It's called marketing.

Which do you think will help sell more copies:

"OS X Lion introduces over 250 amazing new features. The world's most advanced OS is now even more powerful and will change the way you use your computer."

or

"OS X Lion introduces some new features. Not everyone will use all of them, but we think they're pretty decent. Check it out when you have time."

to be honest whilst i'll be getting Lion, I'm quite disillusioned with the ceaseless hype from Apple about their progressive OS changes.

It all sounds so juvenile and banal to crow about how "awesome" and "cool" the supposed changes are - do they have any idea how immature and childish they sound as middle aged men using such language in their promo videos?

Maybe its me being English and therefore having no tolerance for earnestness...

Or maybe its the fact that despite the endless hype Leopard didnt seem to really do much more than Tiger, and SL seemed an embarassed admission of the many flaws within Leopard.

I cant get too excited over a new look to a mail program that I will never use.

Its possible that you will get it if you get it pre-installed when the new machines start bringing it. But for now it just take up not so much SSD room as bandwidth which is not going to be fun when it comes to downloading this big boy.

Either way, I like the video if nothing else, its part of the Mac experience brings a smile when ever I see it.

Now all the windows trolls can comment. ROFL

I was having a hell of time getting Tiger on an old Mac Book to upgrade to Snow Leopard last week, so I took to a Genius Bar. They sold me a "Mac Box Set" and I decided to sit there for 40 minutes and do the install in the store to make sure it worked.

When the time came for the intro video to play, the Apple Store employees actually rolled their eyes in disgust and asked me to turn it down. Nobody likes that video!

I actually kind of liked it. How many people want to start up their computer for the first time and have it tell you to set everything up? It's cool to have a little video and dance to welcome you to your next best friend. It gives the computer a bit of a personality. I mean, what are people going to say when they first turn on their Mac? "Oh wow, this is nice. Welcome to you too."

They could change the song that went along with it though. do-do-da-do-do. lol

I personally rather have this as the theme song, oh yea baby never gets old every time I listen to it.
Queen: A Kind Of Magic (1986)
Princes Of The Universe

And two Katanas rather than the X. :D

Hahaha I don't blame them! They probably hear that tune every 15 minutes.

I can live without the Welcome video but if they screw with the startup chime.....

I wanna see all the extensions loading. :D

Okaaaay . . . sound manager, AppleTalk, QuickTime Musical Instruments . . . Clipping Extension . . . QuickDraw . . .

Where does the video live on a Mac in Snow Leopard?

It's buried... deep.

Open your HDD, then go to /System/Library/CoreServices. Find the Setup Assistant.app, right-click on it and click "show package contents" then go to Contents/Resources. Find TransitionSection.Bundle, right click on it and click "show package contents" then go to Contents/Resources/. The movie (intro.mov) and sound (intro-sound.mp3) are separate files. I put them together in iMovie and put them on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SyiwwfJInpE

That's because it's not a new OS. It's a glorified service pack. It requires 10.6 to install, is only available as a download on the app store, there's no option to install on a formatted disk, etc. From what I can tell, it's basically a collection of libraries that installs over Snow Leopard.

Don't get me wrong, the added features in Lion are cool, and Snow Leopard is a solid base to build from. But I would call it more of a large patch than a new OS.

First of all, Apple does not do service packs. Apple calls major O/S releases upgrades. This idea that unless Apple numbers their major O/S release as whole number bumps, they are just releasing a "service pack" is just plain silly.

Until you have used Lion please stop making silly statements about something for which you have no experience or knowledge about. No one is forcing you to upgrade to Lion. Think of it this way, you will save yourself $30 that you could use toward a nice Microsoft product.

If you think you can do a better job then Apple at producing software then by all means start your own company and show Apple how it is suppose to be done.

The difference between Mac and PC is that Mac has something like an intro video.

I remember having some buyers remorse when I first switched, but as soon as I turned on the machine and that video played, I knew I made the right choice. Is the video stupid/needless? Perhaps, but that doesn't matter. So many things that are essential to the Mac experience are.

As a technician, all I can hope for is that if they do include a welcome video and song, that they choose something different. I have seriously heard that song and seen that video THOUSANDS of times.

So, no video and crappy song is fine with me. Now I can do my job faster.

I'm just throwing out speculative suggestions here but:

Perhaps it's not included due to some sort of legal issues with the owner or label of whomever the new introductory music is by, so that it can't be added until the final product is out? Or maybe they've forgone the video from now on in order to shave size off of the download? But I doubt it would shrink the download size by much..

Just my two pence.

Who cares, its just yet another useless apple quirk. Im interested in software that I can use, not software that plays amusing little videos once per install.

I bet IT departments are overjoyed.

I really liked the video and will be very disappointed if they don't include it in the final release. It makes it seem as though the SECOND you turn the Mac on, it already starts dancing and doing amazing things straight out of the box with the push of a button.

What a shame. I always thought it was a nice touch.

It reminds me of the time I opened my first Mac. It made every new Mac after that, as well as every software re-install, just that little bit "magical" :D

I think it will be there

Just my 2 cents but:

This makes me wonder if they are only going to include the welcome video on new Macs, if it has Snow Leopard installed and you are upgrading to Leopard you hardly need a new welcome screen perhaps Macs that ship with Lion will still have the Welcome Screen. That video annoyed me whenever i reinstalled OSX, however from what I've heard from friends and family buying Macs they really liked the video, it made them feel more "Welcome".

I think next OS, OS11 (OSXI) will have name taken from constellations. Have you noticed that every desktop wallpaper for every new OSX shows this type of picture? Why that fall into the same pattern with no reason?
Just simple thought.

Hasn't anyone figured out that it is to reduce the file size, being as it is download only?
