OK, so Apple Maps directions aren’t displayed between the dials (built in Tom Tom ones are) - but this isn’t that special.
My little 2020 Peugeot 208 has two screens, one for dials and driving info (with a 3D effect) where the physicial dials would be in an older car and then a wide one angled towards the driver in the middle. With CarPlay on the main screen.

I suppose the only difference with this and any other recent car is that it can use a second display (or the first depending on how you look at it) as a limited second screen for CarPlay?

Wait, what? They pay BMW to unlock CarPlay projection, per year?
No, CarPlay is free for BMW since MY2019+

As to the original article point. The video isn’t clear how detailed the map projection is for CarPlay. It showed the directional line, but not much more detail and it also didn’t show the HUD. So very hard to know how well it stacks up against the BMW built in NAV, but cool to see BMW improving in this area anyway. They seem to be the OEM most interested in pushing the boundaries with CarPlay.

“One of these things is not like the other…”

they really should hire a designer to integrate the design. Epic fail.

It’s pretty pathetic that the charge $80/year for CarPlay. Apple should restrict them from doing that.
They don’t anymore. For once people complaining about subscriptions changed things. Just got a 330e and was seriously going to go with another maker if they tried that scam with me. I don’t mind paying for things but hate getting ripped off.

With a wide screen display, I expect that there will be those who expect you can run a Zoom or Teams or Facetime meeting and have lots of people's faces in little boxes all across the display. What about some youtubes too!

Wouldn't want to have to look up very much to see what's going on with your driving progress while you collab!

I hope Tesla is paying attention. That's my one hangup right now on pulling the trigger...
I think the chances of Tesla adding CarPlay are extremely slim. They have their own plans for enhancing their system which is better than most already. There were rumors over the past couple of years of them adding Apple Music, but that seemed to go away.

I don't think BMW knows what it's doing with their design. Why does the i4 and the iX have huge fake grills even though it's an electric vehicle? I don't mind the big grills that much when it's on an ICE vehicle, because at least it's functional. What the heck does an electric vehicle need those huge kidneys for?

It’s “head-up display” (singular), since it applies only to the (singular) driver, referring to how they can look at the display with their head up.

”Heads up” is, I believe, an expression from American football.

Tell it to Merriam Webster

Or tech companies who make them

Sorry to ruin the party, but Apple Maps directions and search functions are pretty much useless in most parts of Europe compared to Google. Would have been much better PR to launch this first in San Francisco, rather than in Europe.

I don’t like the direction the industry is going with on screen only controls. Really going to be hard for me to decide on a replacement for my 2016 vehicle when the brand I enjoy is going this same path as BMW for screen only controls for most functions.

I definitely like cars of this class, but also enjoy wearing gloves and having chunky buttons, knobs and switches to operate when needed.

so if you can’t afford something it’s all the sudden “cringe worthy”?
What part of their post gave an indication of their income level or ability to afford this vehicle?

This. It’s so much worse than Google Maps in the UK. It’s got better, but it’s still nothing compared to Google Maps - which can find literally anything anywhere. It almost stopped me switching to iPhone because I didn’t want to switch then just install all the Google apps I used on my Android phone on the iPhone. But I got a new car with built in Tom Tom sat nav, which circumvented the problem.
