On three different MacBook Pros? And an iPad Pro? I take quite good care of my gear since I even had a jet black iPhone 7 for a year without a case and not a scratch to be seen. No, USB-C ports are just really fragile. I’ve not dropped or done anything bad with my iPad Pro at all, but the cable is now starting to dangle at an angle, purely from sitting in the connector. It’s simply a poor physical design.
I have the M1 MBP and I am very mobile, in the sense that I make movies so I am at different locations. I move all the time and so pack and unpack all my gear all the time. I use the M1 MBP charger and cable to charge the MBP, my son's two laptops, My Galaxy s20 FE, and his iPad air when at home. I have to carry the Lightning cable for my Air Pods Pro. I have not broken any of the cables (both lightning and USB-C). However, my USB-C cable sees a lot more use across devices, and has not failed me at all. So, yes, the USB-C cable is robust. None of my cables, or the cables of people around me, have failed even once.

It is a matter of opinion. It's true that there might be regulation unwarranted which has a negative impact, but it's also true that regulation can achieve a positive impact.
Dontchaknow? Anyone and anything against Apple is negative….

USB-C is an inferior physical design with a male tongue in the middle of the port. Male portions of a connector will always be more prone to breaking than female connectors. Lightning has it right with the fragile portion in the cable rather than in the connector. Over the years, I’ve had at least 10 USB-C ports go bad because the cable won’t stay in the connector anymore. I’ve never had a Lightning port go bad, though I’ve had to replace several Lightning cables. After paying $900 for motherboard replacements due to bad USB-C connectors, I’ve severely soured on this very poorly designed connector. I’d much rather pay for a new Lightning cable than a new USB-C port.

On top of that, on my 1-year old iPad Pro 12.9” 2021, the port is already starting to loosen with the USB-C cable starting to dangle lower and lower. I don’t do anything with that port except charge. Feature-wise, USB-C has it all over Lightning, but physically, Lightning is superior.

I wish they’d come up with a new connector with the reliability of a Lightning connector and the feature set of USB-C/Thunderbolt.
It’s funny most people don’t have those issues, it seems the Apple crowd has so many issues with non-Apple, just seems so….mysterious ?

I think Lightning is the superior design as I've never had a port break unlike USB C...... but I never use the port anyways with wireless charging, so I don't care either way.

I buy iPhones only every 4 years. I am perfectly happy with my iPhone 11 Pro Max. May be the iPhone 15 would be usb C but that would also mean new cables for me since both my wife’s and my $45k+ vehicles from 2022 still came with only wired CarPlay and USB-A ports. Yikes.

Actually my daughter’s Lenovo Carbon laptop would not charge any longer on the charging port that happens to be USB-c. Luckily I tried it on another usb-c port and it seems to charge. Phew. USB-c does seem to be fragile on the port side. Cable looks fine.

My 22 Corolla LE has a single USB-C in the center console.

This should have happened years ago. And it should happen because USB-C is fundamentally better than lightning — more reliable, faster charging, interoperable. It shouldn’t require, or be based upon, government regulation to get this done.
Without regulations a free market will not provide what is right, it will provide what is the most profitable. Regulation is definitely needed for some things, and the way phones and now only two companies are ingrained in every single persons lives means that I can only see more and more regulation coming for both Apple and Google.

They'll release a USB-C version for Europe and the rest lightning...they don't want to lose all that product revenue when they don't have to. Private companies...gotta love em.

My kids aren't generally gentle with their electronics. From their Nintendo switch to their xbox controllers, they use USBC for all of them. One switch gets docked dozens of times a week I would say, and it's the launch day unit. No issues. Meanwhile, a lightning cables lasts me... 12-18 months (I don't actually know anymore, I use Qi as often as I can because I got tired of replacement cable)? Anecdotal, I know.

That is some good data. USB-C ports just don't look durable to me. It is possible they hold up better than Lighting I suppose. I have yet to put any hard miles on one but we will see.

If Apple have designed the USB-C connector to be the same method as the lightening connector which is on a flex cable, what's the betting that the student engineer that desiged the USB-C flex for the 'worlds first USB-C' iphone will sue Apple for copying his idea.

OR

Do you think Apple has paid him for his design so they can use it?

Its about time Lightning was retired.
It was a good idea, but now its time has passed.
One port to rule them all. One charger to charge them all.

As others have noted, the lightning connection is a male cable to female port. But USB-C is a female cable to a male port. (who thought this was a good idea?!?) This USBC arrangement can cause issues over time.

I charge my iPad Pro every day with USB-C since 2018. The plug and the connector feel like new. I use my 2019 MBP Pro USB cable and carger to do this.

Everything feels like new. Apple uses high quality USB-C connectors and ports. In the meantime at least two Ligthning cables broke and eyeryone saw a Lighting cable break, this is just what those cables do.

I've had Lightning cables that did that, so it's no uncommon for that to happen, unfortunately.
Don't forget that the Lightning cables should be MFI as in Made for iPhone/iPod/iPad.
Otherwise, you'll get the popup display that says 'Accessory is not supported'.
People must pay more for MFI cables but it works better obviously.
Apple won't want to lose its cash cow from selling MFI accessories and will fight to the very end until it has to or is made to switch away from Lightning.

Read many people posting at several online boards that use their iPhones for 4K videos and hate Lightning because of the slow transfer speed whenever saving to the computer.
It's no different than transferring other file types or backing up to the PC using Lightning which is very slow.

One thing I wonder: occasionally, I've had to clean my lightning port because little bits of pocket lint accumulate and get pressed in by the cable. If I notice a problem charging, I've gotten to taking a toothpick (non-conductive) to fish out a small compressed blob of lint. How is the USB-C port going to compare? With that little "fin" in the middle, it either will be less likely to collect lint, or (flipside) impossible to clean if it does.

I have C ports on my Mac that don't have this issue, but I also don't routinely put my MacBook into my pocket for hours a day.
Putting it into your belly-button would also encourage it to get all linty. ?

It seems as Apple will continue to keep lightning ports as long as we keep buying iPhones lol. If this years IPhones sell well, do you really think Apple plans to switch a iPhone to USB C when a port isnt a big deal for the general population but it is for myself and many others here.

I will wait until next year to see if they make the switch but the current Pro max seems to be a 3 year device and the 2024 iPhone will be enticing while I still continue to enjoy other more innovative devices until then and even then.

This is what the EU regulation tells you:
Every electronic device big enough to incorporate USB-C, has to implement it. Any more questions?

Yeah, really - i mean:
Keyboards
Trackpads
Mice
youname it ….

?
Just one more question: what does the EU have to do with the rest of the planet?
