What Nicolas Peter was actually saying: "Apple? Who cares. We've got bigger problems... as in our kidney grill design language is giant dumpster fire. Seriously, our grill is humungous for no apparent reason."

For real BMW, fix your 'ish.
Yup. Real BMWs have a shark nose…

"I sleep very peacefully," said Peter when Bloomberg asked for his opinion on Apple entering the car market. "Competition is a wonderful thing - it helps motivate the others.

You will not be able to sleep peacefully once Apple car is released... Get ready... It's coming... #AppleCar

See you back in Germany BMW.
You'll need a monthly subscription in order to use it. AppleCar One plan so you can upgrade every year for only 100K and 10K a month. Gold carbon wheels and Speakers that can only play Apple Music. 👀 🙄 Tesla is the real deal.

Why is this even news? Did anyone expect a BMW executive to respond that they have an inferior product, are scared of competition, and would therefore be closing the company down?

Maybe they expected him to laugh like Balmer did.

Not saying the Apple car will be a hit like the iPhone. But, I think that’s media just doing it’s job. Trying to create debate.

Amid rumors that Apple is working on an Apple-branded car that will come out in the next decade, BMW Chief Financial Officer Nicolas Peter today told Bloomberg that he's not concerned about the threat of an Apple vehicle.

"I sleep very peacefully," said Peter when Bloomberg asked for his opinion on Apple entering the car market. "Competition is a wonderful thing - it helps motivate the others."

He went on to explain that BMW is in a "very strong position" and wants to "remain in a leading position of the industry."

BMW executives have been similarly calm about Tesla's growing dominance in the car market. Chief Executive Officer Oliver Zipse in February said that "it won't be easy" for Tesla to continue growing at a rapid pace as traditional car makers come out with electric vehicles. "The rest of the industry is moving ahead big time," said Zipse.

Apple is said to be working on an Apple-designed and branded vehicle that will be fully autonomous and electric. Apple is rumored to be looking for manufacturing partners and at one point, was considering Hyundai/Kia. We're still many years away from an Apple vehicle, however, with rumors suggesting that work on the car is in the early stages with Apple planning for a launch in 2025 at the earliest.

I feel much safer driving a real car than i would on any Apple toy car. Specially after these past few bad storms. Cybertruck however sounds much more appealing :D

So next will be the CEO of Mercedes followed by Toyota ...

Well yes it is news. Considering traditional manufacturers in the past have either dismissed Tesla as not a real car company along only been dipping their toes in the EV market; it’s a shift that they now see Apple as a contender before we even know if they have a car program. It’s news.

What has been Tesla's biggest problem? - Always manufacturing. Order a car now, receive it in a year. Maybe 3 years if you want an unreleased model.

They have a desirable product that people want but their ability to manufacture enough for everyone who wants one has always been the issue.

Apple intends to solve that problem for themselves by partnering with an established car manufacturer. But I think if Apple does come out with a car that is under $100,000 they will have so many orders it will be tough to get some of the components like batteries. This has been a thorn in many electric car manufacturers sides, the inability to make enough batteries.

I'm curious if Foxconn and other traditional Apple partnered manufacturers will try to bid on making their cars. Time will tell.

Dude, you read the article.

That's what MR wanted. And like me, you even took the time to comment.

They played us perfectly.

The only difference? YOU didn't figure this out.

VW's CEO readily admits that Tesla is impossibly far ahead and that his goal is to be a "fast follower" and to make VW the second largest AV/EV company.

It's a good sign of leadership, I'd say, to be willing to acknowledge your shortcomings and to have a plan for how to address them. And it's not like being the second largest auto company will be a bad thing for VW - they've spent plenty of time behind GM or Toyota. For that matter, BMW isn't even a top 10 auto company - if they weren't so content with going nowhere, they have huge opportunities to expand. But I guess they're aware that they make trash and that nobody would buy a BMW truck or van - no company wants to own a fleet of BMWs because that'd be a colossal waste of money.
I agree with the point you are making, but disagree on the details. VW is the number 2 auto company, just barely behind Toyota (just over a billion behind). GM is number 7, at less than half VW. BMW is number 6, just about 1 billion more than GM.

It's funny because discussions about BMW thinking with regards to market forces and investor pressure come up all the time but no one ever mentions the fact that BMW is 50% owned by two people. Stefan Quandt has enough stake alone to prevent anyone else from taking control of BMW.

No one at BMW gives any flying Fs about what anyone thinks but Stefan Quandt and Susanne Klatten.

Using pre-pandemic numbers, Toyota sold 10.74 million vehicles around the world in 2019, trailing Volkswagen AG's record annual sales of 10.97 million vehicles.

In 2018, Volkswagen sold 10.83 million vehicles, edging out Toyota for the No. 1 crown.

GM sold 7.72M units.

Who is trailing who?

BMW wants to "remain in a leading position of the industry."

Just because you want something doesn't mean it's going to happen, otherwise there would be gold medals for everyone at the Olympics.

lol he must be on sleeping pills to sleep peacefully, they can hardly compete on ICE now let alone EV
This might be the most ignorant statement I've ever read on this forum and that's saying something.
