Love the concept - hate BMW.

I hope other manufacturers follow and don’t waste money designing poor copycat systems.

Other car manufacturers are finally getting the hint with CarPlay over their own poor systems.

Leave the tech to the tech firms.

Kia will release this in two years and it will be one-fifth the cost of BMW's.

Toyota will release it in a year but it will only work with their proprietary touchscreen device you'll have to carry in addition to your smartphone and you will have to pay a monthly service fee.

You know if you'd bought a Tesla it would have had this feature years ago, and that the Tesla would still be getting new features today?

Why on earth would someone purchase a car that wasn't a Tesla? We make fun of Android phones all the time on these forums for how they generally receive updates for about a year, then they rapidly age as they never get another update after that. Buying a non-Tesla is worse than that - a non-Tesla was generally last updated months-years before you bought it. It was worse than a Tesla when you bought it, and while the Tesla only gets better, everything else gets worse.

Sell your BMW now before you have to pay someone to get rid of it.

Yep, I'm just glad Tesla's have Carplay. /s

Lol did you forget /sarcasm?

Something similar to this has been around, I've always wondered why it didn't catch on. It's a fob that is pretty much the size of a business card, you can just put it in your wallet. My old Genesis had the option, but not in the US. No you can't give out temporary keys and such like with Apple's product, but at least you wouldn't need your phone.

lol thanks , tell me more how I should live my life and what else should I buy. I can go on a long rant making any brand sound bad, I would rather not. I hope you enjoy your car, I admire that company, but I will stick to my Bimmer and Audi.

Also making fun of android is stupid. People have choices, priorities and make purchasing decisions based on them. Never understood rooting for the competitors to go away, Android pushes Apple to be better, same for different car companies.

Happy I moved away from BMW.

I’m not a BMW owner, (And never have been), but I’m generally curious why you moved away from BMW or what was your thoughts/experiences? (I.e. Mechanical/software, maintenance).

I loved my BMWs over the years, but their glacial pace of adopting technology (specifically EV), their lack of making anything backwards compatible, and even charging for Nav updates caused me to move away from them. I replaced my 3 series with a Tesla Model 3 just over 2 years ago, and replaced my X3 with a Model Y in May.

I just read an article today that said BMW will also be implementing in the very near future to pay for options in a whole different way. For instance if you want heated seats in your car you pay a monthly fee and they activate the feature via software. The same will apply for a slew of other features like blind spot monitoring and other options you would pay for. This allows customers to only pay for the options they want and can activate them when they want to use them. The negative is if you pay for heated seats and you don’t pay them monthly they will deactivate the feature via software over the air. In other words they will control what you get and what you don’t get based on if you pay for them for not.

I wish I can buy a Tesla but Tesla today is like the iPhone when it worked with AT&T only back in 2007.

Safety features ( blind spot... ect ) should be legally standard. Don't care what the argument is.

nice, good thing i have a spare BMW around.

Is it me or Apple is basically making what Steve Jobs was against at his time? Making products for the rich. It will take several years to reach all carmakers.

Why would someone buy a non-Tesla? The answer would be people who have different tastes in cars. The BT Implementation that Tesla uses isn’t without its faults.

What are you even talking about? CarPlay (wireless CarPlay with Qi charging) works perfectly in BMWs.

I couldn’t agree more. I’ve only owned BMW’s (3, 5, and X5) in the past, but they just aren’t the same anymore. I remember when the 3 series drove like a sports car. Moved on to Tesla 3 and Y and love them both so much.

I’d only buy a Tesla, but the reason most people “buy” BMW’s is because they historically lowered their lease residuals so you are only paying 35-40% of the car over 3 years even though it depreciates closer to 50% depending on the model. I think BMW adjusted the residuals in the last couple of years, but buying a gas car in 2020 makes no sense. For a lease I think it’s fine because your turning it back in by 2023 and can go electric then.

See my post #19 above. I know your 4-series does not have iDrive 7, but I think your X3 does and would be eligible for the upgrade mentioned in my post.

got a 04/2020 5 series. That has ID7in a light version without OTA. Guess it will not benefit from these news.

BMW has gone in a weird direction, they keep trying to get folks into a subscription service. They wanted CarPlay to be an $80 per year subscription, but they cancelled it after overwhelming public backlash.

I love my 2012 BMW 128i sport, it’s the last of the good old BMW compact coupes, in my mind. Naturally aspirated in-line 6, rear wheel drive, hydraulic steering (not drive by wire), 6 speed manual, no iPad-like screen on my dashboard, perfect 50:50 weight distribution. What a fun car, pretty dang reliable for me too. They don’t make them like this anymore.

I've had BMWs and Minis, and really, driving them is fun. My E93 is really great. That said, you pay a premium. I've been thinking of getting a Genesis or a palisade instead of a 7/X7 just because the massive cost savings. I mean, they're literally 50k less.

Can the Tesla get an update that adds physical climate control buttons so I don't have to look down? Also, evidently there's no CarPlay, why? I'd get a Tesla over a BMW just for the mechanical aspects cause I'm happy with just an aux but really wouldn't buy either rn. Teslas don't look nice enough for me to justify spending so much, and BMWs are crap that fall apart.

Also, in some places you just can't charge an electric car, mainly if you live in an apartment. I've heard good things about BMW's electric/gasoline uglybox car.

I had a Mini S previously, it was so fun to drive! Crazy little go-cart. It had so many problems though, what a money pit. I used to stop by the dealership every few weeks, they’d replace the quart of oil it had burned. Weird little turbo engine.

My current BMW 128i has been pretty reliable, besides the water pump going out around 50k miles. Not quite as “fun” as the Mini S was, even though it’s much quicker and more comfortable.

I’m less into cars now that I work from home, I could see myself just getting whatever next time, maybe some boring crossover. Maybe a cheap secondhand electric BMW i3, never have to get an oil change again. 😂

No buttons and no CarPlay. I agree on buttons, but CarPlay is pretty awful especially on such small screens. I only wish the Y increased from a 15” to a larger screen. I think the larger screen comes in the Cybertruck. I cant wait for that beast!!
