The welcome video is the best part. Perhaps they are saving the best for last.

I hate that stupid video because you can't exit it early, and you can't turn the volume down until it's done playing.

Yeah you can ...

The definition Apple uses of GM does not necessarily mean it is the final product. For example, Apple posted a second GM build for iOS 4.2.

The ONLY reason that happened was because there was a showstopping bug with Wi-Fi in the iPad build. That was the only change in the second GM build. The difference was so minor that Apple told developers not to resubmit their apps that had been built for original GM build.

The GM has always been the final release unless there is a showstopping bug. Even then, any other GM builds are released only to fix the bug.

Wow, lots of video hate. I actually kind of liked it - it reminded me of when I started using a Mac for the first time and how great the experience was. It was just one of those little things that made getting a new one feel special. It seems with each new version, the little special bits are getting weeded out.

Good. It was cool the first time I saw it, years and years ago. Tiger? Now, not so much. Just an annoyance.

DX that's one of my favorite things about buying a Mac. Why would they break a tradition like that? It better be there...

I'm guessing they will include a welcome video on Lion shipping with new Macs, a welcome video on an upgrade is really pointless.. IMO.

Or the Lion intro will be identical to the one in Leopard/Snow Leopard and only appears on first boots?

They could leave a YouTube link on the desktop for those who are interested...
The video goes against the philosophy of getting out of the user's way - even if it could easily be skipped, the fewer steps to a successful install the better.

why does the mouse in the picture look sorta funny. The light makes it look like a rounded edge instead of the crisp edge of the magic mouse. maybe its me...

That's because it's not a new OS. It's a glorified service pack. It requires 10.6 to install, is only available as a download on the app store, there's no option to install on a formatted disk, etc. From what I can tell, it's basically a collection of libraries that installs over Snow Leopard.

Don't get me wrong, the added features in Lion are cool, and Snow Leopard is a solid base to build from. But I would call it more of a large patch than a new OS.

Actually, 10.7 is a bigger advancement in APIs, foundation, performance and usability than 10.6.

GCD, LLVM/Clang/LLDB/Libc++/Compiler-RT/, OpenGL 3.2 system-wide, 1500 new APIs, OpenCL 1.1, Xcode 4 complete rewrite, etc., are just a few advancements over 10.6.

dev account

Do I need a dev account for installing GM version of Lion?? I wanna know ASAP!!!

Yeah but for IT folks who have to install OS X many times frequently, that 'tradition' is a pain.

And after seeing it for two OS X releases now the video has lost its charm. :)

Besides the download cost (or at least perceived cost, as 20 MB out of a several GB download is meaningless), I wonder if they also are planning ahead for "retina" displays and don't want a user's first experience to be an upscaled video.

I'm not to excited about apple's OS's anymore, sense leopard debut Mac OS X looks exactly the same but with new features but you know i'm going to buy it

I can't believe all the haters...

I think for all those mums and dads or kids who plug in their first Mac, it is a cool thing.
To those IT professionals complaining that it wastes "hours" of their life, c'mon... you are a tiny percentage.

Maybe apple should configure the "Esc" to exit the video, then EVERYONE will be happy. Oh, then there are those who complain about the hard disk space!... Ok, it also self destructs. Now is everyone ok with that setup?

On a slightly more serious note, I sometime reflect... If this was a windows community talking about a pending windows release, nobody would care about a welcome video, it would be about compatibility, should I install it, wait until SP1, is "Home Business Ultimate" as good as "Professional Basic", drivers, dll, hardware....

Phew, let's debate the welcome video, now where were we...

Two things would be nice:
1) A Welcome video that isn't the same as Leopard/Snow Leopard
2) An option to skip the video if necessary (maybe informing the user before it plays)

That's just my opinion

Nice, and thanks for the post!
