In December I upgraded from the SS Series 4 to the 45mm SS Series 7 and I absolutely feel the larger screen is well worth the upgrade and I bought it knowing if the Series 8 had some big updates I would have to upgrade again, so a part of me would be happy to see no new sensors, etc so I can keep my money for another year lol

Apple's plan to add a body temperature sensor to the Apple Watch Series 8 is looking increasingly unlikely, based on recent comments made by well-connected Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman.

Apple is believed to have originally considered adding a body temperature sensor to last year's Apple Watch Series 7, but that didn't happen, with Bloomberg reporting in June that it would likely be introduced in the 2022 update instead. Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has also previously expressed optimism that body temperature sensing would be an Apple Watch Series 8 feature.

However, discussing rumored body temperature, blood pressure and blood sugar sensors for Apple Watch in his latest "Power On" newsletter, Gurman advises: "Don't expect any of these soon."
Whenever it does arrive, a body temperature measuring function for Apple Watch would be useful for fertility tracking and keeping track of sleep, and in the future, it could also detect when a user has a fever.

Apple is rumored to be working on a method for non-invasively monitoring blood glucose levels using optical sensors as well, potentially offering sufferers of diabetes a way to manage their condition that would be much easier, as it wouldn't require puncturing the skin.

Earlier this year, Apple was revealed to be the largest customer of the British electronics start-up Rockley Photonics, which develops non-invasive optical sensors for detecting multiple blood-related health metrics, including blood pressure, blood glucose, and blood alcohol levels.

Rockley's disclosure that its biggest client is Apple came about as the company prepared to go public in New York. Given the growth of Rockley Photonics and the scale of Apple's partnership with the company, it seems to be virtually inevitable that the company's health sensor technology will be coming to the Apple Watch at some stage, just not this year.

So the same sensors like Apple Watch 5, 6 and 7. i had no reason to upgrade from my Apple Watch 4 and i think this year will be no reason to upgrade again.

Very boring. Other Smartwatches are equipped with advanced sensors, but they are not compatible with my iPhone

so what is Watch Series 8 gonna have then? 0,01 mm thinner?
Maybe it will have 3 new watchfaces…another said reason that it is still not possible to create own watchfaces

Forehead thermometers are often dismissed as probably the least satisfactory technological body temperature measurement technique. I hope they avoid them.
True. In the absence of some kind of mathematical model, the only reliable way to measure body temperature is in the armpit, mouth, bottom and ear.

I’m wondering what the hold up is with at least a body temp sensor of some sort. My Oura ring was pretty good at detecting trends and fluctuations in body temp and other things. It pretty much knew I was ill when I had COVID. Pretty I impressed and that’s just a ring.
I bought an oura ring for me before christmas. I am impressed too, what it can measure for such a light and small thing. The accuracy is fine too

I would be surprised if the S8 didn’t get a new sensor. Unless the big changes for the S8 will be a redesigned body with flat sides which was rumored for the S7, a faster processor, a new color and not much else? The S7 could become the new SE at $299.

Maybe they should consider 2 year releases at this point. These yearly updates are pointless.
Nothing wrong with incremental improvements. You can still upgrade every two years while apple updates every year. The whole world doesn’t have to change to adapt to your expectations. Really don’t understand the point of this suggestion/complaint.

I respect that.

My guess is that Apple might use Rockley's sensor in AW8 for measuring core body temperature. This would be the only new measurement added. Rockley seems to have validated that their sensors can more accurately measure core body temp than other popular solutions (See: VIEW PDF). However, I would think that once Apple starts using Rockley's sensor (assuming they use Rockley at all), that it will be an all or nothing proposition. They will need to use the Rockley sensor for core body temp, blood oxygen, heart rate, and EKG (with the prospect of software unlocking features in the future like glucose, blood alcohol, etc.). I don't think they can additonally fit the Rockley sensor into AW8 with the already existing blood oxygen, heart rate, and EKG sensors. I believe Rockley's investor presentation showed that they expected revenues to start flowing in late 2022 and ramping strongly in 2023 (but they recently removed this info from the presentation). So who knows!!! But it is fun trying to put the puzzle pieces together!

Yeah, a contract with Apple would definitely ramp up revenues.

So, does that mean we have reached "peak" Apple Watch? In other words, just iterative updates from here on out and no revolutionary new features? This is turning out to be year 3 of the same Series 6 design...

Apple has been working with Rockley Photonics since 2017. They have spent at least $70M on Rockley technology so far. Not sure if Rockley's progress has hit a roadblock or if it is on track. Rockley wasn't expecting to see significant revenue from their solution until 2023 so maybe the AW8 won't receive any new technology. It seems that body temperature is probably the one measurable that Rockley has made the most progress with (See: rockley-photonics-announces-results-preliminary-143500138.html). Also Rockley released a slide deck that gives a great overview of their technology: Rockley Investor Presentation

Came to say similar things. More news on Rockley here: https://www.notebookcheck.net/Ambit...tform-passes-first-human-trials.595064.0.html

Presumably if they put the hardware in a watch for one thing like body temp, its feasable that software updates could enable new functions over time. Good presentation here: https://investors.rockleyphotonics.com/events-and-presentations/default.aspx
