A Linux-based phone becomes more appealing every day...
Personally, AI isn’t interesting. I’m not wowed by things created by a machine, and I would never rely on machine learning instead of learning about something myself.
Apple is expected to offer its new AI features in iOS 18 and other Apple operating systems as an opt-in service, as a way of allowing users wary of the technology to steer clear of it, reports Bloomberg.

Apple has been working on a deal with OpenAI to integrate its ChatGPT technology into iOS 18, and has come to an agreement to integrate its ChatGPT technology into iPhones and other Apple devices.
That partnership is expected to be announced next week at WWDC. However, the decision to green-light the deal reportedly did not come easily. Executives are said to have had concerns about reputational damage from a "rogue chatbot," while some people within Apple are even said to have a "philosophical aversion" to having a chatbot integrated into Apple software.
Ultimately, however, Apple felt that consumers would expect the cutting-edge technology to be offered by the company. By outsourcing the chatbot function, Apple can distance itself from the technology, and by providing AI features as an opt-in service, consumers will be given the choice to use it or not.
Apple is also in talks with Google about incorporating Gemini into its operating systems. As it negotiates the deals on a case-by-case basis, Apple may ultimately offer a number of third-party chatbots across its operating systems, according to today's report, citing people familiar with the matter.
Apple's decision to partner up with another company to deliver advanced AI features reportedly came after it hit a wall in its own artificial intelligence. Apple is known to have been working on its own large language model (LLM), the algorithm that underpins generative AI, and found that it could power basic features like voice memo transcriptions, photo editing, new Safari search capabilities, and Message auto-replies. However, Apple is said to have realized "early on" that competitors like Google and OpenAI were "far ahead in chatbots and on-the-fly assistance."
In iOS 18, Apple's LLM work will likely be limited to new Siri features, with the virtual assistant expected to be able to control all individual features in apps for the first time. These features are expected to work on-device, with more advanced AI features relying on cloud servers. This may be where OpenAI's technology is more likely to come in. Regardless, Apple is believed to see the OpenAI agreement as a stop-gap measure while it continues to work on its own generative AI technology.
Today's report also claims that Apple is looking beyond chatbots in its AI research, and intends to use LLMs to help power a pair of robotic devices that it is secretly developing. These are said to include the previously rumored table-top robotic arm with an iPad-like display, as well as a mobile robot that can follow users around and handle chores on their behalf. Apple reportedly also plans to integrate cameras and AI features into future AirPods.

I’ve tried ChatGPT. I don’t enjoy having fake conversations with my phone.I'm kind of a later adopter on using ChatGPT, but once you start using it, Siri is 100% completely inadequate. Apple had no choice here. You will be having conversations with your phone -- you will be! Or at least you will be giving verbal directives.
Considering Google has Gemini built into Android phones without a service fee, this wouldn't be a good move for Apple. This fully aligns with the fact that Apple most likely can't support all the AI requests if some 50-70% of all iPhone owners jump to iOS 18 within a few months from launch.
"Opt-in" sounds to me like it's going to be a new service with a monthly fee or only be available as a part of either Apple One or some of the most expensive iCloud+ plans. You then opt in and pay an extra fee on top of your Apple One or iCloud+ plan. Non-AI bundles will still be available.
Apple giving every iOS 18 user free AI and paying server costs out of pocket only makes sense if its competitors offer the same with no monthly fees for AI.
But I do expect Apple maybe offering this service for free for a few months, to get us hooked. Or maybe because it's going to be super buggy and "in-beta" initially.
Still unlikely as that could lead to way more server traffic than Apple can support right now.
I wish there was an opt-in for most things in iOS.
“Before seeing a single thing on it” is simply not accurate. Folks on this site have read multiple MR stories about upcoming AI features. Are they “rumors”? Yes. And based on those descriptions, many of us find those AI features utterly useless, and often they look like way more trouble than they are worth. Not sure why you seem surprised members of a rumors site forum post opinions on the published rumors.Still, how can people say it's useless before seeing a single thing on it?
