Anyone got the new trackpad driver working in Vista RC2 yet? I cant get it to install for some reason.

Perhaps OT, but maybe not too far. Re: windows vista: 1) How "beta" is the current release? I know you can download it but how buggy is it (that is, is it any worse than "market ready" XP)? and 2) Are there compatability issues with things not running on Vista? Really, all I need windows for is halflife 2, which depends on Valve's Steam service...which doesn't mention Vista as one of the supported OSs.

I'd be happy to hear what your experience has been like.
Thx.

Is anyone else bummed that there's still no external iSight support? I know that the external iSight contains unspeakably harmful materials which will destroy the planet in a matter of weeks, but it would be nice to use Skype video in Windows to say my goodbyes.

1. Didn't you hear the Apple iSight has viruses on it, just like the 5.5G iPods? :D

2. Skype can do video for Mac too now.

Boot Camp vs. Parallels?

Hey all,

Can anyone speak of any real difference between Parallels and Boot Camp? What little I know of both, from what I understand Parallels allows you to run Windows WITHIN MacOSX, whereas Boot Camp is pretty much a boot loader.

Has anyone experienced any pains with Parallels? I'm wondering why I would even bother with Boot Camp at all (besides the fact that Boot Camp looks free and Parallels is what, $79?)

Thanks.

IMO, with running Vista RC2, it's fairly stable so far. My issue with Vista is its cost for features. I don't really see much in the way of UI improvement, outside of silly little graphics changes. Management seems to have gotten a little easier, but I dunno.

One thing that they did spend a lot of time on is the various new APIs for developers - there's a lot under there. So, Vista won't really be a big hit until developers get creative with the new toys that they have :).

That being said - I've pretty much converted and hopefully I won't need to worry too much about that. :)

I've found that Acrobat won't run correctly (Distiller crashes), I can't print to my Samsung ML-1710 via the network (I get a message concerning insufficient memory when I try to add it; I have 2GB, so this is obviously untrue), and so on. Vista won't really be usable until software vendors release applications and drivers for it, probably in the spring. For now, it's a toy.

Vista RC2 is stable on both my Mac and PC (I know evil, but I am a recent convert :), Athlon 3500+ 1gb ram 460 harddrive (18gb for vista) Geforce 7800GTX). On my PC I have decided to start running it as my main OS and have been doing it for about 2 weeks now. Steam and HL2,CS:S, and many other games work fine for me. I have been using it instead of XP for a couple of days now on my Macbook Pro (15" 2.0ghz Core Duo, 120 Hard Drive, (20 for Vista) 1gb Ram.) So far it seems to work Ok besides the driver problems with the trackpad and whatnot. I have been using mostly for 3d studio max on the go which didnt work well with RC1 but seems to be working better for me in RC2. I do think that Vista is waaay over priced, but the RC is free for now :).

Have said this elsewhere - I prefer the convenience of parallels but find that some things dont work properly with it (my garmin forerunner 305 and my iMagic trainer) which means I have to use boot camp for them. Bit of a pain but am grateful to be able to run them at all.

Do Not Install

DO NOT INSTALL. THIS IS A CRAP UPDATE.

Installed last night. Right when I rebooted windows I saw the blue screen. I have never had windows crash on this macbook pro yet. Then after playing with the new trackpad features... I started realizing how awful they are. The trackpad is less responsive. Sometimes the trackpad just stops detecting. The right click works perfect. The scroll barely works(meaning while I'm typing this I can not get it to work..but it has before).

Have yet to find a problem Mac side but that doesn't mean there isn't one.

Nothing but trouble with this update. Wait for the next update. I am already in the process of trying to get my old drivers back.    :(

So does this mean that my iSight is going to look like a picture now instead of a nuclear winter? (While running under windows)

Second opinion on parallels

Paralells (build 1940) you can switch back and forth seamlessly. It's worth it.

