I really don't like having to carry and worry about 2 cables all the time... both at home and away. You can easily forget to pack one of the two. And at home, we constantly scramble to find the right cable for the right device--even for a fairly decent organizer as I am.

They need to move on to USB-C. However, I wonder if that’ll affect wired CarPlay. People assume it’ll just work but that wasn’t the case with the Works with iPod transition from 30-pin connector to lightning.

I’m curious how iPad users have liked or disliked type-C as a physical connector (ignoring speeds, features, etc.).

Some comment they don’t like the physical connector.

How have iPad users held up? Would you want to go back to Lightning?
My main complaint is that I need 2 different cables for my iPhone and iPad (even if the charger has the same socket).

Still I had my Sony headphones which use a type-C plug to charge, so I didn’t have to add a new cable among mine.

At this point I would enjoy some convergence toward the type-C, though.

I upgraded a few years ago from an iPad Air with lightning to an iPad Pro with USB-C, and I wouldn't want to go back. I use the iPad as a complement to my MacBook, and it's so nice on the go to have to carry only one cable for my MacBook, my iPad, my external battery, my girlfriend's Android, etc. It would be perfect if my iPhone and my AirPods could be USB-C too, and it would come with some extra benefits regarding the speed and the versatility.

I like how the graphic in the article has a ‘down arrow’ pointing towards where the USB-C charging port would be, as if we all didn’t know or weren’t aware of that.
“They moved the headphone jack charging port to the BOTTOM TOP… of the phone.”

?????????

This should have happened years ago. And it should happen because USB-C is fundamentally better than lightning — more reliable, faster charging, interoperable. It shouldn’t require, or be based upon, government regulation to get this done.

Yes and no. Yes, it’s probably better. But the absolutely phenomenal size of the accessories market for iPhones means there’s a big sustainability burden attached to any switch in port too.

I think that’s why we’ve seen Apple push wireless, with a lightening fallback first. Move enough of your market away from ports entirely and then there is less of an issue when you change that port.

If you're talking Apple's own cables, i definitely agree. But I spent the extra money to get Anker Powerline II USB-A to Lightning cables and even after three years, so far so good!
I hear you. This has always been an odd dichotomy with Apple products that's gone back since the original iPod was introduced. Apple makes an excellent product line (iPod, iPhone, etc.) with absolutely superb build quality, but then often makes incredibly mediocre accessories for them.

Lightning connectors are good but the cables are crap. The wear out too fast as it loses their polymer and metal mesh. tons are already at recycled.
I still have my original lightning cable from my 5s, although it is showing signs of being tattered. I understand, if one abuses these types of cables, they will break and bend.