Really?We
lol could you imagine your parents trying to figure out a chat bot, or even trying to explain it to them?
100% agree. How old are your parents? They don't understand what Google is? If they do, with a short introduction they will understand chatbot too.
What normally happens is at least 2 year old phones get all of the new features from the iOS upgrade & ones from 3 years older start to get features cut from it. It’s never been from 1 year old phone only gets all the new featuresFeatures being restricted to new models isn't anything new. 14 Pro will be 2 years old by the time iOS 18/iPhone 16 comes out.
You'll likely get some AI features (all cloud powered ones) but not them all due to RAM (and possibly storage) limitations. Again, this isn't a new thing with Apple. There is no reason to expect Apple to bring all new features to old models.
And all I can say is Gemini nano is still bag of hurt and rubbish. It still requires internet connection for super complex AI. Basically, Gemini nano is baby AI.Gemini nano on Pixel 8 series says hello, All the AI you need for a mobile device is already on Android.
Then why don’t you switch to Windows while you’re at it. You don’t understand the perfectionism of Apple. They don’t rush out the product and have it fail.My Pixel 8 can do that but my nearly double the price iPhone 15 Pro just has a stupid useless island at the TOP of the screen just out of reach one handed.
So what don't you understand about this? It’s all about the hardware being able to support AI’s power requirements and computing power (advanced neural networking). What makes you think your 13 has the guts to do this but instead want to imply planned obsolescence?Great. We’ll see in 5 days, can’t wait for my iPhone 13 to be cut off after not even 3 years 😀
They are keeping Steve’s legacy of “It just works” and perfectionism alive and well.
Your apps will still work it only becomes a problem when your on an iOS that’s maybe 3 years out of date not 1 year as you can still use an iPhone X & that only goes to iOS 16. You can hang on to iOS 17 for a bit longer like last year they still had an iOS 16 update out May 2024 iOS 16.7.8 & that was for bug fixes and security enhancementsThat's not really an option. Not for long anyway. Security updates will stop coming within a couple of months. Soon applications will start breaking.
I tried to stay on iPad OS 15 from before they ruined the TV app. Rapidly became a problem.
My iPhone 12: Hold my beer. 😝Fortunately my iPhone 14 Pro is obsolete and don’t have to worry about such things![]()
It’s worth upgrading to iOS 18 just for RCS messaging aloneI don’t understand your thinking as this will be the main theme for iOS 18 & you don’t want to use the features.
My question would be why upgrade to iOS 18 if you don’t want to use any of this & just stay on iOS 17
The more choices, the better.I’d love to see many more options to enable/disable features in general in iOS.
Any new AI features can hopefully be disabled at a granular level or just not used.
On the contrary, Apple usually seems pretty ethical so I’m glad their eyes will be behind closed doors and in the know. Not a good light after all the bad press OpenAI has been receiving.
Geez. You sure seem worked up about something Apple hasn't done yet. So negative.Exactly, Gemini on Pixels and Galaxy is great because its useful stuff like photo editing or email summaries.
the average user does not want a freaking chat bot or cares if its on device or not, they just want cool stuff and it feels like all these leaks have Apple crapping their pants and rushing to shove some coked up Siri in our faces.
But...but...my fancy Neural Engine! Apple has included the world's most advanced Neural Engine in every iPhone for years! Surely it can do...something?
I don’t think it’s quite as straightforward as “maybe 3 years out of date”. I think it depends on what versions of OS each developer wants to support, so individual apps may fall into that “you need to upgrade OS” chasm at different times. If you don’t use many apps and/or the ones you use haven’t adjusted to any new OS API changes (or don’t have any adjustments to make), you could go a few years but others may get there sooner.Your apps will still work it only becomes a problem when your on an iOS that’s maybe 3 years out of date not 1 year as you can still use an iPhone X & that only goes to iOS 16. You can hang on to iOS 17 for a bit longer like last year they still had an iOS 16 update out May 2024 iOS 16.7.8 & that was for bug fixes and security enhancements
You phone doesn’t just stop working because you won’t upgrade to the latest ios 18
