“I had no idea the impact this would ultimately cause,” DeHart continued. “We're pretty apologetic to the people who relied on us to keep this information secure."

I don't know about you, but I'm still pissed off at that conspiracy theorist Galileo Galilei. How dare he allege that Church lied about the Earth being the center of the universe? As if the Sun didn't go around the Earth... what a nut! I'm glad they put him in jail... He was an out of control total tinfoiler...

Ridiculous analogy. Galileo didn't just pull his ideas out of his butt. He wasn't a paranoid; he was inquisitive. He made mathematical models and scientific observations. He was trying to find out why the current belief of things didn't seem to be reflected by the math. If anything, he was a tinfoil hat buster. The church was the greatest myth maker and distorter of truth, presenting its tinfoil hats to the people under penalty of death. It's not much better today, in terms of human biology and sexuality.

Well, at least the good news is that Apple was ahead of the curve long before this happened, inducing developers to switch from UDID to more anonymous forms of user id.

You're all wrong.

This is clearly Obama's doing! These UDIDs will be used to identify and enable a citizen's GPS, whereby which a drone will be sent to your coordinates and fire rockets at your precise location, as you explode into a bloody mist.

It's all part of Obama's secret predator drone kill list, which specifically targets Americans planning to vote for Romney. Long story short, if you're on the list Obama's got your number, and he's coming for you.

I watch a lot of Fox News.

This is NOT a big deal... ANYONE can get this data. All you need to do is publish an app on the app store and then you get this data from every person who downloads your app. Make a good enough FREE app and you will get quite a few users.

Also note that this information is useless and of little value.

Anonymous doesn't target innocent people.

I'd bet money that Bluetoad is a front for the CIA or for some FBI shell company.

There is no one group called Anonymous. Anybody can call themselves Anonymous. You could. I could call my dog Anonymous.

For cripes sake, do you even know what you posted 5 minutes ago?

You do realize, do you not, that your second point totally invalidates your first post?

I would say something like "All credibility lost" but that would be an insult to those posters who have actually built up credibility.

Less than two days now to launch and its gone awefully quiet on the rumour front. Maybe Tim Cook was right about doubling down on secrecy. Hardware is obviously hard to stop all leaks with all the different suppliers. Either that or there is no new suprises.

Flipboard

See, FBI is in their name!!

Quick everybody! Put your aluminum hat back on! Also, put on a chastity belt - You can never be too sure with the black helicopters overhead.

The NBC article says:
When matched with other information, the UDID can be used to track users' app usage, social media usage or location.
Uh, yeah, it *could* be... when matched with app usage, social media usage and location data. Come on.

98% Correlation? that's close but where did the other 20,000! UDID's come from?

I'd guess it's the other way around, 98% of the Blue Toad UDIDs were on the hacked list. They probably tested - say - 100 UDIDs and found 98 of them on the hacked list. It's possible the other 2% were new devices added to the Blue Toad list after the site was hacked.

Obviously, they were aware of some 'event', since they knew when it happened. I wonder if they reported it immediately, if they were aware UDIDs were taken in that attack, or did they only report it when the list was published.

Edit - just read they reported it when realised they were the source. Did they not report anything when the incident originally happened?

You're correct. I have a 1 in 10 chance of my device being on that list.

However. I have 4 devices so my odds are now up to 4 in 10.

So apparently if you have 12 devices you have a 12 in 10 chance?

(And you meant 1 in 12, according to Anonymous' statement that they leaked 1 M of 12 M UDIDs hacked).

Stat 101 lesson people. Assuming all 12 M UDIDs of any and all users of BlueToad were stolen but only 1 M were leaked, if you have one device that used their software it's a 1 in 12 chance.

It gets trickier after that.

The relevant question becomes what is the chance I didn't get leaked if I have n devices that used BlueToad?

It can be approximated by (11/12)^n for small n, although technically it follows (11e6/12e6)*((11e6-1)/12e6)*((11e6-2)/12e6)* ...

The chance that you did get leaked is therefore 1-(11/12)^n

So i you have 4 devices your actual chance you were leaked is closer to 30% (About 29.4% by my reckoning), rather than 4 in 12 or 33% by your incorrect logic.

The more you know.

No, I'm not a statistician. But my undergrad stat class was more relevant to my career than 3rd semester calc ever will be :)

I got the latest from MSNBC, or was it Obama's campaign? Oh well no difference anyway, Obama's team has said they can't do anything about this program because it was just one of many that they inherited from the Bush administration, like Gitmo, Drones, Afghanistan (aka the good war), and the economy.

Long story short, it's Bush's fault! :)