It's worth it if you don't mind a pretty bad (almost non-existent) implementation of USB. My iSight won't work on it, plugging in the iPod crashes not just Windows, but my whole MacBook. And the list goes on. The software is a good IDEA, but it's not ready for mass consumption. I'm really choked that I spent money on that beta-ware.

I mentioned USB problems in another post. Visit forums.parallels.com to get an impression of the full range of problems you may encounter. I don't mind dealing with some limitations if the beta is free, but a $79 beta is a little much, imo.

U need Boot Camp if u want to play games, i use Boot Camp and Parallels, and i don't have any stability problems.

limitations are:

Parallels: No Games, Less Ram, Bad USB compatibility.

Boot Camp: difficult to exchange files with the mac.

I'd agree that USB sucks on Parallels, but I don't think it's fair to say that the other 90% of Parallels is beta-quality. It does almost everything very, very well.

Didn't you notice that the USB sucked during the free trial they give before you have to buy it?

What problem is that? The card won't work on that display? I'm about to buy 8-core MP with the 1900XT card. XP won't work?

It works...but in order to install Windows you need a different monitor...you should also download and install the winacd monitor driver. I am using a MacPro with a 30" ACD and 1900xt and it works like a charm. Once in a while when I boot up I get slight color artifacting on my screen...if I dumb down the resolution then bump it back up again it corrects itself......seeing Windows run on the 30" display is a real treat...not to mention seeing OSX running on it ....I do video work and that setup is a treat.

I bet you've got an iMac, but to exchange files with windows, bothways, you need a FAT formatted HD. I formatted my Drive FAT to install windows, and lost a little functionality, but gained all that and more back in interoperability.

OK, i forgot to mention that i did not use FAT, NTFS sounded like a better choice at the time.

Parallels is tripe. Crashes on boot up for me which, obviously, renders it worthless to me.

All I'm after in BC now is support for volume and eject keys.

The volume keys work on my macbook.... and i think the eject one does to

Although windows sees the keys as F1 - F12 by deafult so you have to hold down FN when you press them if you want them to do the other function shown on the key ;)

2. Skype can do video for Mac too now.

Thanks MrCrowbar. But I'm finding Mac-to-PC video on Skype to be largely terrible. My parents just bought a PC rather than an iMac, against all my advice and actual scientific proof that this was a bad idea, and so I can't use iChat when I call them. Instead, using the Skype for Mac video beta (and their PC version of Skype Video), our conversations are punctuated by terrible lags and overpowering bursts of static. I had thought that PC-to-PC Skype might be better, so I was hoping that Boot Camp would produce some drivers for the external camera and I could use Skype for Windows when I call home. Though I'm prepared to believe that the PC-to-PC version is just as bad.

I can't figure out why Apple won't develop drivers for external iSight. I realise that this is a different technical challenge to the internal version since the video and sound are carried separately on the MacBooks and iMacs, but this still seems like the kind of thing that a Boot Camp boffin should be able to take care of in an afternoon or two.

As a Mac Mini user, I'd be interested to hear whether people think that the external iSight is peripheral non grata at Cupertino these days -- and whether this Boot Camp policy of not supporting the external camera is a sign of the times. Perhaps Apple are preparing a new version that will force us old-timers (or unsuspecting Mini owners) to re-buy?

Dude, don't you read the thread BEFORE posting? This question has been answered a dozen times and you are wasting time and bandwidth.

MacDrive, she no work in Vista, which is a deal-breaker for me.

The Jury's Still Out on Vista?

Not good:

F***ing excellent:

I guess the jury's still out, but I like the idea of spending nothing on the Vista RC a lot more than the idea of spending money on XP. Here's hoping for the best...

[Edit: oh, and thanks, everybody. I'm not sure I have a decisive answer yet, but your responses have been very helpful. My thanks.]

How interoperable, exactly, are the OSs?...and what sort of functionality do you lose?

gad, i feel like such a n00b. I've been away from windows for a long, long time.
