Apple is indeed testing iPhones that are equipped with USB-C ports instead of Lightning ports, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman. Apple does not plan to make the switch from Lightning to USB-C until 2023 at the earliest, with this year's iPhones continuing to offer a Lightning port.

We first heard about a potential swap to USB-C from Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who earlier this week said that Apple was planning to abandon the Lightning port in favor of a USB-C port in the 2023 iPhone 15 models.

There have been endless rumors about Apple adopting USB-C ports over the years, especially after Apple started using USB-C for the iPad lineup, but so far, Apple has stuck with Lightning for the iPhone.

Apple may be planning to swap because of legal requirements that could be implemented in Europe. The European Union is working on legislation that would require Apple to use USB-C technology across its product lineup, on iPhones, iPads, and AirPods.

All devices sold in Europe would need to have a universal USB-C port should the legislation be passed, so Apple would need to ship special USB-C iPhone models in Europe or simply make the swap to Lightning worldwide.

USB-C ports would allow for faster charging speeds and quicker data transfers, plus it would bring the iPhone in line with the Mac and iPad models that already use USB-C.

If Apple does transition to USB-C, Gurman says that the company will come out with an adapter that would let USB-C iPhones connect to accessories that have Lightning ports.

Apple will do ANYTHING to make you buy new cables, accessories, and adapters etc regardless if it's a good idea or not. They constantly change things around just to sell you more stuff. Agree with me or not, but you know I'm right.

Damn, the whole family is on the upgrade path this year, but we may hold out if they are going USB C. Having one cable for damn near everything we own would be more than welcomed.

Go ahead and hate me but I like Lightning and plus I have a bunch of Lightning accessories and lightning cables all around the house.
So this is the thing that nobody here ever wants to address. For the average macrumors forum user USBC makes sense, they typically take better care of their devices so the difference in sturdiness doesn't matter, they have a ton of usb c stuff already, and they likely are using the port for data transfer.

For the average consumer there are some benefits but there are also drawbacks. People have tons of lighting cables and accessories, for many their phone is their primary device and they don't have a bunch of USB c stuff laying around, people beat and bang on phones all the time and usb c is more fragile, they have probably never even used the port for data transfer or forgot phones even still did that.

With the EU regulations coming apple likely has to make the switch or go portless and they certainly don't mind the mifi fees (as small as they are in the scheme of things). However let's not pretend there won't be an army of boomers upset their old accessories either don't work or require a dongle now. You're parents are absolutely going to be calling you confused and complaining if there next phone has usb c instead of lightning.

I’ve used USB-C for at least six years and have never had to replace a cable. Seems like I am replacing Lightning cables very often. So USB-C for iPhone please. This year!

usb c is more fragile
This is absolutely false.

It's not like this is the first time that the connector changed on an iDevice. Apple clearly had no problem orphaning accessories when they moved away from the 30-pin connector.

Apple should’ve done this years ago. Usb-c is better than lightning in so many ways and is interoperable with so many chargers and thunderbolt and usb4 cables. Faster charging and faster usb/pcie speeds.

It’s high time for apple to offer lightning on the iPhone, just like it has on the iPad and the Macintosh.

I really want USB-C, thought that the iPhone 7 should have come with it. But I hope they make a stronger connector. I've had two iPads with USB-C that have needed the connector replaced and we are not hard on devices.

Decades of Apple adopting and forcing ports on us when there is barely any support for them, and then they drag their heels on this…why?

I’m curious how iPad users have liked or disliked type-C as a physical connector (ignoring speeds, features, etc.).

Some comment they don’t like the physical connector.

How have iPad users held up? Would you want to go back to Lightning?
It’s great. Nice to be able to charge both iPad and MacBook Pro on the same cable. Would be even nicer to be able to charge the iPhone the same.

This is a perfect case of left hand (software) not talking to the right hand (hardware). They push the iPhone 13 as an alternative to a movie camera, give you ProResX, et al and then saddle the lightning port with USB 2 transfer speeds?!? This could have been solved with Lightning, but I’m happy to see USB-C come to the iPhone.

I want usb-c but don't really need it as I utilize wireless charging and my battery easily lasts me a full day. I've had my phone 1 year and plugged it in a handful of times, usually when I travel.

People are STILL bitching about it. Apple is in a different place as a company than they were then and the iPhone is a much more ubiquitous device than any mac, iPod, or even the early iPhones were. It's not to say there aren't positives to USB C, just to give perspective of what a more layman users experience is.

Let’s be honest, the rumours for iPad and iPhone have been substandard at best the last 18 months or so.

I wouldn’t be surprised if THIS YEAR’S iPhones have USB-C.
