases (the phone is too slippery otherwise), but "the phone is thinner" stopped being useful to me once they got to perhaps 8mm. It just hasn't been a benefit to me since then, and the increased fragility of the phone is a major downside. Until they get to a phone so thin and flexible that you can literally roll it up, increased thinness is pointless. Now, more battery life I'd jump at. But I'd be buying that thicker phone because of the increased battery life, not because it lays flat without a case.

Oh great, now I'm gonna have nightmares tonight! Gee, thanks.
