BMW Updates Connected App With Car Keys Support

BMW have become a no-go brand for me. First it was charging a subscription for CarPlay - when $20k econoboxes include it for nothing.
Then it’s charging a subscription to enable things like heated seats.

Very happy with my Range Rover Sport, next car will probably be a Rivian, BMW can’t stop making bad decisions, their EV strategy fell to pieces.

Too bad - I did not think either of those things were the end of the world. I think it is great if you don’t order heated seats, but could pay to turn them on if need later on. Nothing wrong with that.

I just want my 2019 5 series to support widescreen Carplay in the display. Is that too much to ask?

It most definitely can. It can be coded. Go to the BMW forums and you will find someone to do that for you, if you don’t have the equipment yourself. I actually thought the 2019’s could, but mine is a 2017 with full screen via coding.

You wan't me to get out my phone and hold it near my car to unlock it? And then I have to put it in a certain spot inside the car to start the car. Why is this better than the key-fob that stays in my pocket, lets me in my locked car, and to start it from the pocket.

Exactly. I feel like I'm missing something with this. If I can already touch to unlock the doors and keep the keys in my pocket to start the car, what's the point of this? Aside from sharing the key with someone, which might be handy a small amount of times, I just don't get the point of this.

You would not need your car key anymore. That would be nice!

It's trading in a key that stays in my pocket 100% of the time while I quickly get in for one that requires me to:

#1 Take phone from pocket/purse
#2 Unlock the phone
#3 Open the wallet app
#4 Select the appropriate wallet pass
#5 Authenticate my ID (Like Apple Pay?) (Not sure about this one)
#6 Hold the phone near the car for an amount of time

That's 5 to 6 steps before I load my 3 kids into the car while I'm usually carrying 1-2 bags/toys/kids. I'd much rather have a keyless entry fob/push button start.

I suppose, but it seems like an extra step to take my phone out of my pocket and touch it to the door handle, compared to now where I keep the key in my pocket and just open the door.
